What really makes Akinator an evil genius is that, even if he figures it out early, he won't guess. He'll keep asking questions that you have to say Yes to, just so he can rub it in that he knows.

he guessed Cortez from Timesplitters but he had to ask if the character was from Halo, Gears of War, and Dead Space first

Akinator is a simple decision tree.

It doesn't actually know what it's asking. It's just narrowing down the set of all the things in its index to smaller and smaller sets, until the 20th question where it guesses the thing that most people who have followed your path have said.

I think it makes Akinator cooler, as well as helps to explain why it sometimes does stupid things. For instance, I'm willing to bet that Akinator hadn't asked whether Rainbow Dash was associated with blue before, so it effectively had one less question to guess about.

The most important thing about the Akinator is that it's a learning algorithm, so all these failures people mention will eventually go away.

I was always impressed by how extensive it was, even years ago when it was really new, and also how fast it works.

The Akinator actually doesn't use a decision tree -- if he used a tree then if you answered one question wrong he wouldn't be able to get the answer right. He uses a matrix where each question is weighted differently for different characters, and then at the end he picks the character that is most consistent with all of the answers given thus far. Based on how people have answered over time, he can adjust the weights to continually get more accurate.

He picks his questions by finding questions that split the set of characters he's considering most closely to 50/50. So when he asks things like "Is the character from Final Fantasy?" it's because that question narrows down the field of answers more than any other question. If there are that many FF characters in the database I feel like the question is fair.
