Do recall what the term actually means. Of COURSE they exist.

Depends how pedantically you interpret "unidentified." Any flying object related to a conscious entity is going to be identifiable by that entity, even if all of the human observers we have access to are unable to identify it, and that would actually include anything piloted by some manner of alien (since the alien knows what it is). As such, the only truly unidentified flying objects that really can exist are those that are completely inanimate and are flying purely due to natural physical phenomena, such as comets or meteorological oddities, and the list of such things that haven't been identified is dwindling pretty rapidly as our understanding of the world around us grows.

I like how less shoppers leads to less inventory somehow.

Their inventory of used games comes from shoppers, so yeah. It seems counterintuitive, but it does actually make sense to some degree. That said, the lack of people buying games at all - used or otherwise - does make me question why they'd want to throw more money than usual at getting more games to sell.

I suppose, if they're anticipating going out of business, an inventory of games is still going to be worth more than even these elevated trade-in values would be if they just held on to their money, so maybe that's it. Worst case scenario, that allows corporate to make a quick buck by reselling everything on ebay for more than they paid to get them, and having fewer liquid assets could be helpful when bankruptcy is declared.

Games do still get actual reviews. Nothing's really changed on that front, except maybe some tweaking of what the numbers mean. If you want to know more about what to expect from a given game, you absolutely still have the option to seek out reviews for it.

I couldn't tell you what the first one was, but the game that definitely comes immediately to mind whenever this poll comes up is Spec Ops: The Line. In particular, there was one point where I was mid-firefight, and a civilian popped out from behind some cover and tried to run past me to safety. I shot her because I was pretty much shooting everything and didn't take the time to consider whether or not I needed to do it then. The game didn't penalize me for it, or even make any mention of what I'd done, but it left me with the memory of my own personal tiny war crime to haunt me. Felt bad, man.

It makes sense *before* a game comes out -- since people will have limited ability to play -- but not once it comes out.

Eh, that's debatable. The vast majority of players won't put enough time into a game before the 3-day mark to be able to give a properly informed review (especially in today's world of frequently having to spend several hours downloading a patch before playing), meaning any reviews that could get posted right away aren't likely to be overly representative of the average gamer's experience and therefore aren't particularly informative. 3 days is a reasonable window to make sure that everyone leaving a review has at least had the opportunity to give the game a fair try (regardless of whether or not they've taken that opportunity), cutting down on the number of reviews that are knee-jerk reactions or based on extreme binge sessions.

It won't stop review bombing altogether, but it does at least help make sure that review bombing gets diluted by legitimate reviews and is less likely to impact launch window sales.

Zeus posted...
At that point, it feels more like they're doing it just to appease advertisers who want more people to buy their terrible games.

Yes and no. This is inevitably going to work to the advantage of publishers putting out games that will legitimately end up with poor user scores, given that those user scores won't appear until later in the launch window. Given how front-loaded game sales are, that's going to be a pretty big deal for them. On the flip side, though, it does prevent people putting out good games that have incited a review bomb for some reason from having their launch window sales hurt by that bomb. Personally, I'm inclined to say that that benefit outweighs the drawback, particularly considering that any publisher that makes a habit of releasing terrible games is going to be encouraging their would-be user base to wait for user reviews before making a purchase, meaning they won't get away with it for very long.

Hellblade was very pointedly not a AAA game, actually. It can be considered a pioneer of a sort of "AA industry" in that it was made by a smaller team and on a lower budget, free from corporate and shareholder pressures, but still had a larger budget than most indie games and aimed to produce something comparable to AAA stuff. It's not quite right to call it an independent game, but it's also not right to call it AAA.

Jokes aside, it is crappy that companies seem to be shifting towards making it difficult to change anything in an electronic. Has there ever been a good reason behind it or did we just buy into it not caring?

A part of it is the drive toward smaller form factors, at least when dealing with laptops and the like. It's generally a lot easier to shrink a device down when you can really cram stuff in there than when you have to worry about making it accessible for people that want to change it out. People not caring is the primary reason, though. Even when repairing electronics is an option, most consumers don't bother, so companies taking that ability away isn't a problem for most people. It ties in with the general trend toward companies trying to have greater control over their products after selling them by limiting users' and third parties' abilities to service the devices, forcing them to either pay for first-party repairs or just buy a new one.

It really is rather annoying how difficult it is to swap out components in modern laptops. It wasn't that long ago that laptops would have small panels on the bottom you could remove to replace the hard drive, RAM, and sometimes other things, and batteries just came right out by releasing a couple latches. Replacing the hard drive in my current laptop, though, required me to dismantle the whole thing, and I imagine the battery would have been a similar ordeal.

Mental illness is common in most communities. Artistic communities just tend to be more open about expressing and discussing it, which is why so many pieces of art in so many different media are about mental illness in some capacity (whether explicitly intentionally or just in the artist's mental illnesses coming through in the work). Games in particular are an attractive medium for that because their interactivity makes them very effective for helping the player understand the experience of the illnesses they portray, or to give them the opportunity to interact with a mentally ill character in a relatively safe environment (namely in that they won't drive an actual person to suicide if they screw up the interaction).

8, if we count brief stopovers. In rough order of time spent:

-Born and raised in Nova Scotia (29 years), will be moving back there in a couple weeks
-Currently living in Ontario (2 years), plus the occasional vacation before then (1-2 months total)
-Occasional family vacations in New Brunswick (maybe 3-4 months total)
-Occasional family vacations in PEI (1-2 months total)
-Occasional family vacations to Quebec (mostly Montreal) (1-2 months total)
-Visited Newfoundland as part of a road trip a few years ago (1 week)
-Visited a friend in BC a couple years ago (1 week)
-Spent ~4-5 hours in the Calgary airport on my way back from BC

7 would probably be the more reasonable figure to give, since I didn't do much of anything in Alberta, but I think that's the full list. Never been to Saskatchewan or Manitoba, nor any of the territories. Also not Labrador, but that's formally lumped in with Newfoundland.

ScritchOwl posted...
honestly I doubt the proper mask wearers would get the corona virus

Masks aren't great at preventing infection, primarily because the eyes are a major route for respiratory tract infections (this is true of colds, influenza, and any other common illness, not just Covid). The tear ducts are a nice, moist direct line to the nasal passages, and bacteria and viruses love that. Masks keep the nose and mouth safe, but do nothing to protect the eyes, so while they're better than nothing, they're too unreliable to be the only protective measure at play.

In contrast, masks are great at preventing people who are already infected from transmitting it to others. That happens almost purely via the nose and mouth (I would expect tears to also be infectious, but tears don't spread easily enough to really matter), so if you cover them up, you get a degree of protection equivalent to the effectiveness of that covering (well short of 100% in the case of non-sealing cloth masks, but still a lot better than people give them credit for). People can't rely on wearing a mask themselves to be safe from infection, but they can rely on infected people wearing masks to provide that safety. Where a- and pre-symptomatic transmission is such a big problem with this virus, the best course of action is therefore for everyone to wear a mask regardless of whether or not they're symptomatic, since it's all but impossible for anyone to know for certain that they aren't infectious.

As an added bonus, if both the infectious person and the healthy person are wearing a mask, those layers of protection do stack and reduce the transmission rate far below what you'd see with just one person wearing it. Even more reason to have as many people as possible wearing them. It's just the safest option for everyone involved.

We mostly used my WiiU for Netflix, but with how unreliable that app is these days (it has a bad habit of freezing and/or becoming unresponsive after playing for any decent length of time), plus the fact that my gamepad's battery is toast and that's the only way to control it, we've tended toward hooking up a laptop instead. That's really not ideal, and I'd much rather have one of the game systems that's consistently connected and set up near the TV do the job. Presuming the hypothetical app was designed semi-competently, the Switch would be pretty much perfect for it, to say nothing of the potential portability.

It's not the end of the world that the Switch doesn't have Netflix, no, but it would be helpful if it did, and the fact that it doesn't even now that it's cemented itself a a success (I understood Netflix being wary about putting in the effort to develop an app before it had proven itself) means it's kind of baffling there still isn't one.
