Time machine joke was dead on. Its very easy in 2022 to pretend you would have bravely gone against the grain and recognized the bad stuff from generations past because youre such a moral exemplar, but realistically youre a product of your culture now and likely would have been back then too.
Everyone loved slavery, and they ended it because I guess they just got tired of it.

So the far-right was born that way? Does that mean I was born superior? At the very least, I guess this means I can't help that I'm "woke". Just a product of my environment.

And right now these people believe it's okay to, "kill babies." What are the people in the future going to think of them when the people in the future find out more about the nature and feelings of a fetus? "OMG, the people in the past used to cheer when they would get an abortion. How vile of them!"
I sure hope future people won't think women are worth less than dirt. That would probably mean people are in the post-apocalypse and starting humanity over from scratch. They'd progress back to logic and empathy eventually though.

they're fucking stupid and are proven wrong by the simple fact that those things went away because people that thought differently fought to get rid of the shitty historical norms

It depends on what values you have. Having the correct values and methods of deciding what is right and wrong can help you be ahead of your time. Truly proceeding from the assumption that all human beings are inherently equal regardless of arbitrary distinctions gets you 90 percent of the way there, and there have always been people who believed that.

How can you say that and expect to be taken seriously when we have no guarantee what the correct values and moral standards will be in 10 years, let alone in a 100 or 1,000? We cant even get all the nations of the world, literally today, to agree on what those values should be.

Put another way, do you honestly think your children or their children wont be able to find something to condemn you for, if theyre committed to blaming past generations for whatever theyre mad about decades from now?

there's a really strange kind of "progressivism" (I suppose I'll call it that for lack of a better term) that basically just assumes people in the past were horrific monsters, the farther in the past you go, the more horrific they were, and that people now are much "better" (however that's defined). it's... very much not true

That other example he gave, aeronauts, was a bit more on point

I have zero issue with a black king Lear or a black mermaid. It's fiction so who cares.

But apparently they just took a real historical event from 100 years ago and changed one dude to a woman for representation and still played it off as a true story? That one's a bit like weird imo

The "product of their time" argument is so intellectually lazy it baffles me that anyone would ever use it unironically.

Explicit counterculture movements have existed pretty much as long as there's been oppressive figures of authority. We wouldn't even be where we are right now if there wasn't a large chunk of the population saying to themselves "Wait...this isn't right". America itself is the product of people not just going with the flow of whatever society deemed "normal".

The issue has always been whether these movements had the political/economic power to enforce change.

Isnt science always changing? I figure things are discovered as we learn more. I feel treating our current scientific findings as concrete and factual is ironically anti-science.

What would you say to that observation?

As far as the time machine stuff, I think its okay to acknowledge that for the most part, people tend to align with the community they are around. People tend to follow the religion of their parents. Or on a smaller scale, people tend to bank where their parents bank.

Obviously individuals can deviate from the norms of an environment, but I wouldnt give folks flak if they dont is my stance.

We currently live in a world where persuasion isnt exactly being promoted instead of shutting down conversations. So I worry about those who cant deviate on their own changing.

All of cortex, all of the brain, contributes to "consciousness" (whatever you define that to be).

Further, in general, there's not really many periods of brain development that are both so stark and so low variance to justify a cut off like that. None really.

Historical erasure is definitely a thing. Pushing a narrative that people weren't opposed to X bad thing back in the day lets them in turn push the narrative that it wasn't actually that bad, and then they use that to defend the current bad thing. Example would be people acting like the BLM riots were unprecedented, even though these cranky ass boomers were plenty old enough to have lived through Rodney King.

Someone sounds mad that they would have been on the wrong side of history. Bill Maher will continue to not know you exist and continue to wrongfully be given TV deals and millions of dollars to spit out hot takes and shit on minorities for having a voice.

We need to abolish the 24 hours news cycle. Bill Maher just the boomer version of some braindead YouTube influencer. We can barely explain what these people do or why it needs to be done, but let's toss lots of money at them to do it! And yes, we can get rid of this on "ALL SIDES" and be better off for it.
