I really wish the final boss wasnt so stupidly random to end the game. Thats one of the only flaws it has.

It's not my favorite but one aspect that stands out is that the lesser villains come across as actually threatening. Like the Black Waltzes are pretty terrifying. Even moreso when they're compared to guys like Ultros (who I love but he's goofy af) and Cid Raines or that guy that dresses like Cid Raines in XV.

I just finished it recently myself for the first time. I thought it was excellent, and easily the best Final Fantasy game I've played. Probably my favorite cast in the series as well.

Still dislike the concept of tying learnable abilities to equipment.
It ends up being anti-grinding tech and nigh-mandatory grinding simultaneously.

That makes absolutely zero sense. I could see if you had a problem with the randomness of the Trance system, but the combat itself is identical to any other turn based game.

Also the concept of using weapons to earn permanent skills was so freaking cool.

ATB is badly mishandled. It's basically a FF4 where even "attack" has a hidden delay for some reason.
"It's your turn!"
[pick action]
[enemy acts]
[another enemy acts]
"it's that guy's turn!"
[pick that guy's action]
[another enemy acts]
[your guy finally acts]

Blue Dragon is basically the same combat engine, but it lets you know when your action is actually going to happen.

The game speed is genuinely 40% of ff7. Combat animations are also super long and spell effects persist during animations so spells like regen essentially full heal you with any animation. The combat priority turn order is so busted that the team does more dps if you make one of your party members afk/guard then pass turn to either steiner or Zidane. The combat is also piss easy, then a massive spike in stats is required at the last 15% of the game. The encounter rate is the highest or any ff game besides ff2 and the slow combat startup along with long time to escape from battle along with trance going off while running away and having to wait for the animation to finish makes exploring a nightmare.

Trance is also supremely busted. Reg attacks do like 500 dmg for awhile but even early dyne and other tranches hit for upwards of like 8k dmg, nuking bosses.

Item equipment is also utterly devoid of any strategy. There are no stats, builds, and you just buy the newest item in the shop and equip the one with highest dmg or defense or gives you a new ability

I could go on and on, but wow is the gameplay bad. I still love the game for its other strengths like story, soundtrack, etc. but wow it makes ff8 junction system look functional. Thank God they abandoned atb in ffx

Usually both, but in the other order.
Grind AP until you have all the abilities the game allows you to get at that point, then just equip the one with the best numbers.

It's not my favorite (and I often find myself hesitant to praise it due to my allegiance to FF6 as being the GOAT), but it's an excellent game.

One feather in FF9's cap that most people don't notice: there are no palette-swap enemies in the game. Apart from maybe one or two instances (such as the two tunnel worm bosses that have mostly-similar designs), every single monster in the game has a unique design. FF 12 is the only game in the franchise imo that can rival FF9 in terms of level of detail + cohesiveness of art and world design.

I have to say, that I completely agree with you. I bought the game at release, played it through to about 80% complete and then completely lost interest. The story is fine but I found the battles to be so absurdly tedious that I didn't want to play anymore. I didn't beat it until maybe 2 years after release.

I've gone back many times and tried to play through it... I do like the characters and the world setting, but my god, the battles are just so boring. I always make it to around Ipsen's castle before I'm like "Meh, I'm good". I've even re-purchased it on PS4 and Switch, hoping the 'remastered' versions would be enough for me want to play through it again, but nope.... same thing happened. I got to the Shrines and just... lost interest.

I've bought the game 3 times, I really want to like it and I can understand why people say it's one of their favorites, I guess it just ain't for me though. I always go back to 4 - 7.

The PC version allows you to fast forward and avoid or easy win battles. Even without messing with it, the amount of random encounters is far lower than the original. The Moguri Mod makes the game look even better.

You know, I should really look into that. I've played around with mods on FF7 through 7th Heaven, and with some of them you almost feel like you're playing a different game, like with the New Threat mod for example.

I think you've given me something to do when I get home tonight
