Yet, this film think it's clever to toss in a bunch of random twists at the end while completely bullshitting its way through the middle, then have the nerve to think its earned the right to point and laugh at those same twists told in much better and much more memorable stories. I always feel when a parody does not respect the original works, then it just comes off as petty and mean-spirited.

yeah kind of like when a straw man is set up and people spend a lot of time attacking that instead of the actual argument

i never knew you could spoiler images here tho. have no familiarity with Punisher but it's always enlightening when you discover something was actually a reference.

did this apply for Murder by Death?

i wanted to at least check out the quality but there's no results

i have seen full uploads of movies before on youtube before; usually it's for way older stuff that i'm not sure i'd like but i've also found that it's also incredibly easy to get distracted watching on youtube than streaming/offline video file. so i would just end up stopping every like 10 minutes or so to check subscriptions and stuff

Are we intended to view Elaine as victimized by the men around her, taking the blame for their deaths when, as she said, what happens to them was not her doing and she shouldn't be made to be a monster simply for being the target of their affection? Though that theory becomes much more p.

She is the embodiment of the feminine ideal. She has that line in the beginning when she's talking to the wife character about how you should just please your man or something (she always cooks the men a meal before giving them sex). So basically the men are "killed" by buying into/falling in love with the idea of the perfect woman who is only there to please the man. There's a line the cop says at the end about this, I'll look this up later but basically he rejects the idea of the feminine ideal iirc. Well Elaine who's been molding herself based that can't take that. There's the white horse, fairy tale imagery to signal her beliefs as mere fantasy but that's what she's about. As for the matter of victimization, yes she is in a way. How did she come to these beliefs? They were reinforced by society and the men around her and eventually turned her into the 'witch' she became. My take for now anyway.

Vote for any and all movies you would be interested in seeing for the next week (~Mar. 19th, NA). The movie with the most overall votes wins. You may rank your votes from most preferred to least (do not rank movies you would not vote for) so I don't have to @ you back in case of a tie. If you do not intend to vote and are fine with whatever wins, please reply with "No Vote" so there is as little of a waiting period as possible. If you list multiple movies in your vote but you are not ranking them, please include "Not Ranked" along with your vote (I will assume they are ranked otherwise). Please vote by Friday, Mar. 19th, 8:00 PM EST/5:00 PM PST

Black Narcissus (1947)
Witness for the Prosecution (1957)

I think the movie would've still got a six out of me outside of the renaissance fair. Everything else felt like it was progressing the movie at a good pace but that section of the movie in particular really dragged for me.

think this was my least favorite part as well. was feeling very awkward watching the play they were putting on and even more awkward every time it cut to the audience members laughing

The Love Witch

clarification about 'The Room' comment: not that i think TLW is a bad movie or even a "so-bad-it's-good" movie but the bizarre dialogue and the sudden delivery like "All the love and great sex you were giving me?" and "What turns you on?" like immediately after a character being handed a gigantic cup just cracked me up and The Room was just what came to mind.

Anyway, first thing about this movie: aesthetically one of the best i've ever seen. The colors, costume design, and everything related to how it looks is amazing. The cafe(?) or tea place or whatever and when it shows all of the customers together aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

I can definitely see why it's said to be a cult movie and why Snake said expecting it to be polarizing. The "bad" acting, stilted dialogue and delivery and it's just...corny including the fakest punch ever thrown with almost nonsensical plot elements (all of that kind of just accentuate and fits with the whole supernatural 'witch' aspect in a way), and I could easily see people dismissing this as 'bad' or overindulgent. I thought it was hilarious at times and I would definitely be interested in a rewatch as I can imagine it being more endearing on future watches.

The character of Elaine herself is just really visually striking and memorable. There's movie characters that I immediately forget the names of because they serve more as functions of the film than lasting, memorable characters but she's definitely going to be in my mind for some time. ICONIC(?)

Very telling dialogue/themes present throughout that I'd love to be able to organize into a cohesive writeup since I think there's a bit to unpack. honestly probably won't happen because let's be real.

anyway, on a first impression i'm feeling a 7/10.

hoopla is pretty much the same as kanopy. if your library gives you access to it, you can stream the movies they have with a library card.

although with hoopla you're limited to 5 titles a month while kanopy gives you 10. and kanopy overall seems it has a larger selection and better user interface. i've used both though and they both work fine.

i actually have two library cards from different counties which is why i have access to both.

pretty shitty looking locations

the sound designer (Vladimir Sharun) believes that shooting in some of those locations literally contributed to the death of the director and others (radiation poisoning)

""We were shooting near Tallinn in the area around the small river Piliteh with a half-functioning hydroelectric station," says Vladimir Sharun. "Up the river was a chemical plant and it poured out poisonous liquids downstream. There is even this shot in Stalker: snow falling in the summer and white foam floating down the river. In fact it was some horrible poison. Many women in our crew got allergic reactions on their faces. Tarkovsky died from cancer of the right bronchial tube. And Tolya Solonitsyn too. That it was all connected to the location shooting for Stalker became clear to me when Larissa Tarkovskaya died from the same illness in Paris..."

STALKER

honestly would not be surprised if very few people end up watching/finishing this since it's basically a 3 hour film where "nothing happens" and guys just walk and talk. it's been on my watchlist for a while because of its reputation but when i looked at the runtime back then, i knew it was very unlikely i would watch it without any prodding from something like this topic.

this is a film i feel like i have to watch twice but don't know if i'll ever watch a second time. there's some pretty neat stuff technically (sooo many looooong shots) but as for the content itself, i kind of feel like i would have rather read this as a book because of my attention span. it's very allegorical/symbolic. i typically write down quotes that jump out at me when watching but it became quickly obvious that because of the style of the dialogue where everything seems so intentional that it wouldn't be feasible for this film. it's also something that you kind of have to be in the right mood/frame of mind for and i wasn't for a decent part of it.

it's interesting to think about but also easy to just say fuck it and give up thinking about it. based on my first watch of it, i'd give it a 5/10 because i can't say i really "enjoyed" it but i'm glad i finally got to watch it.
