I just don't understand why you are always arguing about how horrible things are.
I'm not. in contexts like this, my interest is in accurately describing the way things are, not in arguing about whether anything is good or bad. I'm sorry if it seems to you as though I'm doing the latter, but I'd personally rather not delude myself into thinking things are different from how they are.

I know you are a good person, but you are always so intense. And I know the world sucks, but Iet's be happy for a win. This movie is a win, and I really hope it does well.
see, this is part of what I'm talking about. I'm attempting to describe the reality of the situation more accurately than this.

And I have searched for gay romcoms. They either aren't major theatrical releases or they aren't actually romcoms. I am happy to be proven wrong here. But this movie is the typical stupid "meet cute" stuff that has been polluting cinema since the early 90s (although a few are really good), but this happens to have two dudes. Plus, it actually looks funny.
that's also part of what I'm talking about. this isn't a win for gay acceptance; this is corporations marketing to gay people. it's safe. it's just rainbow capitalism.

there is a rich history of movies that represent anyone and everyone. big corporations are never the "first" to make movies that represent people, and the "by a major studio" stipulation seems to exist for no reason other than shutting down this sort of conversation

Also, why do you not care if it does well?
several reasons. mostly I just don't care how much money movies make in general. it's just going to line the pockets of some executive or another

It's circular. X causes Y causes X causes Y
this is a response to the last sentence there, but not the first. large corporations letting a few token members of a marginalized community into their club is very much not "how change happens"

I just don't understand why you make yourself miserable. Enjoy the small wins. This is a win. I hope it does well, but don't know yet. Clearly, I am on the same "side" as you.
I'm not making myself miserable. (though I also don't particularly care if it does well)

No one has named one yet
which still does not mean that none exist.

How? If there are any rom com elements, they are relegated to the young straight couple. The gay couple are the established parents meant to provide culture shock. BTW, I did see Birdcage when it was released in the theater and a couple times since.
okay, this is fair. it's been a while since I've seen it. (I also saw it in theatres, though not when it was initially released; and I have a copy of the script)

Rom coms, when done properly, get you to root for the characters to get together. There has never been one, as far as I know and no one here has given an example, that has been about rooting for two guys getting together.
have you tried googling "gay romcoms"?

Be happy about it.

Pretty much everyone involved is in the community. But they got a major studio to actually back it. This is how change happens, with normalizing it.
no, large corporations letting a few token members of a historically marginalized community make a movie is not "how change happens" lol. it's a result of change happening, not a catalyst

Can you ever just let something be positive?
I'm sorry that my pointing out the reality of the situation is uncomfortable for you, but I'm not going to stop

I can't think of one.
which does not mean that one doesn't exist

In & Out and Birdcage were mentioned, but they are straight up comedies, not rom coms,
how are you defining "romcom" here? I think Birdcage could qualify

and also primarly focused on straight people being uncomfortable with gay people. Bros is different.
of course it's different. all movies are different. I don't think a movie being "primarily focused on straight people being uncomfortable with gay people" should disqualify it from being a "gay romcom"

Speaking as someone actually with Asperger's, no thanks. People know what Asperger's is; I don't want to have to explain "ASD level-1" to them (and yes, the level-1 bit would be important to mention, as otherwise I would be roping myself along with those who have non-"high functioning" ASD)

Things shouldn't just be renamed only because the guy they're named after turned out to be a bit of a dick, or is someone you otherwise don't like, or whatever.
that is one of the reasons for renaming it, but it's not the only one. not even the biggest one.

"asperger's" is an autism-spectrum disorder. the only thing differentiating it from other autism-spectrum disorders was the extent to which their communication abilities were limited. in other words, it was defined by how easy it was for neurotypical people to understand the autistic person.

"high-functioning" and "low-functioning" are also kinda problematic in terminology, but they at least recognize that asperger's is part of the same broader condition

If it's just a retelling of the "original" where basically nothing changes, how can it be any better/worse than the original?
the actors can be better/worse for the role
the director can have better/worse ideas
the animation can be better/worse

to the third point specifically: CGI rarely looks good at all, and it will almost certainly look like shit in 10 years when the technology is better again; whereas stylized hand-drawn stuff from the 40s and 50s (or even earlier) still just looks like stylized hand-drawn cartoons
