Caught a late show of Aquaman last night and...I liked it. It's dumb on a "Deus ex machina/chain of unbelievable coincidences" level if you think about it too hard, but it was entertaining all around.

Not a bad DC superhero movie by any means, but Cinema Sins is eventually going to have a field day with it is all I'm saying.

The best arcs for the character, if you ask me, are the ones where the writer keeps the reader guessing as to whether or not the Moon Knight has these powers ... or if he is imagining all of it. Does he have a voice in his head ... or is he hallucinating? Pretty cool stuff.

My problem with that is that some of the first Moon Knight stuff I ever read was when he was part of the West Coast Avengers, when they literally time traveled back to ancient Egypt, and it was pretty clearly established straight up that Khonshu is 112% real and absolutely chose Marc Spector as his anointed avatar and champion. Up to and including literally possessing him in a couple of issues and using him like a meat puppet.

So when you read a story later that is being more ambiguous about it, it's hard to buy into the ambiguity when my brain is going "No, there's no ambiguity, he is absolutely blessed by an Egyptian god who has given him magical powers. We have already established this."

That being said, Marc Spector IS crazy - that's something else that's 100% established. So the real ambiguity comes from the line between drawn where the magic stops and the crazy starts. If Marc hears Khonshu speaking to him in his head, is it REALLY Khonshu? Because it totally might be. Or it might be the crazy talking.

Where's Jamie Braddock when you need him to sort out who's batshit crazy and who isn't?

...what is so bad about it really? It's already a more or less absurd premise to begin with, and I'm not the least bit surprised that this has a Blade/LxG/Preacher vibe to it.

I love Sandman, but after seeing what was done to Lucifer, I have no illusions about the sacrifices I'd have to endure to ever see it get out of development hell.

Imagine Batman getting a Netflix treatment.

I like the way Peterson writes, but the book is mostly repackaged, standard self help type stuff with his spin on it. I don't understand why he has the Trigglypuffs so riled up.

Zeus, I don't think you grasp the magnitude of what Carlin did for the art form as a whole. If all you're familiar with is Life is Worth Losing or It's Bad For Ya, I can see where you get that impression, as I said earlier he kind of became cranky towards the end. I blame sobriety turning him into a dry drunk.

The sheer volume of his material over the span of his career, and the way he retired his old act as he went was unprecedented at the time.

The modern standup scene would look nothing like it does now were it not for him. Comics would still be milking the same bit for 20 years if he hadn't forced working comics to step up their game.

You may not like his acts, but to dismiss him entirely as "having all the insight of an angsty teen" is demonstrably false and downright laughable if you have any insight into stand-up comedy.

Which sounds wholly divorced from my criticism concerning the quality of his insights. My original remark and your argument are in no way mutually exclusive. All that aside, you seem to be crediting far too much to Carlin considering that things like tv, etc, also killed comedians who might try to just milk the same bit.

Tell that to Kinnison or Lampinelli.

Raoul Duke: I feel a bit lightheaded. Maybe you should drive.
Narrator: Suddenly, there was a terrible roar all around us, and the sky was full with what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, and a voice was screaming:
Narrator and Raoul Duke (simultaneously): Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?!
Dr. Gonzo: Did you say something?
Raoul Duke: Hm? Never mind. It's your turn to drive.
Narrator: No point in mentioning these bats, I thought. Poor bastard will see them soon enough.

...

And, honestly, unless enough taxpayers move out of CT and the state collapses under the weight of its immense fiscal irresponsibility, individuals won't make much of a difference.

Just saying Zeus, CT isn't far from that point already. Case in point, when I moved out of CT back in 2011, Stamford had a population of over 350k. Now the number is something like 85k. There's so many great comics that I haven't even touched on here.

Just to throw a wild card out there, as much as most female comics don't do much for me, I think a lot of people are sleeping on Iliza Shlesinger. I might be biased because I hit on her at a party years ago in New Canaan back when she was calling herself Lizzy when she thought she was Courtney Love in the late 90s...but she's hot AF and she's actually funny without every joke she does being about her vag.

As to Burr, he's at his best when he's just riffing on some dipshit that asks him a stupid question, but that's a common trait in most of the Boston comics.

Incorrect. Carlin was one of the greatest social commentators of all time.

Also this.

Now granted, towards the end Carlin kind of became a cranky, bitter old prick...which was his right at that point in his life and what was happening in the world at the time.

That being said, what a lot of Carlin's detractors seem to miss is that the man wrote a new hour every year for damned near 40 years. If you understand anything about standup, you know what a crazy idea it was when he started doing it.

He came from an era where a working standup comic could still literally milk the same hour of material in Vegas for 20 years. He was really the first comic that would do a special and straight up burn the entire act and start from scratch as soon as it was recorded because it wasn't fresh anymore. I love Kinnison, but if he were still alive he'd still be shouting OH OH OH. GO WHERE THERE'S FOOD! Dice still tours and gets stuck doing Hickory Dickory Dock as an encore. If Hedbergh was still alive he'd still be feeding ducks with Subway bread as an encore. Hell, even Bert Kreischer can't leave a theater without people begging him to do The Machine.

If an audience had begged Carlin to do 7 dirty words in 87 as an encore, he would have flipped them the bird and walked off stage. Once his act was recorded, it was sour milk to him and he was on to the next hour.

Without a guy like Carlin, comics could still afford to be complacent and lazy. You'd never have guys like Hicks or Stanhope or Ralphie May if it weren't for guys like him. Gabriel Iglesias would still be doing his fluffy bit. Dunham would still have one puppet. White would still be doing Tater Salad. Foxworthy and the rest of the redneck crew would still be milking their punchlines. Kat Williams would still be doing White People...Demitri Martin wouldn't have to rip pages off his sketch pad as he goes.

The modern art of standup owes in particular Carlin, Lenny Bruce, and Hicks an eternal debt of gratitude that any comic worth a damn would acknowledge.

Just my two cents. Change My Mind.

. And he's in a universe were it would be pathetically easy for him to acquire tech that can subdue or stun rather than kill. Hell, he could probably straight up ask Spider-Man to use his connections to get someone like Tony Stark or Reed Richards to build him stuff like that if he was interested in taking prisoners.

Frank doesn't kill because he needs to kill. He kills because he wants to kill. Because, much like with Batman, every single criminal he deals with is just revenge for the one crime he couldn't prevent. He's basically a broken man who can't cope with his grief venting his frustrations against the world - and the only reason he isn't the subject of a massive manhunt is because there are just enough police and officials (and citizens) in the incredibly corrupt Marvel universe who agree with his methods that no one really goes looking for him as long as he just sticks to killing street criminals.

I certainly can't argue with that logic since Parker could have given him a "web fluid shotgun" and a warehouse full of web cartridges 30 years ago. I hear now in modern continuity that Castle actually has the War Machine suit...like seriously, wtf? Who made that call? We also apparently have Venom: Agent of SHIELD so I'm honestly at a loss as to why they don't just get it over with and let Carnage take Castle as a host at this point.

Yeah, Mauschwitz doesn't do grey areas, and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone that can say Frank Castle isn't a prolific serial killer, even if the people he does kill are shitstain blights on humanity 99% of the time. Just about anyone else in the Marvel stable with his body count is deep, so very deep into the villain category.

Apparently Wolverine's overall kill count is even higher, but a large chunk of those happened while he was brainwashed.

Perhaps, but Logan doesn't wake up in the morning with a hard on with a cheeseburger at the end of it at the thought of killing mere humans. I'm not saying Wolverine is a saint or anything, but as a mutant he can afford to practically ignore most mooks as he goes. I'm sure Logan's.kills are disproportionately worse and more powerful mutants as a matter of necessity.

Castle on the other hand as a more or less vanilla human with training has to put two in the chest and one in the head of literally every low level thug that stands in his way because he can't afford to get shot the way Logan can and continue to function.

He pretty much has to shoot the center of mass on literally every obstacle as he goes on principle. His body isn't going to just spit out small arms fire like mosquito bites as he walks up a staircase the way Logan can.

As contradictory as that may seem, Castle not being brainwashed or having a 300+ year lifespan he must really, really enjoy killing people to even come close to Logan's body count. Like Carnage should have bonded to Castle ages ago because he's killed way more than Cleetus Kassidy.

Ehh. Let's be honest, most sane and right-thinking individuals don't count Star Wars characters or Marvel Comics characters as Disney princesses, even if Disney does own them now. Only a hateful marketing department and the loathesome youth of this decadent modern age try to squeeze Rey and Leia in there on the pretense that every princess should be invited to the club.

Fie I say! Only royalty anointed with the holy crest of the Walt Disney Animation Studios are allowed to count.

I'd even be willing to draw the line to exclude Pixar from that august reckoning, but then we lose Merida from Brave, and she's just too perfect for a Druid/Ranger or Arcane Archer multiclass.

The actual "official" tally is that only Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Mulan, The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, and Brave count. Which actually excludes Frozen (and thus Elsa and Anna), but pissed-off Snow Queen Ice Witch does kind of feel like a must.

It does mean you also lose actual princesses like Eilonwy and Kida because The Black Cauldron and Atlantis: The Lost Empire tanked, and no squeezing in Alice or Kairi from Kingdom Hearts to fill a quota. But if we're going to be honest, Alice probably wouldn't have gotten that spot either if Kingdom Hearts had come out 5-10 years later.

Still, that's a good dozen princesses to serve the role of evil sorceresses, insane abominations, cruel warlords, or primal forces of nature. That's a full campaign right there

Oh no PO, if we're doing this in modern canon, we're going balls deep and we're doing this against any shetagonist Disney owns, don't be scurred.

Pulling the moon out of the sky to punch Bambi in the face isn't out of the realm of possibility, and we may have to if we're going to put the Disney gals in their place, unless you want to go the Purple Man route and work with using Belle's Stockholm Syndrome to infect the rest of them.

It's going to be ugly, but I'm willing to go there if Jasmine has Genie in her stable.

Oh, and posting on the D&D Reddit, where a major thread has now evolved threshing out "Dungeons & Disney" ideas for a hypothetical campaign setting where all of the Disney Princesses are actually evil. This is what my life has become now.

... actually...damn, the Disney princesses have all of the bases covered....that would be a brutal campaign.

Fire. Lots of fire is your only option, and you still have to contend with Elsa, Rey, and Ariel once you've run out of fire. How the fuck are you going to deal with Rey in DND terms?

And shit...you still have Wanda Maximoff waiting in the wings, and Shuri if we're being technical... JFC, what have you done?

Literally nothing xmassy is new or exciting once you've hit 13 or so.

Once isn't real, you know that all you're doing is spending money you shouldn't to impress people you shouldn't care about.

A $10 hooker isn't worth the far more expensive steel radial belted condom you'd have to commission Goodyear to make just to Bump uglies...
