As authorities were still trying to determine the causes and the exact death toll of Mondays Amtrak derailment in Washington state, President Donald Trump immediately waded into a policy debate, teasing a soon to be submitted infrastructure plan for roads, bridges, tunnels, railways (and more).

It is all the more reason why we must immediately start fixing the infrastructure of the United States, Trump said in subsequent remarks on Monday.

But theres one problem the Trump Administration already has submitted an infrastructure plan as part of its 2018 budget proposal and it proposes deep cuts to the nations rail systems.

The Presidents infrastructure agenda reflects a bait-and-switch: rhetoric that suggests a commitment to rebuilding, but policies that would undermine our ability to do so, wrote Jacob Leibenluft, a Senior Adviser at Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Yep. The Lakewood city mayor said in an open meeting a few weeks ago that the changes to the line were unnecessary for one, and risky. He called out that they didn't implement some simple safety measures they should have, and that there would inevitably be an accident. He at least had the sense not to do an "I told you so" because he actually felt awful that such a tragedy occurred.

Can't remember if I voted for him before I moved to Portland but he's been pretty reliable for my old home town since he's been in office.
