With mods it's even better.

TC, Fallout 3 is also amazing in its own right, as is new vegas. (I agree with others that they are superior)

There is a project that combines both of those games, and fixes bugs in both, it's called Tale of Two Wastelands (TTW for short).

TTW at this point fixes so many bugs, it runs better than EITHER game by themselves. It is balanced together, and you can take your progress from Fallout 3 and all its expansions, to New vegas and all its expansions (And fan made expansions).

It turns the two of them combined into one of the biggest RPGs ever, and easily the biggest post-apocalypse RPG ever. And like I said, it runs better than both, so even if you don't want to play both with one character, it's still better to play either of those games on TTW.

If you google that, you'll find their site. However, it would be worth it to watch that every few weeks. SOmetime probably in the next 1 or 2 months, they are going to launch a huge years in the making update. TTW 3.3, watch out for that (current is 3.2). But New Vegas modders are really excited for 3.3 cause the guys working on that have fixed so many bugs across Fallout 3 and New Vegas, those games are going to be buttery smooth with that new update.

It's one of the most impressive modding projects for any game I've seen. It brings Fallout 3 up to the standards of new vegas and even beyond (brings in all new mechanics from vegas, survival, ironsights, more). And because New Vegas the game is the base, you can still use many New Vegas mods, while Fallout 3 mods are slowly ported over by the community.

And there's plenty of nice new mods, that make the game mechanically feel very nice and more modern. Not completely modern, but better.

It's a project most people sleep on, even though it is the most premium way to enjoy those games as of right now.

Fallout 4 is a lazy game honestly.

The characters dont matter, your choices dont matter, the map is huge but empty, the story is shit, the twist is meh and given away early, Beths still doesnt understand what fallout is.

Fallout 4 being "ok" infuriates me because it SHOULD be an amazing game. Far Harbor shows that they can but that still infuriates me because its essentially just Point Lookout.

I love playing Fallout 4. Only thing that's a big miss for me is Preston and his stupid settlement BS. I don't want to constantly babysit a bunch of wasteland hobos when I'm busy doing far better shit.

that's my biggest gripe.

I have some kind of OCD when it comes to saving, so I never lose much progress if I have to reload another save. I also used the walkthroughs so I could make the most favorable decisions for my character, so that took a huge stress weight off of my shoulders.

but that settlement babysitting was so lame. at some point they shouldn't ever have to need you again, and yet...

The biggest problem is that the mechanics / RNG are weighed sooooo heavily in favor of settlements getting their asses kicked if you leave them to defend themselves. You have to give them an insanely-high defense rating (150-200 minimum) just to give them even odds of a successful self-defense. Fortunately this outcome can usually be save-scummed if you happen to know when the message is about to pop up - saving and fast-traveling to Home Plate (the message will activate upon arrival) is usually the best way to do it. Anyway, this could have not only been counterbalanced by evening out the success rates, but also by giving you some incentive to let settlers have their own victory: 'Tenpines Bluff successfully defended itself; 500 caps and 100 rounds of [insert ammunition] were looted from the attackers.'

And of course that's not even taking into account the bugs, wherein settlements will randomly forget that they do indeed have sufficient beds / electricity / whatever, and the happiness rating plummets while you're not paying attention.

I enjoyed it, but I really didn't like the whole settlement system they focused so heavily on. I would have much rather there have been like 2-3 spots for settlements while also having more actual towns/cities with their own set of unique NPCs (don't really have to be unique per se but at least have more to them than the no name generic ones that show up to your settlements).

I really like Fallout 4 and still play it a lot. I love the settlement building and while it's not exactly the greatest combat in a game, it has improved from the previous games and can be pretty fun.

It's flawed though. The factions kinda suck. The Institute is generically evil for the most part thus not very interesting. The Railroad aren't very interesting either, and while their goal is noble, it's just weirdly specific. The Minutemen are basically the just the good option, but you can still do something with that story wise. Also, Preston should have been the new general and you juts help him. It makes no sense to be anointed leader after just meeting the guy. It's just lazy. The Brotherhood of Steel...are the Brotherhood of Steel. Nothing really compelling going on there either.

It's also basically Fallout's Skyrim. Bethesda "streamlined" the games, but like with Skyrim, they went too far with it in 4. Many RPG elements are removed, "dungeons" feel more generic, loot is more generic leveled stuff, more generic radiant quests, etc.

Even with all of that, it's still a very fun game and worth playing.

The Brotherhood of Steel is an option then.

But, yeah, the Settlement system needed more work. Settlements in more than one cell have a glitch since launch that causes settler resources to not count correctly, impacting happiness(which draws attacks and drops productivity). Also, the more Settlements you get the more likely you are to experience a string of attacks; which happens because a single attack drops happiness EVERYWHERE which in turns leads to a higher probability of attack. There's a trigger point where attacks seem to happen far too often, somewhere around when you have 20(out of 30) settlements.

The Radiant quest system for settlements is annoying as well. If you focus on settlements then the quests will come in groups of three in perpetuity, and failure can mean loss of thousands of units of crafting resources. So the only way to avoid it is to avoid both Preston and Radio Freedom/The Castle. Bethesda failed to grasp that such quests should always be opt-in by design.

Agreed, having Preston's radiant quests be a forced perpetual loop was an atrocious design choice, and I'd wager it's the chief flaw that gave people who were on the fence about the settlement mechanic a hard shove towards hating it. Those memes certainly weren't inspired by Preston's sparkling personality.

It was always destined to be a step back from New Vegas, so I went into it comparing it to 3 exclusively. 4 did actually fix - or make noteworthy attempts to fix - some of my more glaring grievances with 3, particularly in the area of cohesive worldbuilding. So I was ultimately more forgiving of 4 than most, in spite of its more obvious steps backwards.

I felt like 3 had more memorable quests because it was the first Fallout in that style, and for many people one of the first open world first person games they ever played.

Your first time is gonna be memorable as hell. Not that it was bad or anything like that. I felt 3 and 4 were pretty close in comparison.
