here comes yet another Forrest Gump comparison. although Bloom comes off a little less charming and more of an idiot. i really could not get over the "working for literally a sentence about a girl you don't know anything about" no matter how romantic or fantastical it was supposed to be. some things are just too offensive to look over i guess. some really fun stuff here though, especially early on that again reminded me "wow Tim Burton can make a good movie." Considering I associate him with directing my least favorite movie of all time more than anything else these days, it was a pleasant reminder. The baby just popping out and sliding across the floor like the force it came out with just rendered any umbilical cord nonexistent got a pretty big unexpected laugh from me.

i don't know why but the actor for the older version of the son seemed so out of place that it was almost uncanny like he was not a real person. pretty distracting though not through any fault of the movie's. overall enjoyable. 6/10

during my first playthrough i got really impatient to see the end of the story so i just left all the cabaret and real estate stuff to the side saying i'd finish it later and just rushed through all the story stuff.

that was like two years ago though. whoops.

i'm so fucking annoyed

i saw a listing for a card typically around $80 for $20 and i had an inkling there was something fishy going on but i checked the picture and details of the listing and it seemed fine although the seller was either way undervaluing it or up to something.

well he sent me another edition of the same card that's valued around $15 and then when i said he sent a different one than the one listed he claims that i'm lying. after going to tcgplayer directly he asks what i would like to resolve the issue and i ask for a full refund and i'll send the card back. then he says that "we can't trust each other" so is $5 refund okay.

man fuck this guy

turns out it was not stolen but the delivery guy just delivered it to the house across from me and the neighbor looked at it, saw it wasn't their item but STILL SAID HE WOULD TAKE IT

WHAT THE FUCK

but like a couple hours before i found all this out i had contacted customer service and just said they would send a replacement. was like the easiest process in the world.

but to counteract this issue being solved of course i have another issue with some punk on tcgplayer who sent me the wrong item and is claiming i'm lying. like it's worth my time trying to scam some seller out of $20

So I've been mulling this over and I think this next set of recommendations might be the last. Some other factors involved but mainly that I don't have as much free time as I did when we started.

I took it as showing the instability/stress of the relationship or like a home movie effect, but either way it is pretty distracting. I think he just likes stylizing things to call attention to themselves, this is a guy who added Von to his name in film school to sound more interesting.

i thought something along those lines too. but yeah ultimately it ends up being more distracting than anything else for me and i'm just reminded of all the stupid "stylizations" and bad editing that were in Nymphomaniac. that might have seriously just poisoned me against von Trier forever lol

Im kind of ready to write off von Trier entirely. I guess I should watch Antichrist before making it official but other than Dancer in the Dark, the last two films Ive seen from him have not been my thing and one of them was just outright stupid.

Theres some things I like about the film like some of the shots, performances, certain scenes, etc. but after I finish most of what sticks in my mind is the distractingly nonstop shaking camera, poorly written dialogue and indifference towards the characters. The douchebag boss character in particular just felt so manufactured and contrived that by the time the plate breaking scene happened, I was kind of tuning out.

I did like the first part more than the second; seeing Justines lethargy and the complete lack of emotional connection to anyone despite the physical proximity was pretty good.

I randomly got to thinking about Gaspar Noe and how he also does some weird fucked up shit but how I was pretty much intrigued throughout his films unlike von Triers where I can mostly just feel my impatience growing. 5/10

One thing I appreciated more on re-watch was the commentary on how much the media we consume can dominate our memories and thoughts. Lucy drops the the Oscar Wilde quote about "most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their live a mimicry, their passions a quotation". The old guy's mind is stuck on 'trivial pursuits' and almost everything running around his head is a media reference.

i think another aspect of this is that for the janitor, it's also the only thing he has to fall back on i.e. he has no life memories of his own. it's just a lifetime of regrets over the inaction in his own life so he has to live vicariously through the media.
