Spend as much time as you want with the cards, it should be easier to get a few of the other characters than Edea's but yeah follow a guide for QoC if you wanna do that.

Centra Ruins is the only non-card thing that would need to be done before progressing with the plot, but you can also attempt a few other GF quests right now that you can discover by flying around the map (they are available afterwards too though). They're generally straightforward but you might want tips on how to acquire Doomtrain. Have you been collecting any magazines btw?

If you want GF location hints, look for places you can access with Ragnarok that you couldn't with Garden. To be precise:

1. On a little island to the east of Centra.
2. A research centre located way in the middle of the ocean to the south-west of the map. Two GFs here, after you get one re-enter and go deeper to get another.
3. After you get Odin go back into Centra Ruins for another GF
4. The Occult Fan magazines give hints as to how to get a GF. Tears' Point in Esthar is where you get a crucial item for this one.

You've finished the Card Club quest, the Queen of Cards is a different person with her own questline. (They went hard on the cards in this game!) I think she'll be in Balamb Town if you haven't met her already. She controls the rules and some rare cards can only be gotten through advancing her quest, but as said earlier it's pretty convoluted and annoying.

Irvine's is tied to the annoying Queen of Cards sidequest (as is Kiros), the others are all acquirable normally. Idk if you want the answers but I'll say you're thinking along the right lines at least.

It's weird that they didn't give Cid Edea's card, it would've made more sense than what they actually did.

And yeah after you beat the CC Queen to trigger the final part of the quest you have to soeak to Dr. Kadowaki and rest, then there's a random chance of the next step triggering in the dorm. I'm using the wiki for this as I didn't remember myself and can't find my old Prima guide.

There's also a separate Queen of Cards quest but that one is way more annoying and fiddly and involves intentionally losing cards to gain others, you might be better off using a guide (or Leon) for that, I never bothered with it at all.

They're all in Balamb Garden for that quest, you have to do them in order so it might be someone you already tried.

Next player is in the main hall by the info board, you have to wait for them to get into position.

There's also a player you can challenge anytime in the training center.
..
But if you're getting into TT there's people all around the world with good cards, generally NPCs with a connection to major characters hold that character's card, it's worth wandering around after the Balamb stuff if you're enjoying it.

I think you get a few free GF cards from fights so yeah he should have no trouble winning rounds in the Garden if there's no weird rules on.

Edit: Yep he should have Ifrit, Sacred, Minotaur, Diablos and Cerberus unless he's refined them, and there's a few other free ones Seabass if you want to do some other sidequests first (like the Centra ruins).

Loved reading your space takes, and pretty much agree with all of it. It's a very clunky and underexplained setup just to get you out there, but man once you're there there's some really great stuff going on. Also space is just cool. It's why I understand but can never agree with the people who think the game drops off a cliff after disc 2. The propagator puzzle stuff is great too.

Also love love love the Eyes on Me scene, if any one non-CG scene deserves to be remembered from this game it's that one. I can put up with any number of cringey moments if you have stuff like that going on. I don't think the series has ever used body language as well as 8 does.

Yeah it's definitely been the Squall/Rinoa show for a while, and they definitely go to the damsel well a couple too many times for her.

I remember getting annoyed at that one, I think it was hard to tell if you're doing the right thing and the game just straight up doesn't tell you how to do it properly. Press boost like the whole time iirc.

Finally caught up with your playthrough, it's fun reading your thoughts on this ridiculous cool game.

A lot of people love the first two discs but hate everything after Ultimecia gets introduced, I think there's a lot of good stuff afterwards though. Esthar looks cool but is easy to get lost in, a common theme in this game. Don't worry too much about keeping levels low, I played through this game as a kid knowing nothing about that and barely understanding the junction system and got through it OK, just play however feels most fun for you. I agree with you that the world map theme isn't great either, I love so much of the OST in this game but that one is a miss for me.

Btw you don't have to worry about drawing GFs from story bosses after Alexander. And I may have missed this but did he get Odin?

The ME3 ending was destined to be hated after they went on and on about how important your choices were leading up to the game's release. Personally the worst part of it is how inconsequential your squad feels at the end and how you have to do the last bit solo, the last 10 minutes really didn't feel very 'Mass Effect' to me. Between that, Illusive Man's ending just being identical to Saren's, the lack of any Harbinger dialogue and the colour coded relays it's a very weak conclusion to three games worth of story imo.

Talking about the game as a whole, there were a few clumsy ways to shut off questlines that didn't seem to make sense to me (the Quarian/Geth conflict seemed really forced, why would it come to a head at that particular moment in time), and I hated how underused the ME2 cast were for the most part. Still a good game but the rushed development time and impossible-to-reach expectations doomed it in regards to being a satisfying ending.

Wonderful game, GOTY 2019 for me. Somehow the solar system manages to feel vast and isolated while also intimate and connected at the same time. The only collectible being knowledge is so cool, exploration felt so rewarding. Never played anything like it before.

Pretty excellent. Perfect conclusion to the Fey arc while giving pretty much everyone something to do, packed full of references to the other games but not in an annoying 'remember this?' kind of way normally, and some cool twists on the existing formula to keep things fresh. 3-5 is of course great but 3-1 and 3-4 lay the necessary groundwork to make it all feel like a true finale in the end- Godot and Dahlia were both great new characters that fit in the world seamlessly, and making Mia playable was such a great decision that gave her some much needed characterisation. Ignoring what comes afterwards Nick really gets a decent conclusion to his story here too, 4/4 for sure.

I'm hearing everything I had hoped to hear about SoJ, recapturing the magic of the original trilogy is exactly what I was wanting to happen. I'm surprised that it's in (an admittedly very distant) second place right now, I'll definitely pick it up when it's next on sale. Thanks for all the responses about that!

Oh right, I should add that I haven't played the DLC case for DD, I didn't know it was held in high regard.

No surprise that T&T is winning handily but I'm glad a lot of people seem to rate SoJ highly! I'll most likely pick it up now. DD was definitely pretty consistent and I totally get that they had a lot of work to do after AJ, it was just missing a truly great case that ties the whole game together like the first three had imo. But maybe the DLC will help with that.

3>1>2>5 for me, though 2-4 is my fav case of all. It's a real shame AAI2 wasn't localised, seeing as AAI1 seems to be right at the bottom with AJ on everybody's list.

I played the original three games forever ago after seeing this board hype up the series and really liked them, but I didn't bother with Apollo Justice as everyone seemed to dislike it. More recently I picked up Dual Destinies and was a bit disappointed, the game was perfectly fine but no case hit the highs that the original trilogy hit for me and I was left a bit cold by the end of the final case. I'm wondering if it's the general consensus that the series has lost a step post-T&T. Metacritic has remarkably consistent reviews across the board but I'm curious what you folks think. Is Spirit of Justice at a similar level to DD?
