Basically I think if you get a lot of people telling you wrestling is fake you're bringing it up in stupid contexts and that's their way of saying "I don't care now shut up." If it's topical, people who don't understand wrestling generally aren't going to get on your case for it. I don't know maybe you guys just know dumber/more dickish people than I do or maybe I'm better at presenting wrestling in a way that steers it away from "it's fake, right" but yeah I'm just saying that hasn't been my experience with talking about wrestling at all.

I mean, granted, it doesn't happen often, because I don't generally talk about things I know people aren't terribly interested in with them... but I've talked to at least a dozen people who don't follow it at some point or another (for various reasons not usually started by me) and yeah I haven't really gotten that reaction since like 6th grade.

The two years that I had roommates in college, they wouldn't stop making sarcastic comments about the show when I would watch wrestling, or else they would try to watch it with me but they were only able to engage on an ironic level.

And this was pre-hipsters!

So basically from fall '01 through spring '03 I had my grandparents record everything for me and I'd just marathon WWE every weekend at home. <_<

You may care, but Vince McMahon could give two f***s how he treats the prep guy compared to how he treats David Letterman, which is my point. They don't care about that story. He could do that a hundred times and that will not affect their decision to make him a media guy or not.

It's not so much that Vince cares about the media guy, it's that if Punk putting down media guys affects his likability among the fanbase in general, Vince WILL care about that. I'm not saying it'll cause him to be relegated to NXT or anything, but it might make the difference between main-eventing with the A belt and being an occasional challenger for the B belt.

Basically I think if you get a lot of people telling you wrestling is fake you're bringing it up in stupid contexts

I don't bring up wrestling to people who I don't know to follow it. I only discuss it at all if it comes up for some reason.

An example: one time my friends stumbled across a WWE show on TV and had a nostalgia trip where they remembered how they used to watch it when they were kids, talking about The Rock and whatever, and then commentating that they had no idea who that was on the screen (CM Punk). I mentioned that he was called CM Punk, and they asked if he was any good (referring, in retrospect, to whether he was charismatic and entertaining). I mentioned he was one of those rare guys who was a really good speaker and good in the ring. They were like "You know it's fake in the ring, right?" And I had to explain how wrestling, whether legitimate competition or not, is not something you can just step into a ring and do, in an attempt to assure them that I did not actually think I was watching a sporting event. I mean it made sense to them once I explained it a little, but they had never once thought about the idea, because they (like most people) hear "wrestling is fake" without an explanation of how it's fake, and they assume that there is some way that none of what they're seeing is "real."

Man what? Your friends used to watch wrestling and still didn't get what it means for someone to be "good in the ring?"

I don't care if it's normal or not to say wrestling is fake on reflex or not they are idiots if they used to watch and they don't know. I even felt as a kid that some guys were just more fun to watch wrestle than others. I mean watch Skinner or watch Bret Hart-- you don't even have to be a smark or whatever to say that Bret Hart's matches are just going to be more fun to watch.

No offense to you of course <_<

Yeah, I guess it is kind of weird that even having watched guys like the Hardyz compared to guys like... uh, the Big Show, that they wouldn't get the concept of being good in the ring. I really think when some people find out wrestling is "fake," without any context to what that means, they really just do decide to disregard anything that ever happened in a ring.

I'm sort of starting to understand why some people insist on correcting people who say it's fake by saying "No, it's scripted."

Just for the record while I'll concede the fakeness thing among the uninitiated I really don't think that that's typical of former wrestling fans. Like I know a lot of people who used to watch and don't anymore and I don't think I've ever heard of something like that. Everyone had wrestlers they thought were good or matches they thought were good, even if they don't like it anymore. I mean even on this board, you hear people saying similar things despite not having watched for years.

Yeah, I never thought it was weird before because it's an answer I've got it from the uninitiated, but when you put it that way it does seem sort of strange in retrospect.

I mean I know my father, who used to watch wrestling in the Hogan/Savage-era, and who doesn't care for it at all now, only evaluated wrestlers on how crazy their mannerisms were (he fondly remembers one guy who would chew the ring posts who's name I can't remember). And maybe partially how big they were. He wouldn't know what to say if you asked who his favorite in-ring performer was (probably, "well it's all fake anyway," knowing him). I'm not sure if that has to do with the era he watched, or if it's just because he's an idiot.

I want to guess that part of it might be that they feel like they were fooled, and they don't want to admit to themselves that they thought any wrestler seemed especially exciting to them because, in their mind, it means they bought into the illusion. Even though being exciting in the ring is not part of the illusion, and is an actual skill.

I'm just taking 2 AM stabs at what the reason might be, though. Because like you said, I'm sure when they were still watching there were definitely guys they found more exciting in the ring than others.

Well I intentionally picked a jobber more than a guy I knew was terrible because I was trying present it from the viewpoint of a casual viewer. I actually don't remember Skinner being great or terrible-- but I think I've seen one match of his since I was older than like 10

But "man this Skinner guy always loses he sucks Bret Hart is way better" is totally a valid thing for a casual wrestling fan to say regardless of their technical ring work and it's not weird. Like I could see former wrestling fans thinking The Great Khali was a good wrestler-- whether he technically is or whatever is beside the point. Point is thinking a guy is good in the ring is like... not even some smark specific thing.
