Yeah a little out there in some parts, but the acting was fantastic as was the storytelling.

Yes I am also willing to forgive that Batman killed people which is literally a cardinal sin when it comes to Batman.

They're the most "Batman" of all the Batman movies to me, if that makes sense.

When I think live action Batman, I think of those movies. Danny Elfman's theme is also THE theme for Batman.

penquin was way off in Returns. he didn't actually fit the character from the comics. in the comics he is a highly civilized man. in the movie he's this monster that doesn't even know to live in the human world. the problem is that Jack Nicholson told Danny Devito that he had a lot of fun being the Joker and to do the same thing as him. even though it didn't make sense for Penquin. neither Jack nor Danny care about or ever have read the comics. so they were ignorant and also didn't give a fuck. and thus, Penquin in Batman Returns was a travesty. he's on the same level as Bane in Dark Knight Rises in terms of how off the character is from the source material

Devito is still the goat Penguin.

Like it was the perfect mix of innocent orphan raised in the urban wild, someone trying to be high class like they would have been, and creepy villain.

Edit: like mentioned above, I like the idea of Penguin *attempting* to be high class but ultimately falling victim to his true character. Comics be damned.

Tim's Batman movies are what I think Batman movies should be.

Cartoony, gritty, dark, and Gothic.

I like Nolan's Batman movies, but he tried to make Batman into a Law and Order film.

Although, I think the Arkham games nailed the Batman universe and characters, but sadly they're not movies.

basicallly I want movies like the games. a combination of the best parts of the old movies and the nolan films. I like the grittyness that Nolan attempts but I hate the realism approach. it's a damn comic story. I want Ra's to be immortal. I want Bane to use chemicals to be inhumanly strong. I want to see the rest of the Bat Family. and the other more fantastic villains like Clayface and Killer Croc.

The surreal atmosphere fits Batman like a glove and it's the only time Batman has been presented (that I've seen) as a realistically depressed individual instead of someone being angsty because it's trendy.

I also like that he doesn't come across as perfect. He does some insane shit, but they poke fun of it rather than treating it like an extension of how awesome he is.

I have no problem with the killings. Batman has killed in most every adaptation -- including several in which he's openly stated that he has rules against it. It's just a studio ploy to allow repeat villains.

That said, killing the strongman in Returns was a little unnecessary. It's clear he did that just because he could. And while it did get a laugh out of me, it is a bit out of place for a somewhat noble hero to straight up kill a guy in cold blood just to get one up on him.

Actually, now that I think about it, they could've left the strongman scene in and relocated it to later in the film.

Had the strongman be one of the people attempting to abduct and kill the firstborn sons of Gotham, Batman killing him on the spot would've been pretty justified.

I never got the appeal of realistic superhero movies like Batman Begins. The fantasy aspect is the primary appeal of superheroes. Indiana Jones can't fight an alligator man in the sewers, but Batman can. John McClane can't stop a meteor from hitting New York. That looks like a job for Superman.

There's also the renaissance man appeal, but I never got into that. The way I see it, superiority is a profane concept.

The Tim Burton movies could've used a little more action, but they hit the right note of being fantastic in the presentation department and a little Earthbound in what the hero was capable of. Modern superheroes generally invert that and there just isn't much of an appeal there for me.

The problem with the second film was... don't kill me... Christopher Walken.

That was a role for a minor character and an actor who could blend into the background. He should've been like Daggett from The Dark Knight Rises; someone who doesn't call too much attention to himself and doesn't overstay his welcome.

Instead, you had this fantastic personality playing a minor part and that led to a lot of babysitting in an already crowded film. They should've gotten Walken under contract to play a villain in the third movie.

And, yeah, I know the character was originally supposed to be Harvey Dent. That wouldn't have worked either. They should've had him played by some random middle aged guy who could be an asshole for two scenes and then cut his screen time in half.

Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne performance amounts to a grown adult playing an addled teenager. And, yeah, I've read the argument time and again that he's developmentally delayed due to the tragedy involving his parents. The reality is that they just wrote him like a teen so that teenage audience members would identify with his angst.

I loved Nolan's movies at the time, but now I don't have any desire to rewatch them unlike Burton's. The Nolan Batman's serious take almost seems kinda silly at this point and they feel like generic action movies from that time.

Batman could have been Vigilante Man and nothing much could have changed. Burton's Batman movies, while weird, feel like Batman movies. Returns can be a bit much, but the first one has the best mix of seriousness and comic book goofiness and I prefer goofy clown Jack Nicholson Joker over Ledger. Also the blend of the contemporary 80's style and the film noir 30's/40's style is awesome.

I don't see him on the film's poster. I see the bat, the cat, and the penguin. He's the bad guy who sets things in motion, but much of the time he's playing a bizarre inversion of a damsel in distress.

They padded out his role because he was Christopher Walken or because he was originally Harvey Dent and they were setting him up as Two-Face in the next film. Either way, two adversaries were enough. Shreck should've been a minor character.

Like I said, Walken could've played a bad guy in the third film.

While I'm at it, Michelle Pfieffer's Catwoman is the GOAT when it comes to that character. People give Burton's vision of some characters shit, but Penguin being some sewer freak that they attempt to normalize in society and Catwoman being completely unhinged was cash.
