I was looking at a PC version which has the glitches patched, when I get around to playing it.
I would go with GBA, but apparently the sound on these ports really suffers. That's why I was playing a fan translation of FFV even though the GBA version has a good translation apparently.

There's a SNES ROMhack out there that has a lot of the bugs fixed without touching the translation or anything. That's the best version of the game IMO, the retranslation in the GBA release sucks and the GBA version has slowdown and crappy sound. It's not worth the bonus dungeons, especially if you've never played the original.

GBA.

The sound quality really doesn't suffer as long as you use headphones or simply don't play it on a GBA, and the pieces are strong enough to carry themselves regardless. It has by far the best translation of the lot (taking the good parts from the SNES one and combining it with a more accurate, less censored script), and is otherwise identical to the SNES version with some nice errors and all the bugs fixed.

Since my message got deleted, I'll try to reiterate without upsetting the mods. SNES is the best version despite the bugs (Evasion stat, vanish/doom) for a first time playthrough. If there was a version out there of the SNES game with no bugs, it would be the best version.

GBA port suffers from a bad re-translation that sounds like it was done by some amateurs, and only adds a couple of bonus dungeons at the expense of sound quality and massive in-game lag. If this is your first playthrough, stick to SNES. The PSX version is a direct port of the SNES, but has massive load times which are unbearable.

FFV is the one where the GBA sound quality is actually better, though.

SNES. The music is really important to this game. The translation is certainly not worse than the GBA, just different, and as a first time player you should barely even notice the bugs.

Virtually all line changes took things that were barely worth a chuckle at best and modified them into things that were barely worth a chuckle at best. There really isn't any major loss as far as the script is concerned. Most of the only genuinely good lines are still kicking. The only real loss was Shadow no longer willingly slitting his mama's throat for a nickel according to his intro.

FFVI's strongest point is the soundtrack, and it's completely butchered in the GBA version.

SNES version is the only way to go if you have your priorities straight.

It isn't completely butchered. It takes a hit, but it's worth it for the new content... and I even agree with you that that's FFVI's strongest point.

The new content is only something a veteran player would appreciate though, seeing as it's post-game content.

The GBA version is good for your second playthrough, but the first time you want to experience the main story the best possible way, and that sure isn't the GBA version with its much smaller screen, censorship, softened translation and bad music.

This. To a T. GBA version is fine, but it's not like FFVI has a particularly good plot; you play it for two reasons, the gameplay and the music. One of the best OSTs in gaming history, and the GBA version makes serious auditory compromises. Compare for yourself:

So basically, to summarize:

Music

SNES>GBA

Translation

SNES more liberal and catchy, GBA more literal and wordy

Graphics

SNES>GBA. GBA has smaller screen, washed-out colors and slowdown in battles

Stability

GBA>SNES. SNES has a lot of small glitches, nothing game-breaking though except in the first print version which you won't be playing.

Content

GBA>SNES, GBA has extra dungeons and summons but one scene is removed for stupid censorship reasons.

There's a fanmade patch for the GBA version that restores the SNES music. And one that combines the two translations to keep the best lines from the SNES version along with the accuracy and verbosity of the GBA version. Not sure if you can use the two together though.

Of course, neither of those is actually an option since the only way to use such a patch would be naughty and wrong and cause all those poor hardworking Square-Enix employees to starve to death.

SNES with a patched rom. Of course you should also buy the real game but just play the rom. The glitches in the SNES version are ones that you probably won't notice unless you know about them but which will be really annoying if you do.

And do not play the GBA version. Like many have said the music is important. Oh and it's the best game. Nostalgia and all that but who cares.
