Austin basically held the title from WM17 to the end of 2001 apart from that 2-week period where Angle won it and Austin won it back.

I don't know exactly how long that reign was though

As a corollary (not as confident on this but still my current guess), the briefcase is going to turn him heel if he does not cash it in at Summerslam.

John Cena will never turn heel. He (the person) loves doing things like the Make-a-Wish crap far too much for him (the character) to do anything that would crush the kiddies.

That sentence looks way too harsh. I applaud him as a person for doing all those Make-a-Wishes. It is certainly something special to make that much of a difference in those kids lives when that have so much working against them. He is definitely an A++ person.

That being said, it does make him a very stale character for pretty much everyone who doesn't fall into the Make-a-Wish age bracket.

Somebody (Jak probably) predicted this last night and I'm 100% OK with it. I feel like "nobody has ever lost the cashin" is kind of a monkey on WWE's back, and it makes you look kind of weak if you lose it. That said, it looks significantly better if somebody's already done it, and if anybody's going to be the first it should be somebody who won't really take too much of a hit from missing their chance - Cena is perfect for that. It's completely in-character for him to do an RVD-style cashin as well.

I disagree, btw, FFD. I think Cena wants to turn heel and will as soon as WWE are happy with Sheamus and Punk taking over.

Although I'm partial to the idea that he comes out and cuts a promo along the lines of:

Cena turning heel will be the major event of this decade and Cena knows it. However it's one of those things that you need the entire build planned out (the prelude, the turn, and about a year's worth of storylines leading up to a face finally ending Cena's reign of terror). I believe Cena is smart enough to know if WWE is ready to pull the trigger on it.

With that said, I won't be shocked if he announces in advance that he's cashing in at Summerslam. However, if that briefcase is still in his possession when that show ends, it tells me that they have something hot planned (which doesn't mean they'll execute, but like I said I'm not as sure about that prediction).

I'm positive he will not successfully cash in to win the title though. Even if he doesn't turn there's a lot more places to take Cena with a loss.

This, actually, is why the nWo angle had problems for a short time. And why post-Sting's reign things got REALLY stagnant. There was no one credible that fans actually wanted to win left.

Personally, I'm glad they're likely gonna put the MITB on a guy who doesn't "need it"

The MITB has a lot of potential as a storyline tool, but as a "we need to elevate this guy" tool it's kinda played out and has really just made the writers lazy. So yeah I dunno why some people are complaining about the Raw MITB as a concept-- definitely better than the alternative at this point (especially when we have SD's MITB to serve the "elevate midcarder" purpose)

Well, most of these kids will go through puberty and grow out of idolizing Cena in that way, but in the meantime they arent wishing for things their parents are uncomfortable with.

Some of the best rumble winner storylines have gone to people who didnt NEED it.

Yeah I'd rather not have 2. So if we're going to have 2, and with the brand split as good as done at this point, let's at least do something new with one of them.

The real problem for me is the competitors in it. 4-man with Big Show, Kane and Cena? I want some athletic guys in this thing. Not saying those 4 wouldn't do a good job but, y'know, where are my high spots. Maybe we'll get Rey or someone to liven it up. I'm not sure if Vickie was just announcing the FIRST 4 competitors or ALL 4 competitors.

Also eddv you're right, it will be Sheamus before it's Punk. The face of the company needs to do media and stuff and I think Sheamus is more interested in that whereas Punk prefers just being a wrestler. Plus he has more HHH backing. That said, Punk was on Fallon the other night which was kind of surprising, so maybe Punk is embracing what he needs to be to be the top guy.

The MitB match started with 6 so I could live with 6 apiece but to just have 4 each is kinda lame. At that point just combine them and do 1.
