This looks like it's going to be a good movie.

If you haven't yet, I highly recommend the book.

Yes, it's YA, but it's one of those books that are so good that they transcend the target audience for whom they are written.

It's not dumb and childish. It's very introspective, intelligent, and emotional.

Yes, we've had movies like Brokeback Mountain, Carol, and Moonlight all of which are critically acclaimed.

But a mainstream romantic comedy featuring a gay protagonist? That was unheard of until now:

Looks really good. The book is very popular, and I have no doubts the movie will be just as good.

http://variety.com/2017/film/news/box-office-call-me-by-your-name-darkest-hour-openings-1202623116/
Awards contenders Call Me by Your Name and Gary Oldmans Darkest Hour have both scored impressive platform openings over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Coming of age drama Call Me by Your Name, which led the way on Nov. 21 with six Spirit Award nominations, saw stellar returns from a Sony Classics release with $404,874 at four venues in Los Angeles and New York since its Friday launch for an impressive per-screen average of $101,219. Thats the best three-day limited opening of 2017, topping the Lady Bird launch with $364,437 on four screens, and the highest since La La Land opened with $881,104 at five venues last December.

Call Me by Your Name received Spirit nominations for best feature, Timothee Chalamet as best male lead, Armie Hammer as best male supporting, and Luca Guadagnino in the directing category, along with editing and cinematography nods. Chalamet plays a 17-year-old with Hammer as a postgraduate student who comes to stay with his family for the summer in Italy.

Then again, it's not really surprising. The film has garnered so much critical acclaim. And it's based on one of the most revered contemporary books.

Have you seen it yet?

I'm still wondering. So how are "white Christians" feeling oppressed and that there is a war on Christmas?

"Hey, you're traditions, myths and beliefs? They gotta be gay now. Why? Because I'm upset that they weren't gay from the start."

The idea that their traditions/beliefs/myths/whatever need to change is simple enough reason that some would believe this.

Want to know how you can make it worse? Completely marginalized the beliefs while you spout this bullshit by pointing out that it doesn't matter cause "Santa isn't real" and shit like that.

The fucking arrogance of it. He's not only trying to change tradition that people have held dear, but also act like it's no big fucking deal.

If it's no big fucking deal, why does it need to change at all?

1. This book is one obscure instance of someone changing the fictional character of Santa to a gay one. Why does this rock your boat so much?

2. No one is forcing anyone to change their traditions or beliefs. I'm not sure I follow you here. You and anyone else are free to celebrate Santa in any way you want.

An Oklahoma teacher was arrested on Wednesday after authorities learned that she was allegedly having sex with a male teenage student, PEOPLE confirms.

The Canadian County, Oklahoma, Sheriffs Office began investigating Hunter Day after the teens parents contacted them: Evidence of the illicit relationship including explicit text messages and nude photos were allegedly found on the boys phone.

Day, a 22-year-old science teacher at Yukon High School, is facing charges of second-degree rape, facilitating sexual contact with a minor and possession of child pornography.

This is a classic case of a serious breach of public trust, Canadian County Sheriff Chris West told reporters at a news conference this week, according to local news station KWTV. School teachers are entrusted to protect and educate our children, not to engage in an unlawful sexual relationship with them.

He has no time to read, he said: I never have. Im always busy doing a lot. Now Im more busy, I guess, than ever before.

Trumps desk is piled high with magazines, nearly all of them with himself on their covers, and each morning, he reviews a pile of printouts of news articles about himself that his secretary delivers to his desk. But there are no shelves of books in his office, no computer on his desk.

Presidents have different ways of preparing to make decisions. Some read deeply, some prefer to review short memos that condense difficult issues into bite-size summaries, ideally with check-boxes at the bottom of the page. But Trump, poised to become the first major-party presidential nominee since Dwight Eisenhower who had not previously held elected office, appears to have an unusually light appetite for reading.

He said in a series of interviews that he does not need to read extensively because he reaches the right decisions with very little knowledge other than the knowledge I [already] had, plus the words common sense, because I have a lot of common sense and I have a lot of business ability.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/donald-trump-doesnt-read-much-being-president-probably-wouldnt-change-that

Does this surprise anyone? It certainly doesn't surprise me. He never comes across as intelligent and articulate.

'Mary Was a Teenager.' Alabama Republican Uses Jesus to Defend Roy Moore
While some Republicans at the national level spoke out against Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore on Thursday in the wake of allegations that he initiated sexual contact with a 14-year-old when he was in his 30s, Republicans from his own state seemed to have a different view with one citing Jesus parents to defend Moores alleged behavior.

Take Joseph and Mary. Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter. They became parents of Jesus, Alabama state auditor Jim Ziegler told the Washington Examiner on Thursday.

[...]

In his comments on the incident, Ziegler focused on the fact that the report said Moore had not had sex with the girl and that the relationship happened decades ago. He also pointed to the fact that Moores wife is younger than him and the pair began dating shortly after the incidents detailed in the Post report.

Theres just nothing immoral or illegal here, Ziegler added, according to the Examiner. Maybe just a little bit unusual.

http://time.com/5004927/scott-pruitt-epa-advisory-committee/
(WASHINGTON) The head of the Environmental Protection Agency said Tuesday he intends to replace the outside experts that advise him on science and public health issues with new board members holding more diverse views.

In announcing the changes, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt suggested many previously appointed to the panels were potentially biased because they had received federal research grants. The 22 boards advise EPA on a wide range of issues, including drinking water standards and pesticide safety.

Whatever science comes out of EPA shouldnt be political science, said Pruitt, a Republican lawyer who previously served as the attorney general of Oklahoma. From this day forward, EPA advisory committee members will be financially independent from the agency.

Pruitt has expressed skepticism about the consensus of climate scientists that man-made carbon emissions are the primary cause of global warming. He also overruled experts that had recommended pulling a top-selling pesticide from the market after peer-reviewed studies showed it damaged childrens brains.

Pruitt said he will name new leadership and members to three key EPA advisory boards soon the Science Advisory Board, Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee, and the Board of Scientific Counselors.

It was not clear from the EPAs media release if all current board members serving out their appointed terms were immediately dismissed. EPAs press office did not respond to messages seeking clarification on Tuesday.

As part of his directive, Pruitt said he will bar appointees who currently are in receipt of EPA grants or who are in a position to benefit such grants. He exempted people who work at state, local or tribal agencies, saying he wants to introduce more geographic diversity to the panels.

The five-page policy Pruitt issued Tuesday makes no mention of other potential conflicts of interest, such as accepting research funding from corporate interests regulated by EPA.

Tuesdays announcement comes after Pruitt in May said he would not reappoint nine of the 18 members of the Board of Scientific Counselors to serve a second three-year term, as had been customary.

Current board chairwoman Deborah Swackhamer said the members were already required to follow rules intended to prevent conflicts of interests.

It obviously stacks the deck against scientists who do not represent corporate special interests, said Swackhamer, a retired professor who taught environmental health sciences at the University of Minnesota. It speaks volumes that people funded by special interests are OK to be advisers, but not those who have received federal grants.

Senate Environment Committee Chairman John Barrasso, a Wyoming Republican who shares Pruitts skepticism of mainstream climate science, cheered the move. He said EPAs science boards would now better reflect the views of rural states like his own.

But environmentalists worried that Pruitt will now select board members with financial ties to the fossil fuel and chemical industries.

The Trump EPAs continued attack on science will likely be one of the most lasting and damaging legacies of this administration, said Sen. Tom Udall of New Mexico, the ranking Democrat on the appropriations subcommittee that approves EPAs funding. Pruitt is purging expert scientists from his science boards and replacing them with mouthpieces for big polluters.

Just. . . wow.
