Actually great point. Maybe going back to actual RPG roots is what FF needs? Less epic linear anime storylines.

Also doesn't help that Persona has becomes THE game for an epic anime storyline. No one really looks at FF for that anymore.

For a narrative game it's all about the pathos of the story. God of War very smartly transitioned from edgy badass pathos to somber dad pathos, which was trendy at the time. And of course the marketing was flawless in explaining to people how different the game was and how "evolved" and "modern" and "grown up" it became. It really sold itself as a 2020s game.

XVI marketing seemed really weak in general. I don't know anything about the characters, conflict, overall pathos. It's GoT-ish, but after season 8? They forgot that no one actually cares about the political parts of GoT, only about the boobs and violence, and most importantly, the somber dad main character. Combat looked 10 years old too.

There's just no somber dads in FF. If Nier can change their whole game to add a somber dad, why can't FF? And now they missed the trend so they can't do it anymore. I guess there's the hunger games trend that they could try, or super hero stuff. Those would work well with the FF formula. Or try to go for a more cutting edge Gen Alpha trend. What would that be? Riverdale or Euphoria or something

I did the solo compo so I had to complete it by 9 yesterday.

But yeah for you, focus on getting something the tiniest bit playable, and then upload that. Theme doesn't matter at all, it's just a starting point. The stats are usually around 50% of games unsubmitted, so you'll automatically be in the top 50% if you submit.

I do wonder what % of players knew the twist going in. The current ending barely makes sense for those who know what's happening, with the way they cut around so frequently. If you didn't know the original story, it would make 0 sense.

They should've tried for a story that worked for noobs and extended a carrot for veterans. But they just shut out the noobs completely.

And yeah the story doesn't actually matter at all. Most players probably won't get past Junon here anyway.

Rebirth is the best reviewed game released so far this year!

Rebirth took 15 hours and stretched it into 120. Same ratio.

The difference is that the original obviously rushed through Midgar and it was straight up bad. Remake gave it the proper room to breathe and be enjoyable, plus an extra 30% ish of filler.

But it seems like Rebirth didn't actually have to fix anything. The original midgame was fine with good writing and had enough core and side content. So what is the 800% stretching for really?

All other issues aside, I think the way Remake and Rebirth have handled Sephiroth is extremely disappointing. I haven't seen a single new player have any investment in him as a villain whatsoever.

Mostly makes me appreciate how much 7 was a prototype for X's story

No it's not. It's a very tiny story (chase Sephiroth, then way later, get black materia) in a huge open game. Remake had a much more detailed story which is why it was able to spend so much time on its story. There's no juice to squeeze from Rebirth's story so all the time had to be minigames instead.

48 hour jam done. It's a rune drawing puzzle game. Very complex and brittle math here but it mostly works. 34 levels in total! Should work on desktop of mobile using mouse or touch.

That doesn't make sense considering you're still getting docs sent to you late Feb (which is very close to the LLC filing date) and your taxes get accepted within a couple hours even if you submit in the last week.

That already better than many LD games tbh

So much of the OST is scorey. They start up a memorable motif and you're like "hell yeah" and then 3 notes later they drop it and switch to something else. Constant blue balls.

I'm not really sure how good I'll do in the jam. I still hit a lot of friction with godot, and I'm spending time organizing my local jam too. My goal is to make it my best godot jam game by a significant margin.
