A lot of JRPGs have battle music that trumps boss music, usually because some RPGs have boss music that's even better than the generic boss music (SMRPG and Chrono Trigger, for example).

Gotta put up M&L:SSS. Dunno about the other M&L games, I don't remember their music as much. Tales of Symphonia, the Abyss, and Vesperia are all good candidates too.

gotta agree with Chrono Trigger as well, Boss Battle 2 does not play as often as you think, and BB1 is not as good as the regular battle music

speaking of, does anyone else think that they shouldn't have used BB2 on the Masamune fight? Seems like it doesn't fit with the context and severity of the battle compared to the other times it plays.

the absolute winner of this category is Phantasy Star 4.
Persona 4 also qualifies, but not nearly as big a gap as PS4 has.

also should i assume this is referring to the general boss battle theme *only*? and not to special themes for some bosses? 'cause that'd open the door for quite a few more, though half of that would be because there isn't really a 'boss theme' but goes for each character. though so many said in here are so, so wrong.

alright, then yeah lufia 2 might be able to work for this. it's close. sinistral boss theme is a whole other story, but the boss theme and the regular battle theme are pretty close to each other that i can see this.

half of sakuraba's work probably fits this, though it might be extremely splintered like the way i think symphonia is. baten kaitos probably does count, though it's close with the standard boss theme (not so much for chaotic dance though - that thing sucks). two tracks for comparison:

boss starts better, but i think regular progresses better to give it the nod.

tales of phantasia counts. its boss theme sucks. neither's really good, but the regular fight theme doesn't suck at least. you'll damn near never hear it loop in the game, but it's pretty clear on its own i think.

star ocean 1 might count. but both are bad. >_>; don't remember 2 well enough. SO3... is splintered a lot too, though the main battle theme is better than most in that.

the counterexample to this is probably Team JDK, the guys who do the Falcom soundtracks. Ys and Legend of Heroes mainly. those guys know how to make boss themes. case and point?

however the regular battle theme definitely has a case for being better. and the sinistral boss theme flat out is better than either of 'em.

DS reimaging on the other hand.... well, here.

Don't get the hate for CT's first boss theme either, I think it's great. Basically no song in CT isn't great, though.

Don't agree with Skies of Arcadia, I really dig the boss theme. I am kind of a sucker for really low, menacing piano riffs and songs that change based on the status of the fight, though.

I find CT's normal battle theme to be kind of unremarkable really. I don't get tired of it by the end of the game, which is good - that is really the most I can ask for out of an RPG's battle theme. There aren't a lot of RPGs that actually pull this off, which is probably why the boss themes all usually sound so much better to me.

Huh, no I mean I really like songs that have several different modes that change contextually based on what's happening in the fight. SoA's boss battle does this - it has a normal mode, then a part that plays when someone is dead and then a triumphant part that plays when the boss is at critical health. I love video game songs that do this, so SoA's boss theme stands out more in my head.

...actually for some reason yeah. legend of heroes: trails in the sky has a better regular battle theme than the boss one, which is an unusual thing outta falcom, but hey.

ah, now i remember. always jammed to the end of it. didn't notice it at first but after a while i realized the soundtrack was changing, which was pretty damn cool. still, as standalone pieces, without the game literally picking what it wants to play from the song, regular theme totally outclasses it.
