Here's the thing:

1. At some point, in the future, this will be needed. Either a section of another branch (like the marines are technically a section of the navy), or its own branch.
2. The military works best with a system in place that they can work off of.

So It's good to have it written in stone now rather than later.

This is one of the few things Trump has been trying to push through that I agree with and support. Air superiority wins wars, and it follows that as technology advances, space superiority will become more and more crucial to maintaining the upper hand in international conflict. I'm 100% in support of this, just hope they build the branch intelligently and don't just throw money into the program with no real plan.

Yeah, to me it was always "this is something that's going to be needed at some point or another" to me.

Make sure you get the proper safety glasses before messing with high powered lasers. They *will* wreck your eyes before you know what went wrong if you catch a beam or reflection the wrong way. These things you're looking at are not cat toys or presentation pointers.

I will be treating it like I would a firearm. Batteries stored in a separate container, never pointed at a person, not pointing at anything reflective, and wearing the correct eye protection at all times.

I've wondered about mounting one on a rifle before. Wonder how long of a range you can get use of one. I know they can be suped up beyond levels that you can buy them. I believe they're still legal as well. I'll second the recommendation to get proper goggles though.

So, from my un-researched ideas, it's legal to get it.
In terms of use for scoping a rifle, you need to remember that lasers aren't perfect cylinders, they do spread over time, and you do have a focus point associated with it. But, it depends on if you just want to see a dot over in some other place or not, or if you want to see a beam.

I'm looking at getting a 100mW at somewhere around 500nm to 400nm, ideally it will be a kit as well so I can spend a good few days setting it up and having fun. I'm just curious if anyone has any experience handling actually dangerous lasers and any sort of recommendations for saftey or websites.
Everything I find online makes this all look super shady.

I'm going to more or less treat it like a gun in terms of storage and using, and get some quality saftey gear for me and my gf.

Sadly, there isn't that... many products for that. You can get her a book on CSS, but that might not be timeless and they're better off honestly looking that up online.

Something to note about me personally, and it may or may not apply to your niece:
I prefer to learn through projects, and problem solving that way. So I want to do something, and I do research on how other people do it, how it applies to what I'm doing, and then fitting it together.

Kits are useful in that it hands you everything in one go, and gives you some starting information on setting it up, and then tells you broad ideas that may or may not interest.

I agree with the others on an Aurdino board kit, you have to use C++ to code it, there's a physical component of LEDs blinking, or motors moving as well to help reinforce the idea of applications of coding.
It's completely reusable because it's just wires and resistors.

One point that I did hear that I sympathize with, is the channels that remake dolls.
From the outside, it sounds like it's child-focused, from dolls, the videos themselves being really calm, and all of their tags are pretty child-focused-sounding.
But then they use really harsh chemicals, power tools, and razor blades to completely take down the dolls, and rebuild them.
My gf watches those videos occasionally, and it could actually just take those down entirely.

Discord's privacy elements are complete fucking garbage.
It's IRC "upsides" are that they added emoji's and custom emoji's.
The desktop straight up just uses chrome, so if it's opened too long, the entire system starts lagging from RAM consumption.
The built-in memes are pretty damn bad and they honestly take away from the experience.

It's not perfect by any means, but it's what I use for most of my stuff, because, hey, it's what other people use.
