Confidence in the American Dream has been withering for some time now. I doubt this one speech will have any impact on that trend one way or the other.
Yeah yeah, but it's an indication of the overall message of the past few administrations, and it builds up over time to do real damage.
It's been happening since the 70's, and the causes are bigger than just our government. See this speech by Jimmy Carter:
Well worth reading in its entirety. We (maybe) had a brief recovery in 80's under Reagan, but we've been slowly circling the drain ever since.

That's what is disappointing about the speech. There is not much a speech can do, really. It's not legally binding, it doesn't change policy, or anything. But it DOES influence beliefs and influences the confidence in concepts like the American Dream, so there really is no reason to damage that confidence unless you deliberately intended to do so.

That's not even that bad of a quote. The worst is how he was using the Internet as an example of government making something useful, when privatization is what turned it from a fancy mail system between colleges to the most versatile and important tool in all of history. The Internet is the ultimate expression of the free market, and proves that it can work globally without government involvement. Even amidst all this controversy surrounding the potential censorship of the Internet by governments, he uses this example.
I think his point is that the the backbone of the internet was literally invented by the government. They provided the canvas that all those private interests who came later painted upon.

I'll admit I'm a bit surprised to see you link it, though, as it mostly reads like an argument for some level of socialised medicine (although, granted, socialised medicine that comes at a lower cost than the current US system, which even a staunch libertarian might see as an improvement). But maybe you have a different take? I'm curious, if so.
The main reason I linked it was for the first part. The leftist media constantly tries to persuade the public that America under Republicans is some completely free and unregulated market, when nothing could be further from the truth. We're already a lot less free than many countries whom we view as "socialist" in comparison to us. Also, I just wanted to give Morgan some credit. He's not a liberty-movement guy by any stretch of the imagination, but he does an excellent job collecting the facts and presenting them in a clear way.
You have to admit, he makes a good argument for modeling ourselves after Canada/Europe!

Once again, please explain to me why they can't find any Asparagus pickers in Washington State, given that unemployment is so high. By your reasoning, all of the unemployed are FORCED to take those jobs. And yet, they are not doing so.
This is a bit of a tangent, but didn't you mention that they are still only offering minimum wage for this job? If it's impossible for them to fill the positions, shouldn't the logic of the free market dictate that they need to increase their offer?

Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article 21, section 1:
"Everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives."
There may be countries where this right is not expressed through voting, but I very much doubt that you are from one of those countries.
Convicted felons in the United States are not allowed to vote. I'm not sure if there's some fine print in the UDHR that allows this, but regardless that is how things work here.

It's more likely we die due to a stray asteroid than anything else. Not a whole lot people know this but we just barely dodge one last month. And NASA only caught eye of it 4 days before. It was 10 times the size of Tunguska, which is this thing that annihilated an entire rainforest and left a crater that formed a river over 40 years. Had it hit it would've wiped out an entire country.
That article isn't making that out to be a country killer.

We don't need a hyperdrive to reach the nearest systems. We could probably do it within a 100 years if we were able to maintain a 1960's Space Race level of focus on it the whole time.
I don't think you're fully aware of the distances involved here.
With today's space engines it would take ~80 000 years to reach the nearest star, Proxima centauri.
Using engines we've actually built before sure. But that's misleading because no one has attempted to actually build an interstellar ship yet. Theoretically, we already have the technology to build various nuclear designs that would be capable of accelerating a ship up to a substantial fraction of light speed. The main obstacle would be convincing humanity to sacrifice the enormous resources that would be required to build such a ship. Not to mention convincing them to allow huge quantities of nuclear fuel to be launched into space. But nonetheless these are obstacles that we could at least potentially overcome, unlike the prospect of waiting for hyperdrive which we are nowhere close to getting with current understanding.

We won't be going outside the solar system until we invent the hyperdrive.
And then nobody will volunteer to do it because everyone knows the hyperdrive always malfunctions at the worst possible moment.
I don't see it happening within 1000 years.

Now, as to "Well what are they going to do about it?" that gets a bit trickier. A President can only be impeached for "high crimes or misdemeanors," and I'm not sure mere "dereliction of duty" or whatever you want to call it would qualify as that. PERHAPS the fact that he took an oath to uphold the constitution and faithfully execute the office of President, that he would clearly be violating, could be construed as some form of perjury?
Dereliction of duty is a serious charge when brought against a mere grunt in the military. Why would it be any less serious when brought against the Commander in Chief?

I don't get how the budget was 70 million dollars.
A) Did they honestly think they could necessarily make that back? I mean, it could I suppose, but that's not the kind of budget you should be throwing around on a gimmick movie that has the potential to bomb.
B) Where did all that money go? The trailers I've seen make the movie look really cheap. Like a step above a Straight to DVD. Maybe it's just the lighting or something, but it looks far less professional than that budget implies.
$70 million is almost nothing these days if you're using any effects at all.

Someone who's skin is brown and speaks spanish is considered by most people to be hispanic, latino, or just mexican literally 100% of the time. The Black Panthers calling for Zimmerman's murder are preaching about how Florida should be set on fire with all white people burning. Naturally the government wants to take advantage of this and incite race wars to make people forget about the recession and 4 dollar gas, so "White Hispanic" was coined as a new term that almost never existed until this story broke.
