Obesity rates in the U.S. have hit a new high, and public health experts are renewing calls for an aggressive shift in strategy one that would change the food environment through initiatives such as soda taxes, rather than just focusing on behavior.

Nearly four out of 10 U.S. adults were considered obese in 2015-2016, a 30% increase from 1999-2000, according to recent research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics.

The individual choice model for obesity prevention is not working, said Sara Benjamin Neelon, an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and director of the Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion.

Traditionally, public health efforts have centered on communicating messages about what is healthy in the hopes of changing people's behavior, Neelon said. But just telling people how to eat better does not equal behavior change. That's part of the problem."

"It is a concern to see such a high prevalence of obesity," said Craig Hales, the studys lead researcher and a medical epidemiologist at the CDC. Obesity is a risk factor for health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some cancers, he said.

Nah, I think they've been insanely hijacked.

For example a group who I've personally helped wanted to have an Ex-Muslim gay float (for obviously gay guys and girls who grew up Muslim), the thing was "banned" from the event for being "offensive".
At a fucking GAY PRIDE event....and I've heard other stories, but that really rubbed me the wrong way.

Ah, I see.

Also I'm not against them as a whole, no, I think they do a lot of good.

But every single time I hear about gay rights groups caving to pressure from idiotic mad religions who are the very ones responsible for our persecution for centuries...it doesn't do much. Kinda like the idiotic LGBT groups that align themselves with someone like Linda Sarsour...really?
....then these same groups (in Australia anyway) wonder why I then make the point that the Church and Mosques have donated a considerable amount of money to the "no" vote (for gay marriage) - so we're supposed to respect these mad religious laws, but we're also supposed to shut up and not have the same rights, yeah no, that's not the type of shit that I know I actively argued for many times.

</rant>

I much prefer the ones that still try to be creative and aren't just the same old floats year after year, or even the ones that push the envelope like back when I was involved, the whole point back then was to get in peoples face and make the point that we weren't going anywhere.

Very well said, Gavi =)

I can't say I disagree with any of your sentiments.

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/2017/10/19/conservative-iowa-orange-city-host-first-gay-pride-festival/782147001/
A conservative city in northwest Iowa is hosting its first pride festival to celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Orange City will host the three-day OC Pride 2017 event starting Friday, the Sioux City Journal reported. The city has a population of about 6,200.

The festival will have dancing, live music, a movie screening, information booths, storytelling and brunch.

The event was arranged by Cody Bauer, Steve Mahr, David Klennert and Mike Goll. Bauer and Mahr are straight married men who view themselves as LGBTQ allies while Klennert and Goll are newlyweds.

"We've all wanted to do a pride in Orange City for a really long time," Bauer said.

Klennert proposed hosting the festival later in the year so it wouldn't detract from pride events across the country that are held in June, which is Pride Month.

The response to the event has been largely positive, organizers said.

When I was growing up, there was like maybe one or two critically acclaimed gay films (Brokeback Mountain was one of them), that, while great, left you feeling incredibly depressed.

I think everyone who watched similar films was left thinking, "do gays ever get happy endings in movies?"

It makes me happy that films like the oscar contender, Call Me By Your Name, (it's sad, but also very beautiful and hopeful) are a thing now. And it makes me even happier that we're getting romantic comedies like this:

I don't see why it would be necessary to make an established character gay just because of the actor's sexual orientation.
