Anybody who complains about why board game X is popular and not game Y are probably the same people who get off trying to min-max their characters in D&D and get pissed when the Chaotic Neutral NPC wins a battle with them because they rolled a nat 20 on the "Kick them in the balls and run" check. My brother, you should know more about DnD if you're going to make references. |

The only reason it would go bad is vermin getting inside and ruining things. If you're looking for food at the end of the world to survive for decades, yeah that's not great. But a 20lbs or 50lbs isn't going to go bad if you're eating rice 2-3 times a week. |

shadowsword87 04/12/23 10:20:05 AM #25 | People are flopping between "this isn't anything, it's just parroting other people" and "this is an incredibly useful tool" on the technology side. I've honestly enjoyed using it, and I've found ChatGPT more useful for putting points together than anyone else around. As an example, I bought an uncut die (the thinky bits of a computer) and was looking at it under the microscope, and found some weird formations. I don't know anyone who is in the silicon wafer design, and wouldn't even know where to start looking around. ChatGPT helped me point to some different terms and also handling the die. It's as good as what's fed to it, so as good as the internet is. |

Same with me, but I live in an apartment complex. |

It's not fully automated, but it's definitely true that there are fewer manufacturing jobs available in the US than there used to be, with no commensurate reduction in domestic manufacturing output. Many, many factory jobs have been lost to the combination of automation and outsourcing. That's also true. I just get a bit of a weird reaction to "oh no all the factory jobs are gone" when it's provably not true. chelsea___wtf posted... this is the most overhyped productivity tool in the history of software engineering. it helps you write boilerplate quicker. It doesn't architect systems. So far, yeah. We don't know how far this will go, there's now a whole fuckton of money being poured into this by every major tech company. The software side of this is going to blow up hard. I've even seen silicon manufacturing companies produce specific chips for matrix multiplication, and thus AI. |

shadowsword87 03/30/23 8:55:04 PM #17 | ParanoidObsessive posted... Factory workers were getting their jobs replaced by robots decades ago, and everyone just told them to suck it up and go retrain their skills (as if that's a simple thing). adjl posted... Factory workers were automated into obsolescence because designing a machine to do repetitive mechanical tasks is pretty easy I don't know if you all have stepped into a factory recently, but, factory work is very much not fully automated. It costs millions to create that machine for a line that's going to be around maybe 4 years at most. It's also not a "fire and forget" machine that marketers claim it to be. It still takes even more specialized automation teams to maintain those machines. Mundane factory work is still alive and well because those workers are cheaper than automation. That's my professional opinion, because I'm an engineer at an automotive supplier who has only a slight amount of automation (and shakes my fist at operators fucking up perfectly fine parts). AI will be different. It takes a team of, say, 10, to automate a department of 50 (and then budget cuts come in). Anyone who spends their day in front of the computer 95% of the time, is likely to be automated, or extremely reduced departments once corporate realizes programmers can just ask a computer to do the code. I'll also happily, any, any, any day of the week take AI HR over any single HR person I've dealt with. |

shadowsword87 03/26/23 8:34:25 AM #45 | VideoboysaysCube posted... This is where I have my doubts. Just consider current chess AI. They're capable of identifying certain lines that no human could ever come up with, and that's because of their raw computational power. Think of how many hours a person has to invest to become an expert in something. A computer can completely eliminate that time component. I'm talking beyond writing here, but say we were trying to create a new kind of technology. Scientists would ordinarily have to resort to trial and error. But if an AI had a full understanding of physics (at least within the scope of what we understand) it could process millions of variations in just a brief moment. Oh you see it with mathematics right now, especially higher dimension systems where people suck at understanding examples. An AI can show links to potential mathematical models, and then the mathematician goes and checks more rigorously. Just like a "computer" was a job for someone who computes equations, and that went away to the calculator. |

It can create full character sheets for random NPCs/enemies in your setting, it can semi-randomize plot points by dangling a bunch of threads for you to further pursue, etc. It shouldn't ever be used unassisted, but it looked like an absolutely fantastic supplementary tool. When things go commercial is of course where the line gets drawn. Oh absolutely, I expect this to be used and abused to hell and back. But just asking it for some interesting ships, and the corporations that made it, to fill out a shipyard. Yeah it's great. I can whip up an interesting NPC with just a few seconds of typing, and have them fit the exact scene I need, and make up details quickly. The GM dread of the players talking to an NPC you haven't fully prepared yet, are a thing of the past! |
