For me, it had to be the first time I joined the Thieves' Guild and Dark Brotherhood in Elder Scrolls: Oblivion (my first TES game.)

I couldn't tell you what the first one was, but the game that definitely comes immediately to mind whenever this poll comes up is Spec Ops: The Line. In particular, there was one point where I was mid-firefight, and a civilian popped out from behind some cover and tried to run past me to safety. I shot her because I was pretty much shooting everything and didn't take the time to consider whether or not I needed to do it then. The game didn't penalize me for it, or even make any mention of what I'd done, but it left me with the memory of my own personal tiny war crime to haunt me. Felt bad, man.

Probably the opening sequences to FFIV (through to Mist). Committing crimes against humanity is not a good feeling, tbh.

I think letting Alistair get executed in a second playthrough of Dragon Age: Origins.

I've been killing civilians since the original Baldur's Gate and I had some like 3000+ innocent kills in my main Fable 2 save.

It takes quite a bit and tends to do moreso with betrayal of characters I actually like to actually get me to feel any kind of remorseful.

It's probably not the first one, but the earliest I remember is God of War 1, pushing the dude in the cage up the ramp to place him as a sacrifice to the flames so I could proceed, with him begging and pleading with me the whole way.

I didn't like that at all, and it made me hate Kratos. Then he does a bunch more evil shit in GoW 2, and GoW 3 opens up w/ him storming Olympus and probably dooming humanity, and I just turned the game off and never went back to it. I can't play games where I don't want my character to succeed. It had reached a point where it was more satisfying to watch him die.

Probably stealing from the shop in Link's Awakening (original Game Boy version). Being called THIEF and not being allowed to go inside that shop ever again for the rest of the game went against my grain big time.

Yeah, I disliked the GoW series due to how much of a douche Kratos was, but Santa Monica did a great job with the new game.

I think the first time something like that really hit me was the first time I killed a dragon in Warcraft 2 (PS1). After spending a minute digesting this strange new sensation of feeling rotten for killing something in a video game, I concluded (correctly) that I'd enjoy the game more playing on the horde side.

Guilt? Please. I spent a sizable chunk of time deliberately resetting just to go through all of his dialogue and laugh at it. Of course, that meant I just got annoyed whenever I accidentally turned off the game without saving (e.g. power outage) and had to sit through his lecture again, so maybe that wasn't a great idea >.>
