Actually. DO they count Douglas's infamous ECW reign as a world title reign? Do they count his ten seconds as NWA champ as a "world title reign?"

I don't think they do. They (like me) are not of the mindset that "once a title reaches World Title status, it will always be a World Title." They revoked the NWA's World Title status at some point, and they even revoked the WWWF Title's World Title status at some point during Backlund's reign too (but later restored it).

If they didn't consider any ECW Title reigns as World Title reigns prior to the advent of ECW on TNN, I doubt they would have considered any NWA Champion without national exposure as a World Champion. I don't know that for a fact though.

And just for the record, I'll re-iterate my personal stance on why I don't consider the ECW Title nor the ROH Title to be World Championships, even if I may casually refer to them as such for ease of conversation.

They are not destination companies for the most sought-after wrestlers in the world.

Given the opportunity to go to WCW or the WWF, no one chose to stay in ECW. Their talent constantly got raided by the two bigger companies, and yes sometimes people would come back, but only when neither of the bigger dogs wanted them. Conversely, talent routinely jumped between the WWF and WCW. They were equals as far as attracting the top talent of the '90s.

Same with ROH. As much as I love the company, no one chooses to be an ROH guy if either TNA or WWE wants them (WGTT might be the sole exception since I can't imagine TNA not wanting them, but even that is just speculation). Every time one of them is given the chance to jump to a bigger company, they take it. Some of the top talent in the world is in ROH, but it is not where they WANT to be if given complete control over their careers. Conversely, TNA and WWE trade talent back and forth. TNA might not be on the same level as WCW, but still some of the world's top talent chooses them over WWE. They actually have wrestlers that WWE wants but cannot get (and vice-versa, obviously). Therefore I can still justify calling their Championship a World Title.

The major Japanese heavyweight titles meet that "top talent" criteria, but not the "defended around the world" criteria that ROH and ECW actually did meet. Plus they don't even call their titles "World Titles" to my knowledge.

New Japan's titles are the "International Wrestling Grand Prix" titles, which is basically the same thing.
All Japan is a bit trickier. They have World Tag Team and Junior titles, but their Heavyweight titles is a unification of three other titles, one of which was a "World" title, another being "International," and the last being "National."

But anyway, you've got me wondering: what's your opinion on women's titles? I mean I guess the easy answer is "There are no women's world titles," but let's say we had to pick some. Obviously the WWE Divas and TNA Knockouts are the big names, but they're both treated like lower-midcarders. SHIMMER is probably the next biggest thing in the country, and obviously their title is a Main Event title since they're an all female promotion, but at the same time I think most women leave SHIMMER when they get an offer to either of the two big names. So which would be the World Championship(s)?

Actually TNA's women's title randomly gets main event slots sometimes. I think they treat the title somewhat respectably-- it may be the second most prestigious title in the organization right now thinking about it. That speaks more to how mishandled the others are but whatever. (and over the lifetime the X-Division at the very least beats it out)

I wouldn't call any of them "world" titles but TNA is the closest thing to one-- though not far enough ahead that the Divas title can realistically be discarded if you give the TNA title cred-- mostly think about Jakyl's idea of women willingly jumping between the two.

Shimmer would be but just doesn't have the exposure.

There can certainly be Women's World Titles, but they're separate from Men's World Titles, for obvious reasons.

IMO the Knockout's Championship actually IS the most prestigious Women's Title in the world right now. The Divas title is actually newer than the Knockouts Title, and you get more top women wrestlers jumping from WWE to TNA than the other way around.

ROH is interesting to me. Eddie when he was dropped off went there, but he wasn't the only one. Jeff Hardy went - and got boo'd quite a bit - but the greatest success relative to his wwe status was Jamie Noble/James Gibson. in WWE he never was anything impressive. didn't seem to ever really matter, or didn't even look to be that good.

then he went to ROH and all of a sudden we realized that he was actually really, really good in the ring, but he never got to show it in WWE. huge shame too. it's hard to think of it, but Jamie Noble, in ROH, was more successful than Jeff Hardy. even when both started doing indie work that wouldn't make sense by their WWE status, let alone now.

they don't trade talent but i'm not sure i'd use those terms either. TNA became a middle ground for ROH and WWE. some ROH guys go up then come back down, some with decent amounts of success. right now Aries is the one with the best chance to stay there for a while. WWE guys don't willingly go to TNA unless it's personal (Angle, Christian) or the money's good enough (Nash, Flair, Sting) but any TNA guy will jump at the chance to join WWE, except Angle. it's basically a one-way swap - former WWE guys - that do it. the ones who do the jump from TNA to WWE are very, very far and few in between. like the closest i can think of is "Vance Archer," and fat lotta good that did. does Truth count? honestly not sure. if he does then it would indeed be the most successful one... after spending a good what, 7 years in WWE now? wouldn't be surprised if he has been longer with WWE than he was in TNA. again, not a swap, but he stepped up instead. however he's really a rare instance of that. for the most part though, it's no more a 'swap of talent' than your brother lending you a shirt then getting it back a year later.

like i can understand TNA counting as a world title, but that's all due to the people they have in their upper card consistently. almost all are former WWE guys, which is one of the bigger complaints within TNA. and it ain't even like they keep their position when they return to WWE. but TNA, as a company, certainly isn't respected even amongst itself. the title has had its ups and downs, and talent has openly expressed preference of not just WWE but also ROH. and some guys who left TNA don't look like they would go back (mostly Lethal and Young Bucks). it's the one outlier here who tells the real reason why ROH isn't a world title: Daniels. he loves ROH as a company and its fanbase, legit. but he picks TNA when offered enough. why? business. and that's how you know who's a world title, by seeing who has the money.

WWE does. TNA does. ROH doesn't. if they did, they'd easily be one too, they're certainly much more respected than anything but WWE.

and yeah, when it comes to women's titles that one makes me go TNA or WWE only. SHIMMER exists and should be really, but if any got a shot with WWE or TNA they'd jump on it due to again, budget, not a lack of respect. it's easily more respected than the other two combined.

that respect though is why i think, right now, TNA wins out. for all the crap they've done with their belts they aren't the ones who had Kelly Kelly as champ or completely wasted Gail. this has been changing, slowly mind you, and occasionally there are times when the diva's belt actually seems like it's bigger.

and then Natie jobs to Alicia Fox in 2 minutes and you wonder why you ever thought that. still, WWE has a solid roster on females between beth, nattie, kong, hell AJ and Naomi if she's still around. layla will be back sooner than later too, and eve is actually surprisingly getting much better to the point where i'd even say she's above average. i think i'm missing somebody, but yeah.

basically goes "WWE should be 2, but SHIMMER's too poor to take 1, and TNA's got better booking with women."

I could direct you to a few matches during his Cruiserweight Title run if you'd like. <_<

He was part of that crazy Yung Dragons vs. Three Count feud in WCW and all of those guys got noticed, and then when he got to WWE he really did stand out as something special and a freaking AMAZING wrestler during his first WWE run.

Once he came back though he was pure lowcard comedy, yeah, except for that Noble/Palumbo/McCool angle which was actually one of WWE's better love triangles.

I like Kelly Kelly, honestly. I mean she's got nothing going for her in the ring, but I occasionally feel the urge to root for someone who doesn't deserve their success, and I respect any woman willing to get naked as much as she does to get places in the world!

Eve actually has some talent, though. Wouldn't call her good yet, but she's at least not bad now.

Also I meant to post this earlier, but the other girl with Funk-assaurus Clay on Monday night was the girl who's favorite match is Melina vs Alicia Fox. So yeah, speaking of people who don't deserve their success.

From the sounds of what I've read about her, she's a nice enough girl who really likes wrestling, and wants to be a part of it even if it means performing strip shows on national TV or sleeping with everyone backstage. You can't fault her for being booked as champion. That's as bad as MWC blaming John Cena personally for how he's booked!

I agree, Punk does need to cut at least short promos once a night, the reason his feud with ace feels so hollow is that it is. its being treated like a midcard angle(Poor Ziggler) so Punk isn't being given the time to really make this angle what it could be. Let alone Ace and the Ziggler/Vickie side of things. Does Ace support Dolph? Does Dolph suck up to ace? Does Vickie? What does Dolph think of Ace's role in his series of matches? What does Punk think? Is Dolph for real, or is Ace screwing him? Does he respect the threat that is Dolph Ziggler or is he taking him lightly? Is this feud about Punk vs Dolph or Punk vs. Ace with Ziggler as his proxy? Again where do Vickie and Swagger fit here?

All questions unanswered, all questions that COULD be answered if they gave this angle more screentime and let any of them on the mic. Did we need 4 Kane being creepy segments and that 10 minute tirade to start the show more than any chance to develop this angle?

I mean raw this week was AWESOME, but I feel like an opportunity is being missed to make this Punk/Ace/Ziggler angle great and memorable.

Oh wait, I guess Eddie was shorter, according to Wikipedia.

I thought he was billed as being 5'11" but I was wrong.

This reminds me of that Raw where Seth Green was standing up to Randy Orton, and Green looked like goddamn Little Mac fighting Bald Bull

I dunno if silencing the voice of the voiceless is a deliberate attempt to undercut his popularity or not, but his character doesn't work as just some awesome wrestler. He needs to SPEAK. OFTEN.

I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and say that he didn't cut a promo last Raw because they were up against a Bowl game and were expecting low ratings, which is why they didn't waste anything big on that week, but I guess we'll see for sure this week.

You know, I never considered this before, but I wonder if the reason they paired them together was to make Bryan look bigger than he really is. <_<

That's... actually brilliant. I hadn't thought about that but she is short as can be, and AmDrag looks like a damn giant next to her.

Hey, today is the 19th anniversary of the debut episode of Monday Night Raw.

Later this year we get episode 1000 and one year from now we get the 20th Anniversary episode. Should be fun!

Yes, "fun"

Have anniversary and milestone shows ever not been just relentless "look how amazing we are, here's some video packages and some old stars talking for a while instead of doing any of the fun things we say our show is about"?

Literally every match and segment had someone more over, and more talented than John Cena.

Have we really come that far?

To be fair, Seth Green is short.
