The "product of their time" argument is so intellectually lazy it baffles me that anyone would ever use it unironically. Explicit counterculture movements have existed pretty much as long as there's been oppressive figures of authority. We wouldn't even be where we are right now if there wasn't a large chunk of the population saying to themselves "Wait...this isn't right". America itself is the product of people not just going with the flow of whatever society deemed "normal".
