Miranda Lambert - Priscilla

Miranda Lambert is easily my favorite woman in country right now. I was already a big fan before Wildcard, but that album just absolutely blew my socks off and is one of my favorites of the decade. Priscilla isn't from that album, however, it's still a fantastic, up-beat somewhat deep cut from her 2014 effort Platinum. With its more 60s-style rock and roll beat and catchy rapid-fire lyrics, Miranda details the life and times of Priscilla Presley, Elvis's infamous spouse, and more accurately their rocky and strained relationship. With this framework, Miranda also examines her own life at the time married to Blake Shelton and how similar their two relationships ultimately were. You can just tell in the delivery Miranda feels and means every word she's saying with some passionate vitriol, but at the same time she also takes some pride in being "queen to the king" and there's a real attempt to genuinely try and make things work even in the face of perseverance. Like a lot of what I love about Miranda's work, it's fun and sardonic as hell while being nothing but truthful in its message, and that right there is a way to make a solid song that lasts in my book.

Okay then Re2Remake is in my opinion very different. It has the same basic setup & structure but yeah everything else is vastly different. Progression is different, there's defense items, reworked enemies, areas totally redesigned. You would easily have two different experiences.

Don't worry about the confusion I just hope I'm hitting the right points here.

Yeah the difference is night and day and is definitely more like the Tomb Raider comparison. Totally new cutscenes, layout, puzzles, everything, worse B scenario but that's neither here nor there. So yeah the distinction is important.

I think Rock n Roll could go just as well go to Chuck Berry or Little Richard too. Rock is Beatles imo. Hell they could probably fit in pop too. Zep may even be a contender.

Was feeling a bit dark and gloomy today, and I thought of this track, from the overall phenomenal OST of the conclusion to the PS1 RE trilogy. Let's face it; abandoned hospitals are one of those creepy places we're all each a little apprehensive of. Hell, even populated a hospital can be a harrowing experience for many, despite being a place of healing. RE3's The Hospital manages to capture both of these moods, an eerie piece of pure atmosphere that snapshots a hospital's cold, clinical nature through intense, haunting & echoing strings representing the barren hallways punctuated by thumping string crashes and the pitter-patter of water-like droplets in a stylistic fusion of natural sound and traditional instrumentation. It makes you feel like despite everything, you're not alone here and makes you feel the presence of the Nemesis even when you think he's not pursuing you. It's a simple but effective track and just the kind of thing I love to better immerse myself in an over-cast day.

Riz Ahmed was great here, deserves a ton of praise for sure. However, the film was rather lackluster overall. The most powerful content came from the beginning, seeing Ruben's raw reactions to the initial hearing loss was extremely emotional. It reminded me of when I first experienced tinnitus and I searched desperately for a sound I couldn't place, and it kept me up all night in tears. Olivia Cooke has one hell of an effective sad, worried face too. Unfortunately, when they split and it was just Ruben on the ranch in the deaf community, the film prefers to settle for these rote, surface-level montages that zoom past what should be Ruben's most challenging and aversive phase. No one on the ranch has strong characterization and we don't even see their reactions to Ruben leaving or getting the implants. It feels strangely lazy when put up against the nuanced first act. It was really distracting how Ruben's surgery was given no attention either, with doctor's almost seeming dismissive of Ruben's complaints when in reality I'm sure their would be a lot more care and testing that would go in to it. Going to back to things I liked, I always enjoyed hearing ambiance from the perspective of Ruben, sound design is strong here. Ruben learning to embrace the silence was also good from a character perspective if predictable. While it had its moments and especially a strong beginning, I don't think this is a film that will be sticking with me too much unfortunately.

Also, no effect on my rating here, but I was hoping this was going to have some killer metal soundtrack or something! Just a minor nitpick from me, probably wouldn't have even fit in the film well.

Kids See Ghosts ft. Louis Prima - 4th Dimension

A short but sweet fire-cracker of a hip-hop track, Kanye and Kid Cudi trade off verses, one chock full of not-so-subtle innuendo and the other a wordy meditation on personal inner demons. This is all over an eerie psychedelic beat worthy of Halloween and a genius Louis Prima sample (well, feature!) that invokes Christmas in what may be one of the most creepy ways possible, as "What Will Santa Claus Say" becomes this slowed-down and reversed skin-crawl of an interlude, like a warning before the shitstorm. It's a clever experimental track and it's easy to get lost in its surprising amount of nuance.

Verse 2 is excellent. "I'm an optimist and a pessimist in one" is a killer line. "I still get those headaches I did when I was young", that's a very relatable line for me too.

Idina Menzel & Kristin Chenoweth - What is This Feeling? (from Wicked)

It's hard to pick a favorite from the overall incredible Wicked musical, but if I had to, What Is this Feeling? would be a strong contender. With awesome cast chemistry, impassioned performances from our two leads, and genius song-writing, What Is This Feeling? offers up a pure slice of musical bliss, initially framing the song as letters to Glinda's and Elphaba's parents before opening up to be this intense chess match of push-and-pull vocals until a whole choir joins in on the fray. I love how you can read both of our lead's personalities in such simple but shining examples, like how each starts off their letters (e.g. one lovingly/one business-like) or Glinda' wordiness compared to Elphie's staunch one-word snarkiness (e.g. BLONDE). Another interesting layer is how this is written as a love song, where the two parties appear to hate each but deep down secretly wish to get there, adding some lesbian-friendly context to the conversation. It's fun, it's extra in the best way, and it begs repeat listens to understand every nuance it tries to go for.

I would say most of his reviews do focus on the game. I think DOOM and Pac-Man are outliers since everyone has talked them to death and so a fresh, new perspective was needed on them, and there's still some solid analysis of the games themselves there too, don't get me wrong.

Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer

Though Lover may have been a hit or miss album for me, there was at least one song that was a crystal clear revelation for me: Cruel Summer. It had practically encapsulated everything that had made me a T-Swift fan up until that point, and felt like a culmination of everything she had tried to do with her song-writing. The dreamy wistful nostalgia of Taylor's best 1989 deep cuts, an industrial-synth production that references Reputation, the incising love affairs of Taylor's country roots, and just that slight dash of rock edge that helped mold and inform both Speak Now and Red. Taylor, a typical queen of bridges in general, does her best work ever here, ranting out ultra-emotional lines like the dramatic climax of a Shakespearean play, each ramping up in intensity until "he looks up grinning like a devil" comes out of her mouth like she's about to guest vocal for the next Slipknot song. Yes, it's a song influenced by all her work but it's also a unique voice in a unique moment all to its own, an undeniable triumph of catchy song-writing, in which Taylor does what she does best, lead you on an emotional roller-coaster where you're far from the same person you were when you started the track.
