Disagree with the idea that more expensive banh mis are necessarily worse, and this is kinda my point-- other sandwiches are allowed to experiment with more expensive ingredients (or alternatively claim cost of labor, but that's another thing), but if you do something similar with a banh mi then people object.
I see your point, but there ARE a ton of expensive banh mis, moreso than cheap ones. So they are allowed to experiment just the same. It's just sad when you're surrounded by $15 banh mis and can't get a real one.

The 2 best ones I've had were a $4 super classic one, and a $12 one from a local shop. But I've had so many meh expensive ones made by non-Viet people.

Tacos took a super long time to get "permission" to be more premium though, and they still struggle with it (see: birria).

Why spending a few hundred for a restaurant experience which blows your hair back is considered beneath other experiences that last the same or slightly longer will always baffle me.
Reminds me something I thought of here though. It's all about comparison. Food is one of the most common things in our lives and we have thousands of points of comparisons. So it's really easy to look at the $200 restaurant bill and remember a bill from 24 hours ago that was only $15. You can't do that with concerts and trips and big purchases as easily.

I mean I see gamers complaining about indie games with hundreds of hours of gameplay being $30 instead of $15, or that a $10 is too short and you should wait until it's on sale for $5. But then they buy some wendy's for $15 without even thinking.

It's all because you can easily compare the $30 new indie game purchase to the old $5 indie game that's on a deep discount. There's a thousand cheaper options right there on Steam at all times. But you can't get fast food for less than $15 nowadays, so wendy's seems fine.

Those aren't the best examples. Wagyu sandwiches do typically get into the $30-40 range, same with lobster rolls. You should suspect ones that don't since they are probably fake and bad. Banh mi is supposed to be $4 for the same reason, since the $10-15 ones typically taste worse with a bunch of extra crap.

Complaining about a birria burrito for $22 is different though. Birria is a super premium food that should be expensive, but burritos and Mexican food in general are seen as cheap crap food in the US. So that one is more about racism than actual value judgment.

Chapter 12 pre-rendered scene is badass. I feel like this is the first AAA game in a very long time that has that old school fantastical pre-rendered effect. Ever since PS3 era they have tried to match the realtime graphics closely to trick you into thinking it's in-game, but that really limits what you can do.

The time/opportunity cost of a disappointing meal is the worst part really. The high price just adds insult to injury. In DC new places would open up all the time with great reviews and word of mouth and prob 2/3rd of the time they were really meh. Can't really get that time & excitement back.

It's undeniable that price factors into overall enjoyment though. Your lizard brain is always thinking about it. But the way I see it is, if it's a rare occasion, then it doesn't really matter whether it's $100 or $200 in the grand scheme. But if it's a regular spot, then the difference really adds up. I have a cheap local place that I've gone to prob 300 times in my life. If their prices were just 50c higher, that would cost me as much as an entire $150 tasting menu. I know some people are regulars at expensive restaurants but I doubt that's any of us.

I'm pretty firm in my belief that if you go past maybe $80 for a single person's meal (including drinks), you're purely paying for prestige/atmosphere/other things unrelated to the dish itself. Some of the most delicious and life-changing food I've ever eaten was barely more than what fast food costs these days.
That's way too low. Tasting menus start at like $100.

Some of my fav food ever is in the $10 range, but there's a lot of great stuff at the top end too.

Also I've been in the restaurant business for almost 15 years and I understand what actually goes into food cost, beverage cost, and labor. Anyone currently serving a cocktail for over 18ish is clearly either ripping you off or using stuff that should be just drank neat and charging you out the ass to say you had an old fashioned with some very rare whistle pig.
I did have a nice $20 old fashioned once with a smokey mushroom extract, and they showed me the infusion and explained how they made it. Then I easily recreated it at home. That kind of education is worth it, but it's rare.

Hard to say. I've spent $350 on a meal but it was about $9/course. Another tasting menu I did was about $25/course. I would definitely do those again, and probably go up to like $50/course for the right restaurant. I can't imagine what single dish I would order that would be more than $50 though, unless it had caviar or truffles on it, which I don't really care about.

I've probably had a $25 cocktail before, but that is super painful and I would not willingly do it.

Oh I did order a $90 steak once, but it was on the company card and shared between like 7 people. Would never order it myself.

Even the niche reddit subs are ruined by the upvote system. It's such a bad system for actually running a community. It actively destroys conversation and incentivizes hivemind and interruption, even if there's only a handful of posts.

There's this phenomenon that I don't know what to call, where you'll have a "conversation" of 5-6 posts, where each post is from a different person. But each user speaks as if they were the previous poster, so it reads like a 1-on-1 conversation. It's a preview of our future AI-generated social structure, where individuality is completely forgotten. This is why it's ideal for bigotry-driven communities.

I don't know if that's "toxic" in the way most people use the term. But it definitely rots your brain. The positive is that it sorts information pretty well. But also like AI, there's a ton of hallucination which is optimized for sounding good rather than actually being true, so you can't trust anything there.

Chocobo gliding is fine, just boring.

They really shot themselves in a foot with a lot of these minigames though, by demanding near perfection for some of the rewards. The more skill you demand, the more players will hit the rough edges of the controls and mechanics and became more frustrated. Players intuitively know when the game design isn't good enough to justify the time and effort they are investing to build skill in it.

I know there's an actual soap gene. When the human genome is fully analyzed, they will have found thousands of genes that directly affect smell and taste of various foods. But cilantro is the only one that people defer fully to the gene.

By the way, all studies do conclude that the gene is only a small part of the overall psychology and (like with any food) repeated exposure can change your taste.

There's clearly a spectrum since some people say they taste ZERO soap, which is crazy. To me, there's no question that it tastes like soap.

I also know people who gag when eating fish sauce, pickles, or broccoli, all of which I love. What's so special about cilantro that it needs a gene to explain distaste? I even have heard of people disliking mint because it tastes soapy (as in a common aroma associated with soap)

Not a fan when going through the plot and you get a mediocre minigame stop starting and killing the pace as you need to figure out how it works. I went from hyped and looking forward to an expected encounter, to spending time on the phone looking up what I'm overlooking.
I had to force myself to move on trom Gongaga because knew this would happen. I thought the environment was great, the city and the story was really moving. And so figured I would try some side quests, just because liked the area and wanted to stay there longer. Then you hear Red say "I know we're on a mission but we just gotta help these chickens" and know it's gonna be a huge waste of time that will sour your memory.

It demands a lot from the player to be expert enough at game design meta to curate their own experience like that. But that's the nature of such a broad audience game.
