Ah, gotcha. That is pretty funny, considering that I made that spelling it up on the spot. Way back when I'd read the term bourgeoises long before I first heard it, so up until that point I always pronounced it phonetically in my head 'boor-gee-oh-i-ses.'.

One thing I'll say is that this 2007 open world game has better textures on the world than Dark Souls II

It's been almost ten years since I played Oblivion - I was obsessed with the the game and logged thousands of hours on it prior to Skyrim - and one of the reasons I'm looking forward to replaying Oblivion sometime soon is to see how the graphics hold up. Cyrodiil genuinely felt like a real, believable worldspace at the time, and Skyrim never quite had that same effect; no matter what graphical mods and tree replacers I pile onto Skyrim, the overworld too often feels like a bunch of mismatched shapes and textures thrown together randomly, instead of a cohesive, believable worldspace. So I'm curious to see how Oblivion holds up now that I've stepped down the texture mod rabbit hole and have been cursed with a critical eye for those types of details.

Plus that'll give you incentive to get your Smithing skill up to 40 and unlock the Arcane Mastery perk a little earlier than usual.

So I was ultimately more forgiving of 4 than most, in spite of its more obvious steps backwards.

The Brotherhood of Steel is an option then.

But, yeah, the Settlement system needed more work. Settlements in more than one cell have a glitch since launch that causes settler resources to not count correctly, impacting happiness(which draws attacks and drops productivity). Also, the more Settlements you get the more likely you are to experience a string of attacks; which happens because a single attack drops happiness EVERYWHERE which in turns leads to a higher probability of attack. There's a trigger point where attacks seem to happen far too often, somewhere around when you have 20(out of 30) settlements.

The Radiant quest system for settlements is annoying as well. If you focus on settlements then the quests will come in groups of three in perpetuity, and failure can mean loss of thousands of units of crafting resources. So the only way to avoid it is to avoid both Preston and Radio Freedom/The Castle. Bethesda failed to grasp that such quests should always be opt-in by design.

Agreed, having Preston's radiant quests be a forced perpetual loop was an atrocious design choice, and I'd wager it's the chief flaw that gave people who were on the fence about the settlement mechanic a hard shove towards hating it. Those memes certainly weren't inspired by Preston's sparkling personality.

that's my biggest gripe.

I have some kind of OCD when it comes to saving, so I never lose much progress if I have to reload another save. I also used the walkthroughs so I could make the most favorable decisions for my character, so that took a huge stress weight off of my shoulders.

but that settlement babysitting was so lame. at some point they shouldn't ever have to need you again, and yet...

The biggest problem is that the mechanics / RNG are weighed sooooo heavily in favor of settlements getting their asses kicked if you leave them to defend themselves. You have to give them an insanely-high defense rating (150-200 minimum) just to give them even odds of a successful self-defense. Fortunately this outcome can usually be save-scummed if you happen to know when the message is about to pop up - saving and fast-traveling to Home Plate (the message will activate upon arrival) is usually the best way to do it. Anyway, this could have not only been counterbalanced by evening out the success rates, but also by giving you some incentive to let settlers have their own victory: 'Tenpines Bluff successfully defended itself; 500 caps and 100 rounds of [insert ammunition] were looted from the attackers.'

And of course that's not even taking into account the bugs, wherein settlements will randomly forget that they do indeed have sufficient beds / electricity / whatever, and the happiness rating plummets while you're not paying attention.

i had a blast with it, personally. i got creative with it, i made a secure test chamber at The Castle for that teleporter thing, a Minutemen Embassy to the BoS at Boston Airport, a historically inspired abbey at Abernathy farms, among other themed builds. any time i've heard people complaining about how bad the settlement building was, it always turns out that all they ever did with it was build farming shanty towns. no wonder they didn't get much out of it.

The actual building aspect can be a blast, and I myself have spent countless hours on it. Where it drops the ball is when you throw settlers / NPCs into the mix, and how little in-game return there is on the mechanic. NPC pathfinding is already bad enough in Bethesda games, so throw in self-created structures and you've got NPCs constantly glitching through ceilings or getting stuck on walls because they're shooting for the shortest distance between themselves and their next sandbox objective. Settlement building is there for its own sake, and while it's something I've wanted in these games since Oblivion and was plenty enamored with it myself, I can't blame others for not finding any value in it.

Not only that, but the movie subverted that trope where the new girl comes in and takes down the popular, egotistical, coercive ringleader by having Beca and Aubrey work through their differences and lift each other up rather than having Beca replace Aubrey and run her out of the group as other movies of these types tend to do. That plot point really surprised and impressed me.

Excellent point, I had forgotten that but I remember really appreciating that angle / subversion while I was watching it. It's pretty rare when a movie manages to turn a villain / antagonist into an ally - let alone in a believable and meaningful way - and I love it when this happens.

No.

One of the criticisms of the two movies is that the Bride is often seen as unrelatable to most female audience members. It's not very empowering if the people who are supposed to be empowered don't see themselves as the main character.

Pretty spot-on, honestly. I absolutely adored Kill Bill for a time, but even during its heydey I found myself feeling that, outside of a couple key emotional scenes, the Bride is simply unrelatable in general; and I imagine that goes doubly for female audience members. I think her biggest problem is that the vast majority of her dialogue falls into that sort of A New Hope-style 'looks good on paper but sounds back when spoken' overworked writing. I always thought it was sort of a funny meta-commentary when, towards the ends of part 2, she poses a particularly stilted line to Bill and, in his half-drunk state, he asks something like 'I'm sorry...was that supposed to be a question?'

Wii_Shaker posted...
I hate to say it but Pitch Perfect is probably the greatest girl power movie of all time.

I saw this for the first time recently and I'm finding it hard to disagree. Upon retrospect, I think one of the things that sets it apart is that the girls' victory was made better by the fact that the writers didn't feel the need to knock down the boy characters by making them all stupid and unlikeable (Ghostbusters 2016 immediately springs to mind as a bad example of this); the boys were great, but the girls were greater, and it felt like the competition and subsequent victory was genuinely earned.

It's not my favorite (and I often find myself hesitant to praise it due to my allegiance to FF6 as being the GOAT), but it's an excellent game.

One feather in FF9's cap that most people don't notice: there are no palette-swap enemies in the game. Apart from maybe one or two instances (such as the two tunnel worm bosses that have mostly-similar designs), every single monster in the game has a unique design. FF 12 is the only game in the franchise imo that can rival FF9 in terms of level of detail + cohesiveness of art and world design.
