Wrestling teams have practices where they wrestle each other. I highly doubt both his own team and opposing teams would let that charade continue.

I get that. Maybe I just have a strange sense of humor. What's even funnier is that the experiment was useless to begin with since the Beetle they used detected that it was on a treadmill and activated the "cheat" system for emissions tests.

I have nothing against monkey research, or even this particular study's methodology, really. I think we're all misunderstanding each other. I just found it slightly humorous that Volkswagen thought it would be good PR to gas monkeys using diesel vehicles to prove they're safe, given the history of using diesel trucks as mobile gas vans.

The article states that the findings for this study were inconclusive, which is likely why they didn't actually use it for PR. I don't think there's a link to the study.

Besides, this wasn't done as a "what happens so we can learn" experiment, it was done as backing evidence for a "let's show that diesel is safe" PR campaign that was ultimately never released.

Not all dealerships are out to rip you off - I happen to work for what I consider to be a very honest one, and I love it. On the flip side, not all independent shops have your best interests at heart. It's good that you got a second opinion.

Sounds like ICE next wants to pad their numbers to justify their existence. Since Trump has basically given them carte blanche to deport whoever they like, why wouldn't they get their jollies by going after everyone? I don't know nearly enough about Hyundais to say one way or the other. If the timing cover is only damaged cosmetically you can probably skip that, though I'd still consider the timing belt. 15k is a little over a year of driving for a lot of people, so you can either put it off or get it knocked out now.

I can't answer that without knowing the year, make, model and mileage of your vehicle.

That's what I was thinking. Not sure why it costs $300 though, since everything is already off...

The timing belt is a toothed belt that synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft with the camshaft(s). Unlike an accessory or serpentine belt, it has to be precisely lined up with the teeth of the various sprockets or else the engine won't run properly. It's a delicate process.

You may also want to ask about your water pump. It depends heavily on the engine, but a lot of times they're buried down in there behind the timing cover so it may be a worse idea to just get it replaced for peace of mind.
