If anyone has any suggestions for changes to challenges or other ideas, feel free to share!
I'll throw a few suggestions down since you asked, but no worries if none are taken aboard.

For genres, maybe turn Sports into Sports/Racing? They often go together as game genres and sports seems pretty limited as is. And maybe consider adding a Visual Novel, Simulation/Management or Survival category or something to keep things fresh? This might just be my own biases talking and I should branch out more!

Some of the themes feel kinda similar to each other too imo, like there's a ton of overlap between horror+supernatural. If you combined them you could fit another theme in, no idea what though. And for demographics, I think an LGBTQ+ lead challenge could be good, but I guess that might be too narrow a category? IDK. Maybe one for a lead with physical or mental health issues too, given the 'demographics' name of the section.

37. Beat a game you'd dropped or had a long hold on
Scribblenauts

I must've played this for a little bit way back when I got it then just put it down and forgotten all about it. I got the urge to give it another go after seeing an amusing speedrun of Super Scribblenauts. It's alright, despite the terrible controls. The amount of times Maxwell walked off a cliff because the camera started to pan just as I was about to tap an object... maddening. The music is great though, I didn't remember that at all.

40. Beat a game with a Metascore below 70
Recompile (moved Digimon)

I had fun with this, though I understand the scores. The aesthetics are great (though the lighting can sometimes make things a bit hard to see), the sound is good, and I like the text logs (though I think the ending doesn't satisfyingly bring it all together). The gameplay is pretty messy at times though, the combat is really basic and once you learn the Underclock skill the game is entirely trivial. The platforming is mixed but generally ok, and the level design isn't massively inspired.

I really like how different they make the areas look with each one having a colour+shape theme, and Hyperdrive (which should be the name of the game imo) is a great character. Def worth a look if you're into this kinda thing, it's pretty short and is on Game Pass.

19. Beat a platformer
Omno. Pretty fun light quick game, had a nice ending. Had to move some things around to fit it in.

26. Beat a game with revenge as a central theme
12 Minutes. Maybe this isn't the best spot for it but it still fits!

16. Beat a rhythm game
Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2

Sure enough, this was pretty much the exact same as EBA! Great fun, even though I spent far too long doing the final level on cheerleader difficulty. Lots of great stages (Bang Bang, the werewolf one, haircut wars), but my personal fav is probs the third unlockable stage (the xmas one). No idea why they hid such a great stage away but it was a delightful surprise!

39. Finish a game that took you at least twenty-five hours to beat
Okami

Been meaning to play this one for so long, and thankfully it lived up to my expectations. What a great game! It's a shame they haven't done more with the franchise (I will look into Okamiden), but man I had a great time with this. There's couple of things they could iron out- I played the Wii version so the motion controls were a bit off sometimes- but I would say this might be better than any Zelda from around this period.

3. Beat a game released between 2001-2010???
Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors

Not sure where to put this, the spreadsheet splits the decades into different years than the first post does. And it came out in Japan in 09 but the west in 10.

32. Beat a game with a non-white lead
Slime Rancher

Fun game, even if it's a little rough around the edges and the platforming isn't great. Didn't feel super polished. I was disappointed how little there was to find by exploring the pretty simple environments with the jetpack. And the framerate collapses when you have a lot of slimes on screen. Fun ranching times though! Except for the Boom Slimes, they just never behaved for me.

25. Beat a game with horror as a central theme
The Evil Within

A reviewer I follow is a massive fan of The Evil Within 2, so I thought I'd try the original. I was pretty disappointed, sadly. The writing was pretty bad, interesting setups here and there but there's no good payoff and nothing comes together. Like all the stuff we learn about the main character just... doesn't even matter, he's pretty unimportant to the actual plot. Maybe I was expecting too much. The characters are pretty bland overall, there's some cool atmosphere in spots but the game never takes advantage of its strengths. By the last act the game completely abandons any concept of horror and fully becomes a generic zombie shooter that feels like it's from the mid '00s rather than 2014.

It's not a bad game or anything, I guess I just expected more. Probably won't bother with the sequel. A shame!

Subnautica. Had great fun with it, though I think it loses some of the atmosphere later on when you get the vehicle depth modules and enemies aren't terrifying anymore. Also it's pretty buggy. Nier Automata

Rolled credits on this weeks ago, but 'beat' the proper ending yesterday. I have many thoughts on this game. I'm gonna need to sit on it for a while to really digest the deeper meanings, but man this was a very good experience. Don't want to say any more in case I'm not in fact the last person around here to play it, I went into this knowing next to nothing and enjoyed the game all the more because of that. Please try this if you have any interest in well-written sci-fi action/adventure games with bits of philosophy and incredibly creative narrative design!

27. Beat a game with mystery as a central theme
Last Window: The Secret of Cape West

I had a good time with this. It basically feels like a second go around at Hotel Dusk, with tighter gameplay and less empty filler. I like the characters (even if a couple seem like retreads of those in the original game), I like how subtly the emotional beats are usually played and how the game doesn't revel in its melodrama, and I like how many little character touches there are here and there that add depth to everyone. It's flawed for sure but it's just a cosy world to be in, even with the subject matter.

I'm sad Cing went under right after this, I haven't played anything else that has the same kind of vibe as these games (I like Ace Attorney a lot but in a different way, these scratch another itch). Also the 2D art was great (the 3D not so much, but it was the DS!). I wonder what the devs from these games are doing now.

Hard to comment on 2020 with it being so recent, but I wonder how well the results will age. I guess FF7R's rep could rise or fall depending on the sequels, and Hades is probably set as a good winner. Thanks for doing these rankings Zero, they were very fun to read!

Can't wait for FFVI to lose in double overtime to Super Metroid in the '94 final. I'm a fan of that series and now I'm actively rooting for it to always lose at the final hurdle.

19. Beat a platformer
New Super Lucky's Tale- exactly what I was after, a light fun platformer hearkening back to the PS1 era. Lots of the dialogue was pretty good but Lucky himself annoyed me.

24. Beat a game with romance as a central theme

Haven't played it but I think it's more of a detective thing than typical anime fare. I do love RE2make though, and surprised it lost. But this board does love visual novels.

Looking at all of it together like that, 2019 was a really solid year. I haven't even played the two in the final (will do sometime!) but there's a bunch of great games there that didn't even get out of round 1 and I'm not even mad at it looking at what beat them.

On the one hand, that year looks pretty boring. On the other, that means you nailed the seeding!

Crosscode deserved better than a 16 seed, but I guess it falls into that 'indies that release on PC but don't get more attention until they come on consoles years later' category. At least Celeste looked good.

Cool list! I like getting back to Lost discussions every now and then, even if my opinion on parts of the show has soured.

Sawyer was my fav from the start, and at some point along the way I realised I liked Desmond even more. They're both really really good characters though who actually have a consistent progression from season to season. I'll admit I didn't think S6 Sawyer was him at his best (1, 3, 5 were his best years imo) but he wasn't ruined like most of the others, and Desmond just never missed a beat. Of course Desmond is helped by his strong ties to the overall plot, but even when the mystery stuff got super messy his episodes kept that emotional connection around to keep you invested. And they both had great relationships with the rest of the cast.

Forgot how weird a year 2012 was, not a bad gaming year like many say but the big AAA ones were just... eh, not a BL guy myself. If Walking Dead had managed to pull off the Xenoblade upset this would've been a horribly aged final. I think Zero Escape probably gets out of its division these days.

Worst results: Spec Ops losing to Theatrhythm and Kid Icarus getting wiped by TWDG.

As for 2013, I think Bioshock does much worse these days and poor Pikmin 3 would get more of a shot than losing 8-3 in round 1, but aside from that I think the results would be pretty similar. Very curious how Link Between Worlds v FE Awakening would go today.

I think Portal 2 would still do well (though Pokemon B/W would probably put up much more of a fight), Uncharted is the one I can't see getting past the semis these days. And I have no idea who would get out of the Skyward Sword/Mario 3D Land/Dark Souls/Skyrim quadrant. Sonic Generations and Deus Ex might have something to say even!

Arkham City v Ghost Trick being so close back then is cool, I guess B8 had already taken to Ace Attorney stuff by this point.

See this is why the 'year of' tournaments seem more fun to look at than the retroactive ones. Seeing what people thought at the time and how they get caught up in hype that died down so hard in future years, seeing the cult hits that had yet to pop, it's great. Like does anybody talk about DKCR these days? Yet it walked to the semis, its only challenge being Heavy Rain of all things.

That said, the final is still probably the same two today. Could see it going either way. I never realised how weird 2010 was outside of those two though- so many divisive games, disappointments, and great games that flew under the radar at release.

20. Beat an action game
Dead Cells

Only the first boss cell, not the whole thing, but credits rolled so I'm counting it as beaten. I liked it a lot but don't know if I can be bothered running through it however many times on harder difficulties if it's just the same levels again but with harder enemies.

12. Beat a game made by a developer you've never tried
Katana Zero

V cool game, entirely unlike what I was expecting. Great writing and setting. Needs a sequel. Honestly I was tempted to count this as a puzzle game given the nature of the gameplay, but it's classed as an action-platformer so I won't bother. And it doesn't feel like a proper platformer so I'm not putting it there.

Aw but the fan speculation was half the fun! Lost really pioneered that kind of TV genre, trying to figure things out and working up theories (and memes) with the community was great, no matter how it ended up.

Although the Stranger in a Strange Land promo is still ridiculous. What even were the other two mysteries 'revealed', did we ever find out definitively?

RE5 is a good game! It's definitely a better division winner there than NSMB Wii would've been. And how the heck did Prof Layton do so well? Didn't think it was that great.

After further thinking over the past few years' worth of tournaments, I can confirm there's only one other year where a Final Four doesn't have any games exclusive to a Nintendo system. It'll get brought up when I get to said year.
Looking at the GFAX GOTYs, gonna guess... 2015. Unless Mario Maker had a good run.

I'm enjoying these write-ups! It really is hilarious how FF continually dominates everything until the final. Sonic Adventure 2 got unlucky with bracket placement :( Silent Hill 2 deserved its deep run though.

A shame that neither Shenmue game got out of Round 1, too. And really odd that Spyro 3 went out in round 1 (albeit narrowly) given Spyro 2's run.
