well that's good to know you liked all of those three then really, even with the qualms that drag My Lullaby down lol. I mean listening to My Lullaby just now, that one thing is actually dragging it down more than normal for me too; but yeah it's my favorite song from whats...honestly my favorite musical movie technically probably lol (mostly because i love its music so much). Lion King 2 is just one of my favorite soundtracks of all time and My Lullaby's my favorite song from it...but i think because it has that mental status in my mind it's like really easy for me to filter out all the goofy interruptions because I'm so used to hearing them. but behind all that is a wonderfully dark, imposing and interesting composition, with instrumentation i love, really everything i like most in music all on display in one song

and i'm glad you get Exile in your head all the time haha; it's actually not in-game, just a bonus track on the game soundtrack album which is kind of a shame, it'd be perfect credits music or something. admittedly its references to saavedro's villainy are pretty sparse; and honestly it's probably told from the perspective of his wife talking about him (it's ambiguous imo, could be interpreted either way tbh which might be intentional) and his wife is not villainous at all lol. really was just desperate to think of something for one of my favorite villain characters from a game i love, and the one realistic option happened to be something quite catchy~!

Other Friends is pretty powerful to me for kinda specific reasons. like...10 minutes before the steven universe movie aired, I'd actually gone on like a long rant to my brother about how it's one of the shows I like most that had like no examples of a character i could think of as like "this is my favorite character, the one that is 'me', the one that i'd cosplay as or make my avatar or whatever" like the characters are well-developed and interesting but they never fall into the archtypes I wind up excited about, never ones with quite the right vibe for me to get obsessed with. The kinds of characters I feel that way about tend to be erratic chaotic evil (especially vengeful, impulsive, unpredictable, but also implike and playful characters like spinel). There was no character even close to that except maaaybe amethyst; and even other unrelated traits I look for in chraracters were hard to find, then this movie came out and spinel's instantly a top 10 character for me ever for exactly all of these reasons haha. I was disappointed in the song being electroswing at first, because I haven't typically liked any electroswing I'd heard, but the more times I listened and listened...the more I realized it was the one electroswing song I've heard that i not only like, but LOVE. and it's perfect that it's the key song for a character I love so much! it's actually a lot deeper than just that why i love spinel- so many unrelated factors converging in her being like a perfect character to me, simultaneous contradictory personality traits cool visual design/etc...it's near impossible to make a character I like as much as her lol

myst 3 & steven universe spoilers: also i just realized spinel/saavedro have a LOT of parallels as characters, both with motivation being "went insane from being isolated/abandoned for 9000000 years" and as a result being quite similarly strange and sadistic behaviorally. Vengeful of course, but also clearly warped, twisted, psychologically distorted and irrational, unpredictable, traits I love. Actually this applies to Zira too obviously and that is definitely a factor in why I like My Lullaby/her/lion king 2 a lot. Just really love characters like that (even glados is comparable to that in a bunch of ways arguably haha. I guess i just really like that particular brand of evil)

thats a really negative writeup for something this high lol. personally i kinda like comedic interruptions in musicals and stuff but even with that said i'd probably like this particular one more without them. but I'm glad 2 of my picks did extremely well even if the first two went out early. and I'm glad you liked Exiled and Other Friends musically especially at least!

honestly I expected My Lullaby/Other Friends to be the top two, they're the most tradiationally "villain songs" songs i picked, which is more what you were looking for, but I didn't expect them to be way above my other picks by that far a margin haha

I'd say spinel/glados/saavedro are all 3 of my favorite characters of all time, so I'm glad they got to be represented here in a list about villains like this. and My Lullaby's probably just my #1 favorite disney song or even just favorite 'musical film' song of all time. so thanks for listening : )

people talking like that is fine and has been around forever so i don't really see the big deal; even before vgmc10 when there was an explicit difference between noms/supports, i had a very clear mental difference between the noms that i introduced to the pool and the noms that i supported of others.

I think it's ideal that in statistics, both ways of counting are addressed. but like also you really have things like "fl81 was going to nom The Wyrm's Jewelbox anyways and kao just did it first so he's not counted / mycro was going to nom Thermosphere anyways and deo just did it first", and i think anyone who's observing knows that because of things like that, these stats are just approximations.

Stats are interesting, and a variety of ways to look at them helps address all the ways they can be interesting! How haste just did it is one way, but there's other ways! and someone could post them if they wanted to! I've seen people complain about not showing up on player0's compatibility graphs, but i offered a solution that'd change how it's viewed to make it so that by design it'd connect literally everyone no matter what, without being visually cluttering (if you want that explained again i can do so but i'm getting off topic)

Maybe the reason i feel how i do is because i spent like all of vgmc3-12 just taking the hits in regards to almost never getting anything i introduced to even round 2...and now have the absurd luck of seeing 6/7 of my "initial noms" up for retiree status (I'm so happy about gosu!!!!!). So to me, thinking about it this way was never really a shock that made me feel "eliminated" after all the stuff i shared got shot out, because it was almost always that bad. My expectation was always that I'd be statistically unlucky to a point that was mathematically absurd against odds, the default assumption is nothing i share gets past round 1 and i still have fun with the contest. of course instead 13-14 gave me the special treat of seeing stuff i've shared or supported get really far, and I'm cherishing that; but also have the perspective of that past expectation to not consider this position a default.

KCF has the infamous "curse" of the things he presents to the community never retiring even if often getting to round 4. and he's still with us, still sharing music that many of us enjoy; whether or not this year continues his curse, he's made an impact that has been valuable, no matter how you look at statistics. No matter what we define as the "retired" status. and the fact that KCF is the person who is the only reason I've ever heard the track "Nilin the Memory Hunter" is significant. I would probably have never heard it if he hadn't repeatedly injected his personal interest into the noms phase, and that track is a significant part of my life. I hear glitched up orchestral music in random songs now and think "whoa it's doing the Nilin thing!", like that's a big deal. KCF put a dent in how I mentally articulate the music I hear! So I do not want to devalue that concept, the idea that specific people are responsible for why I've been introduced to some of the most important music to me that I've heard (I really valued kao's "first encountered: _" tidbits he was sharing through all of round 3 for this reason as well. put a neat focus on how we come to be introduced to the music we hear, and how often it is these contests or specific individuals who shared the music that are responsible for it)

I do think that paying attention to who supports is important too though! kaonashi1 mentioned recently how he noticed Like a Night of Falling Stars from Mushihimesama in vgmc12 because of me showing support for it; I was not the original nominator (i forget who was), and the collaborative effort of everyone involved was why it got to shine just enough in noms phase to get into the contest, and be remembered by those who have interest in it (even if it lost in r1 lol who cares that's not the point)

idk what i'm rambling about i just think "individual people introducing a track to the community" is an important thing to acknowledge, just as is acknowledging all the other ways we interact with each other and influence each others life in whatever small ways. and I don't really agree that it's "unhealthy" to focus on, i mean anything can be unhealthy to fixate on, but that's on the individuals who intake the information, rather than the methods of doing statistics itself. and I think differentiating original/support status is important when it comes to stats/discussion for that reason (even if i'm like the most anti-vgmc10-2phasesystem person here lol) sorry for long aimless post

match 1 might be the match in round 4 i feel the strongest about; funnily enough because
1) it doesn't include one of my many noms to have actually made it this far this time
2) it's a basiscape-off, both tracks by basiscape (and Noriyuki Kamikura specifically at that; though partizans is referencing some Sakimoto stuff), and i always talk about how consistently i love basiscape.
But despite that, i really am just uncharacteristically not fond of flotage, especially compared to everything else to have made it this far in the contest; and partizans MAKES ME SO HAPPY : ) I love partizans!!!!!!!!!!

match 2 is easy but if sky tower retires at least i can be happy that pokemon gets its first retiree and that it is a pokemon song that i like and have liked for a long time! but like I have listened to Endeavour maybe more times during this time interval this contest has been going on than any other song in the contest, it's pretty clearly one of my favorites now.

I think one of the coolest experiences to me was playing The Witness (which mostly doesn't have any music) while listening to music by "Ario" (aka "diplocephalus" and a bunch of other aliases) as sort of a fake soundtrack to the game. It fit the mood really well, created a cool atmosphere and if i had the time/ability i'd try to make a mod to get specific songs to play at specific areas or moments in the game. Ario's music feels like "the soundtrack to The Witness" to me even though it never was.

"both close matches"- happy round 3 is always like that : ) )) ) match 1 is like "old favorite but not as much to my current tastes vs. 'good song shut up it could be in ar tonelico or anime' and i like that more now" vs. " mwhich is match 2: match 2 is like shut up. MAtch to SUT UP i hate how much i like music becuse I LIKE MATH 2. today is one of the most overwhelmingly good days for me in the contest. best day of round 3; ALL 4 of these are 9/10s for me; all in my top ~25 out of the entire field of 192. Both in the first match got in from my noms/supports, and although I didn't touch either in the 2nd match, they're among my favorites to get in from other people.

I have a lot to say here and i put quite a lot of thought into my decisions here; but i don't have enough time to describe what it all boiled down to- too busy today/tomorrow, but i just want it to be known that I absolutely love both tracks in both matches (more than even every other day of round 3 where I say something similar) and that these were two of the hardest decisions in the contest. I could see myself flipping on one or the other by the end of the day, but for now here's how I'm voting

another "i like every song day" but g-o-s-u is another like level of intensity of perfection to my tastes that has been achieved by very few other songs. I may even say g-o-s-u is the most emotionally moved i get by any piece of music in existence; there's other music I "like more" for other reasons (including the 5 songs i ranked above this in vgmc), but nothing actually "feels as cool to listen to" in terms of emotion/atmosphere exuded as g-o-s-u to me, so that is a pretty big deal (note: this title is contested...by mostly other pso2 vol7-8 music also by hidekuni horita specifically lol). Just nothing touches horita's style of constantly outdoing himself with run-on melodic lines, emotionally intense startling unpredictable chord changes that make me float in the air at every twist and turn, excessively dense parallel harmonized 4ths/5ths stuff that sounds like VIDEO GAme music inside the forest computer, I WANT TO HAVE SEX WITH THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's just an unrelenting rollercoaster of things that go not quite where i expect or hope at every other second, instead they always go somewhere even better

the past few weeks I've been going through all 34+ hours of pso2's music finally, slowly; at this point i've listened to all of vol 1 & 4-8, most of 2-3, and most of what's out there of the new stuff that isn't with an ost release yet. I can safely say pso2 is without a doubt my favorite soundtrack now, sorry sonic shuffle you had a good run of half a decade of being my #1. Hidekuni Horita specifically is also in my top 3 vgm composers of all time for sure now (too bad he has so little confirmed music outside of pso2) and fukuyama and kobayashi are certainly even higher for me than before too. Great set of music that's more than large enough a catalogue to keep me busy and entertained for a long time to come.

I gave Apostle's Maraud 4th out of 192. It is my favorite song in the contest I didn't give a 10/10 to; in a rating system that's fairly arbitrary...basically all that means is Apostle's Maraud is my favorite song in the contest that isn't already a long-time favorite. It's a more recent discovery that hasn't had the chance to sink in as a non-temporary obsession with certainty to me. I think I would vote for Apostles Maraud over Thermosphere & Tong Nou Theme if their matches actually happened, despite ranking it below them. Still does not beat Dungeon~Geofront 4 though!!!! No song in the world does! (yet) I'm really happy that I chose to nominate/introduce Apostle's Maraud to the community and see it be so well-received! Year of Yoshimi Kudo (!???!)...between this and the 13 sentinels reps hahaha

I don't hate the opponents here but these two songs made me so happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Today's pairings are interesting patterns for me. Match 1 is between multiple very melodic Epic Dramatic songs, which is a thing I can like, but Apostles Maraud does it in like basically my favorite way any song in the world has ever done that in for me. Match 2 is between 2 less "memorable" and less melodic, well-produced EDM-adjacent things, with lots of minimalist desynchronization/polymeter/etc elements (or at least that's the element i'm personally geared to focus on); but Imbrium is like a top tier example of how to do that to me in comparison (and also just has a much darker atmosphere that's more my vibe)

interesting I have the most polarized stats by type so far. though it does not surprise me. I LOVE dark type both in concept and in terms of designs like to an insanely consistent degree. If a trainer in the pokemon universe i'd totally be some edgy exclusively dark-type user or something lol

Maybe predictably as "someone who likes dark type a lot", fairy type consistently pisses me off lol. Both being the aesthetic opposites and fairy being what's destroyed dark type's strength the most, was weird when gen 6 happened and so many of my least favorite pokemon retroactively became fairy type hahaha.

Pretty concretely knew those would by my favorite and least favorite types but i wasn't sure how everything between would pan out. Interesting fighting is so high...it definitely didn't used to be but i've grown more fond of it with time, same with dragon so high tbh, both those are recent developments. Ice and Grass low is surprising because I think of myself as liking both a good deal, and my favorite pokemon is literally Ice Type!!! (sneasel...so half dark type too..), but I guess there's plenty of examples in the low-ranking types i'm not fond of too that are what's bringing them down.

The outliers in the positive zone are definitely pokemon i like and negative zone definitely pokemon i dislike, but it's interesting to see which ones wind up being the least common in that position; not what i would have guessed necessarily though the only ones I'd say are actually "surprising" to show up as an outlier to me are Shelgon and Drizzile, did not know that those were disliked by most : (

The avg by gen is not really what i'd have expected at all, though maybe the way it "feels" is more based on how many in my top X show up in each (for example, gen 6 i think of as my least favorite because every other gen is represented multiple times in my top 20-30 or so, but it isn't. but that stat doesn't get expressed since I gave all of my top ~100 a score of 10). Still, 2 and 3 both at the top absolutely makes sense, but my mental expectation is more like 2>3>7>4>8>5>1>6, that's probably more "feeling" than any mathematical accuracy. How excited I was about Type:Null/Silvally/Lycanroc/etc, but in reality most pokemon in gen 7 don't make me nearly as happy. and 1 probably 'feels' lower just out of frustration with genwunners/gen1-pandering when i'm a bigger fan of a lot of new stuff.

Will be interesting to play around with other ways of calculating this stuff on my own time sometime, now that I have rated/ranked every pokemon, to see if that changes the order of any of these stats!

my ratings imply i like this gen's pokemon even more than i thought! sometimes I dismiss it because there's trends in newer pokemon design i dislike that are really pronounced here, and plenty of my least favorites show up here, but i think just as many major favorites show up here for me too!

out of the 56 entrants. needless to say match 1 is stupid close, but I am still confident in my pick here. Match 2 may not be as close but like even if the ToC final winds up as legacy vs autumn and legacy wins, i will still be able to say that I am extremely pleased with the ToC bracket results!

Gen 7 time! I feel like I defend this gen a lot more than most people do; really enjoyed the games/story/music/atmosphere/everything, even if there's a lot going on gameplay-wise i might typically criticize. It contains a lot of my very top favorites (Lycanroc is my #3 pokemon overall, Type:Null my #4) and in general i'm a big fan of a lot of pokes here; the idea of the ultra beasts is more my thing than for most probably. but i'm also ignoring how many pokemon i dislike are here; expecting this to result in a lower average in the end, that ranks this gen below some of the others i might mentally place below this one.

In Tsunami's defense, I think he meant "far above" in a personal preference sort of way. Like there are two high tier songs that he wants to give the most points to because they're so much better than the other songs, but there are also some other songs he'd like to give 1 point to because--while not on the level of the two best songs--they're still a lot better than the worst songs and deserve some recognition.
