#19: Pot of Greed
First TCG release: Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon (2002-03-08)

v.

The one. The only.

This card is actually responsible for getting me back into Yugioh this time around. And it was all the fucking memes I happened to run into which triggered my nostalgia and the rest is history. A couple unfortunate things about this card: First, the original print is only a rare which makes it the only non-foil member of the Power 5 despite being the most broken. And second, the first print also has three unnecessary words which kind of ruins the most straightforward card effect ever when it could undoubtedly be shorter.

Other than that, absolutely iconic (how many times have I used that word by now). One of the only(?) cards that every deck (Im sure someone will come up with one exception) would play if it was legal since theres virtually no downside. And the art is terrific as always. Look at those teeth.

First TCG release: Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon (2002-03-08)

I love numbered groups. Like the Elite Four, the Three Musketeers, the Gotei 13, the Six Samurai, etc. So when the Power 5 became a thing, I was totally into the concept. I mean, even as a dumbass kid there was no way you couldnt see that these were five of the strongest cards in the game (not to mention, they were mentioned in the instruction manuals that came with the starter decks). Sadly, I never had all five in the same deck at once. Dark Holes the weakest one of the five but it was so ubiquitous even in the playground days (as opposed to Raigeki which only came from a booster pack) that theres strong feelings of nostalgia there. The art is beautiful as well although its unfortunate its only a Super.

i was going to mention this card during honorable mentions but since it's already been brought up

#21: Imperial Order
First TCG release: Pharaohs Servant (2002-10-20)

This is it. This is the fucking card I actually pulled out of a pack and traded away for a Griggle (+ Rush Recklessly). The sets back then also had only two Secret Rares out of like 100+ cards (the other one in this set being Jinzo) and while some sets like LOB had pretty meh Secrets (Tri-Horn & Gaia the Dragon Champion) both of the Secrets in this set were INSANE. The guy I traded it away to was the same guy I beat in the bet duel with Scapegoat and its not like he was even misleading me or anything. He asked me what I wanted for it and I told him. I came up with those answers out of all the cards he could possibly have had. And you could see the look of genuine confusion in his face when I named my terms. I mean what can I say, I thought this card was bad because why would I want to PAY life points and not even be able to play my own Spell cards?

Obviously I got over my aversion to paying LP and in fact this is the first of my PERSONAL TRINITY of LP cost cards that I realized were actually insane and grew to love, although this is the only one out of the three that I dont have my original copy of unfortunately. Lets talk about the artwork though. Just like Solemn Judgment, it features an old man holding his hand out for a negation. But whereas SJs evokes a more Gandalfian You Shall Not Pass feeling, IOs is a Im DONE WITH THIS SHIT Look how hes holding his hand out at an angle for you to kiss the ring you filthy peasant. Its OVER. All SPELLS. NO.

One other thing Ill comment on that affects the ranking of this card (and others) is personal pull history. Considering other factors like competitive viability, artwork, etc. equal, a card that I personally pulled is the one Im going to have more attachment to because it was my card: I didnt trade for it, nobody else owned it first but me. And obviously buying singles is way more practical (and what Ive done for years now) but that feeling of opening a booster pack and pulling something incredible is one of the best feelings about trading cards for me so its left me a bit sad that a vast majority of the time, youll largely get garbage and filler from packs that just make it so impractical to buy them unless youre buying boxes (and even then). So yeah a lot of the later cards are high as they are not only because of their effects, artwork, etc. but largely because in my sentimentality I see them as my cards first and foremost.

#22: Kuriboh
First TCG release: Metal Raiders (2002-06-26)

I dont know if the actual card effect of taking no battle damage has ever been used in the anime but Kuriboh is the prime example to me of how much less from hand effects feel like real monsters. When they activate it from the hand, you just see them discard it into their duel disk graveyard yet every time we see Kuriboh summoned on the field its been absolutely iconic taking down all those BIG monsters like Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon and Thousand-Eyes Restrict with Multiply and in the filler virtual world arc where it picked itself as Yami Yugis deckmaster. Its been pointed out before but it could have maybe reached greater mascot potential if the original artwork was a little cuter, or looked like the anime version. But Im also appreciative of the wide-eyed creepy look and there are the other Kuriboh cards to supply the mainstream cuteness.

#24: Honest
First TCG release: Light of Destruction (2008-05-13)

Mostly here for the gorgeous art (the WINGS) but I have mixed feelings about handtraps. Its just not as COOL as a summon and lacks that feeling of oh Im actually PLAYING this monster. Even if you just use a card that you summoned for a very small effect, it still managed to hit the field. Or another way to think about it, if this was the anime and a monster was summoned you would get the hologram of it. At that point youre actually summoning/playing the monster whereas if you have a card like Honest, it retains its card form and you would like never see it and it would lack those personal feelings of attachment (at least for me) that come about when a monster actually battles or something.

I love the art so much though.

#27: Graceful Charity
First TCG release: Starter Deck Pegasus (2003-03-30)

Oh whats that? You dont know what this card does? Graceful Charity lets me draw three new cards and discard two! Another broken card but the specific reason this card stuck with me is in fact anime related and how most of the time when they DRAW a card, theres so much unnecessary STYLE which is really the best thing about anime in general and how it injects so much flare into typically mundane activities resulting in hilarity. Ever since the first Rare Hunter drew his cards and you hear the tik-tik-tik as he draws his cards. So good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjUVAmsAm64

Heres a compilation someone made of the times they use Graceful Charity in the anime. I think the only must-see one is Mais at 1:10.

Bit of an afterthought but the angel artwork is really a plus. If there had been a pure angel archetype I would have loved to play it.

This is one of the craziest cards ever. First of all its iconic as hell because of the anime and was a feature in not one but TWO of Joeys duels (remember when he forgot to take it out of his deck after the Weevil duel so he had to summon it against Mako?). But also, the card effect reads that you put it FACE UP into your opponents deck and shuffle it. Like what the fuck? Now, whenever I played casually with this and its effect went off, I would just shuffle it to the top so that my opponent would draw it immediately and take 1000 damage. Now, did they want me (the owner of the card) to shuffle it or my opponent to shuffle their own deck. Because either way that ends with some fuckery. Not even taking card sleeves into account, its fucking FACE UP.

But yeah this card is really bad lol

I actually love finding out about degenerate strategies in any game and most of the time think they are amazing and hilarious (when Im not on the receiving end of course lol). I wasnt playing when Yata-Lock was a thing but a random conversation with some friends who had played competitively led me to find out about this card and I thought wait thats actually amazing and this quickly became one of my favs. Theres so much to love about this: Its a cool raven, it returns to your hand after every turn which means its safe from a lot of opponent card effects and it has 200 ATK which means any death by this will be a slow and painful one, and the pairing with Chaos Emperor Dragon makes like the picture-perfect crime duo with one GIANT DRAGON and one TINY bird.

The only Blackwing on the list although I did consider a few others. I didnt play them as much as Harpies and was way more casual with my deckbuilding choices but they were my second deck. Gale is a pretty good mascot as far as things go (idk if he actually is or even if they have any presence in the anime or anything like that). First of all, hes an actual bird and not a weirdo in a bird suit like some Blackwings. Second hes cuteee (or is that just me) but ALSO is a cool buddy bird because hes so tiny. Not to mention hes incredibly versatile with being a very easy special summon AND a tuner. And of course, that effect to deal with problem monsters.

NO

Absolutely insane card from Metal Raiders and the thing is this type of card only got better as time went on because other cards got stronger. For sure I did a double take when I saw the Half your life points bit because bro thats 4000 life points at the beginning. I didn't even have the opportunity to play this card (and I know for sure I wouldn't have played even if I had a copy) but also I didn't really see anybody else either. I think 4000 seemed too costly to a lot more people back then.

Also I havent mentioned this for every card but it goes without saying that the artwork is a big factor for all of them and this one is no exception. Its just some old man with a magnificent beard telling you NO. Legend.
