https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2017/09/21/gender-stereotypes-destroying-girls-and-theyre-killing-boys/688317001/
A new study in the Journal of Adolescent Health found many norms around gender, what's expected of boys and girls, become entrenched in adolescence and have negative impacts that carry into adulthood.

We knew some of this already. Existing research shows gender roles can harm both sexes. But the Global Early Adolescent Study which looked at girls and boys between 10-14 years old in 15 countries with varying income levels found many of these stereotypes are universal, and they become entrenched before 10 years old.

"We were actually anticipating more differences than similarities, and one of the big findings is that there are still very consistent forms of patriarchy around the world," said Kristin Mmari, an associate professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the lead qualitative researcher on the study.

The ideas girls and boys have about gender, the study found, form earlier in adolescence than had previously been measured, Mmari said.

"There seems to be a shift as soon as girls and boys enter this stage, where their attitudes and beliefs about the opposite sex change dramatically," she said. "And they talked about how this was not so in childhood. That they could have these friends opposite sex friends and they were given equal amounts of freedom. They were treated the same, they thought. But once they began puberty, and their bodies developed, their worlds changed."

The biggest myth perpetuated about gender, researchers found, is that once girls hit puberty, they are vulnerable and in need of protection to preserve their sexual and reproductive health, while boys are seen as strong and independent. It's this myth, Mmari said, that changes how the world sees both sexes during adolescence, and how it continues to treat them throughout their lives.

"How you perceive girls and boys is socially driven," Mmari said. "It's not biologically driven."

Among consequences that the study noted when girls conform to gender stereotypes:

Depression
Child marriage
Leaving school early
Exposure to violence

And consequences when boys conform to gender stereotypes:

Engaging in physical violence to a much greater extent than girls
Dying more frequently from unintentional injuries
Being more prone to substance abuse and suicide
Having a shorter life expectancy than women
Mmari said one of the major takeaways from the study is that it's important to challenge gender stereotypes when children are young.

Not all that surprising.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/colts-quarterback-andrew-luck-nfl-quarterback-with-a-book-club/
Long before Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck was reading NFL playbooks, he was simply reading. Bookworm or bibliophile however you describe him that was a young Andrew Luck. Now, because Luck is using his star power to encourage the young and old to read, some people are calling him the NFL's unofficial librarian.

"I don't think I have a conscious, sort of revelation, memory of, 'Oh the first time I read a book was here or there.' I just always remember enjoying reading, and there were always books in our house," Luck told CBS News' Dana Jacobson.

What did he love about books as a kid? "I think it's the same thing as today," he said. "You learn some really cool things ... Reading really requires you to shut everything else off. And I enjoy that."

Whether it was during his college years playing football at Stanford or now in the NFL, Luck says his passion for reading has never dwindled even when his time to do so has.

"I definitely don't read as much when I'm in season. There is no time, probably before bed, ten minutes, just to sort of clear my mind, and I've always felt like it helps me sleep," Luck said.

Nice.

Researchers analyzed 63 studies on religion and intelligence from the past 80 years with differing results to discover the slightly negative correlation between the two.

I don't agree that your explanation of it not being discrimination because it's a religious belief holds weight. It seems that they used their religious belief to discriminate.

Well then you're wrong. They're not refusing to serve lesbians a wedding cake just because they're lesbians. They're refusing to take part in the celebration of something they believe is morally wrong. That's not discrimination. It would be discriminatory if they were refusing to bake a cake simply because of the fact that they were baking if for lesbians, but that's not the case. This isn't about who they were baking cake for, it's about the fact they are taking part in the celebration of something they believe is morally wrong.

If a straight man, who was a friend of the lesbians, had come to the baker and asked them to bake the cake, and said it was for a lesbian wedding, the bakers would have still refused. In that case, they would have been directly serving a straight man. Are they discriminating against him somehow?

If these bakers were refusing to serve homosexuals anything just because they're homosexuals, that would be discriminatory. But that's not what is happening here, and shame on the judge for not recognizing this.

Everything you've described is actually discrimination in the name of religion.

Slightly related, according to Pew Research Center, religious aspects of Christmas are declining:

http://www.pewforum.org/2017/12/12/americans-say-religious-aspects-of-christmas-are-declining-in-public-life/
Not only are some of the more religious aspects of Christmas less prominent in the public sphere, but there are signs that they are on the wane in Americans private lives and personal beliefs as well. For instance, there has been a noticeable decline in the percentage of U.S. adults who say they believe that biblical elements of the Christmas story that Jesus was born to a virgin, for example reflect historical events that actually occurred. And although most Americans still say they mark the occasion as a religious holiday, there has been a slight drop in recent years in the share who say they do this.

http://www.stltoday.com/lifestyles/faith-and-values/christian-america-dwindling-including-white-evangelicals-study-shows
The future of religion in America is young, non-Christian and multicolored.

Almost every Christian denomination in the U.S. shows signs of growing diversity as white Christians, once the majority in most mainline Protestant and Catholic denominations, give way to younger members, who tend to be of different races, according to a study released Wednesday by the Public Religion Research Institute.

And American evangelicals once seemingly immune to the decline experienced by their Catholic and mainline Protestant neighbors are losing numbers and losing them quickly.

Americans also are continuing to move away from organized religion altogether, as atheists, agnostics and those who say they do not identify with any particular religion the group known as the nones hold steady at about one-quarter (24 percent) of the population.

"I am Greg. I am a Roman Catholic priest. And, yes, I am gay!"

A Roman Catholic priest in Milwaukee has come out as gay, writing that he will no longer live in the shadows of secrecy and plans to be authentic to his gay self.

The Rev. Gregory Greiten first disclosed his sexual orientation publicly on Sunday to the St. Bernadette Parish and was greeted with a standing ovation from his parishioners, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. He also wrote a column that was published Monday in the National Catholic Reporter.

"Today, I break the silence and emerge free from the shackles of shame placed upon me at a young age. There is so much to speak about, to repair and to heal much beyond the limits of these words in print," he wrote, adding, "I am gay."

It's rare for a priest to come out. Greiten said he revealed his sexual orientation because he wants to be a role model for others. He said he's helping to break the silence of gay men in the clergy so he could reclaim his own voice.

Times have changed.

Amtrak derailment on poor infrastructure.

http://time.com/5069968/amtrak-derailment-infrastructure-plan-donald-trump/?xid=homepage
As authorities were still trying to determine the causes and the exact death toll of Mondays Amtrak derailment in Washington state, President Donald Trump immediately waded into a policy debate, teasing a soon to be submitted infrastructure plan for roads, bridges, tunnels, railways (and more).

It is all the more reason why we must immediately start fixing the infrastructure of the United States, Trump said in subsequent remarks on Monday.

But theres one problem the Trump Administration already has submitted an infrastructure plan as part of its 2018 budget proposal and it proposes deep cuts to the nations rail systems.

The Presidents infrastructure agenda reflects a bait-and-switch: rhetoric that suggests a commitment to rebuilding, but policies that would undermine our ability to do so, wrote Jacob Leibenluft, a Senior Adviser at Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
