Basically I think if you get a lot of people telling you wrestling is fake you're bringing it up in stupid contexts

I don't bring up wrestling to people who I don't know to follow it. I only discuss it at all if it comes up for some reason.

An example: one time my friends stumbled across a WWE show on TV and had a nostalgia trip where they remembered how they used to watch it when they were kids, talking about The Rock and whatever, and then commentating that they had no idea who that was on the screen (CM Punk). I mentioned that he was called CM Punk, and they asked if he was any good (referring, in retrospect, to whether he was charismatic and entertaining). I mentioned he was one of those rare guys who was a really good speaker and good in the ring. They were like "You know it's fake in the ring, right?" And I had to explain how wrestling, whether legitimate competition or not, is not something you can just step into a ring and do, in an attempt to assure them that I did not actually think I was watching a sporting event. I mean it made sense to them once I explained it a little, but they had never once thought about the idea, because they (like most people) hear "wrestling is fake" without an explanation of how it's fake, and they assume that there is some way that none of what they're seeing is "real."
