Surprised I had the least deviation for Dirt!

I realized after I posted that making The Wall take 2 weeks would mean Hamilton no longer lines up with July 4th week. Hamilton is more the one I'm worried about since that's over 2 hours long. Having never heard it before, it's a bit much to ask someone to do a minimum of 3 listens in a week. Asking just for a top 15 doesn't really help much (I don't think) since you still have to listen to the whole thing. Basically, I'm thinking maybe leave The Wall at a week and just give Hamilton the extra week.

This is a really solid album. On my first listen I was surprised by how many of these songs I was already familiar with from 90s/00s radio play. There's definitely a lull after Rooster but it ends strong. I was a bit surprised doing my rankings as there's not really a "bad" song on the album (removing Untitled for obvious reasons). I don't think this is as good as Nevermind but it's closer than I would have initially thought.

I'm gonna put something out there that probably won't get much traction but...any chance of taking a week off/giving 2 weeks for an album at different points? I like doing this but I feel like I could use a break every once in a while from my "homework grind". I'm going to throw out The Wall and Hamilton as two that I would like have a longer time; one because they are longer albums and two because they're around holidays in the U.S. I don't know about the rest of you, but I take some time off from work around the holidays to do family stuff and it means I have less time/inclination to do something like this.

Real talk, I feel like my brain is sometimes incapable of processing lyrics in songs. It just hears singing as a, for lack of a better phrase, "mouth instrument". That's not to say I can't hear the words (although sometimes...), more that I sometimes fail to interpret the meaning, the intention, the story.

Best example I can think is this song I really enjoy by Jamiroquai:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmUxMUPL6Us

I just dug the the melancholic vibe of the song, especially in relation to the rest of the album. Finally, one day the lyrics sunk in and I was struck by just how monumentally depressing and sad the first half of the song is. Somehow my brain had just never put 2 and 2 together.

Anywaaaaay, I wanted to...spotlight...that Jessie Ware album again that was brought up in your other topic, What's Your Pleasure. I've listened to it a few times and I've enjoyed it. You're probably right that Spotlight:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kw56LGfrf4A&list=OLAK5uy_kwnL5gCyQ6OLq9k7QgozgaLiwa6OHflaA&index=2
is the stand out song.
Some of the beats really had me wanting to play Hotline Miami: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msg38cxXqWQ&list=OLAK5uy_kwnL5gCyQ6OLq9k7QgozgaLiwa6OHflaA&index=7
And here's one from later in the album that stood out for me, Mirage (Don't Stop):

I mean, some people only want to do rankings of albums they like or know. Which is somewhat unfortunate but it is what it is.

I'm here to broaden my horizons and attempt to listen to everything. I'm more concerned about length/number of tracks being an issue for myself. So, The Wall and especially Hamilton have me a little "worried".

First listen was generally positive, though I think it's going to take a few more listens to really sink in.

I have to say though, there are a few songs that really, REALLY reminded me of another band I'm a little more familiar with, mostly because of the vocals (but not the lyrics). They didn't get big until after OK Computer hit, so they were certainly influenced by Radiohead (which cursory internet research confirmed).

I'm guessing you guys can guess the band without any more hints, but let's go and see!

I'm not trying to start a fight, but does this mean that the budget options for a day of golfing would run someone $35-45? That's very expensive for a major sport, especially before factoring in equipment purchases.

Other sports that have traditionally had their own financial barriers to entry - like tennis and swimming - have tons of free options. I've never heard of a free golf course.

Obviously, the argument isn't that golf is completely exclusive to rich people, but that its prohibitive cost make it much more likely for rich people to take it up as a hobby, and that alone makes it more difficult for the middle-class and poor to do the same (because the rich won't want them around).

You have to remember that playing a round of golf can take 4-5 hours on a busy day. I don't think $40 is an unreasonable amount of money for that.

There's also plenty of courses that are less than that, especially if you only want to play 9 holes. I grew up playing pitch and putt and par 3 courses where you only needed a few clubs and it cost $10 to play.

Anyway, I don't mean to get so fired up over this, lol! I just like golf quite a bit, have played with all manners of people, and I think it is and can be more accessible than people believe once you break out of the mindset that all is golf hoity-toity, rich country club members paying $10k/year in dues.

Golf being a rich person's game isn't "a take" - it's the truth. The financial barrier to entry is probably the highest for any sport that doesn't require a horse. Golf courses are the size of neighborhoods; they are excessive by design, and the pompous culture of avid golfers leans into that hard.

I remember my golf outings when I worked for a major financial services firm. Our managing partner would force the office to go out for an occasional golf day as a "thank you" after busy seasons. It was basically another day of work since none of the millennials wanted to be there dealing with snide remarks and side-eyes from the entitled old pricks who golfed there all the time. I'd honestly rather have just been at the office, and everyone would have preferred the day off instead.

Golf sucks and I'm glad the youth are killing it.

And no, I'm not referring to putt-putt or top golf. Those are fine.

Golf is doing better than ever because of COVID. The muni courses I visit are packed with regular everyday people just trying to have fun.

Yes, golf is more expensive to play then basketball or soccer. Obviously. Now think about hockey or football or even baseball. There's a lot more equipment you need to buy than you're thinking.

Before the pandemic, you could get a starter set of clubs, some balls, and some tees for <$200. Greens fees for the cheaper 18 holes muni courses are $35-45 and are less for juniors/seniors.

It is entirely doable for middle class people to play golf and to say otherwise is ridiculous.

Now if you want to talk about the cost to create and run a golf course, that's an entirely separate argument. I agree that golf courses are not an efficient use of land.

I don't watch streamers or get into internet personalities, so I don't see why their show is supposed to be better than all the rest.

It's a site based upon personalities (i.e. people) that many have been following for a significant portion of our life. And now that's ending in the sense that we once knew it, so it creates a vacuum because something that was always there is now gone. For me they were also my view into the gaming industry after reading print mags and then 1up went away.

In a sense, imagine if GameFAQs suddenly went away at the end of the week. That would kind of suck, right?

Remember when these used to be 2 a year, what a time

Not to mention the Disney Plus shows.

I did a first listen of Achtung Baby and it mimiced my feelings on U2; it's fine but ultimately unremarkable. It felt like the type of album I'd stick on at low volume in the background of a party just to have some noise.

I've just never been a U2 guy; I checked my mp3 folder from the late 90s thru 00s and not a single U2 song despite having crap from all sorts of shit bands I never want to hear again. Obviously U2 have got a ton of hits but they were never a band I was excited to hear come up on the radio. So this is actually the first time I listened to a full album.

After my general ambivalence, I went to go listen to their my popular songs on Spotify and it's like "yeah, there's some decent stuff here". Didn't remember they did "The Sweetest Thing"! Looking after the fact...I had to wonder if The Joshua Tree might have been a better choice? It appears to have more hit songs than Achtung Baby. But then again, what do I know as don't have the history with this band.

Nonetheless, I will give it a few more listens this week and see if my feelings evolve at all.

WOOOOOOOOOOO!

I (finally) finished Final Fantasy 6!

Having now seen the ending, I definitely never saw that back on the SNES. It was...fine I guess.

Kefka's Tower had some tough moments as I didn't do the best job balancing my team and one was definitely underpowered. I had spent a few hours earlier today grinding my "mains" so they at least had Curaga, Arise, Reraise, and 1-2 with Ultima. That ended up being pretty damn important as there's no way I would have beaten Kefka without those spells.

I ended up having to unequip and re-equip each time I switched teams so that I could cut down on grinding for gil and items. One key thing was to keep a team on a save point so that I could avoid redoing large sections if (when...) I died. Plus, it would let you use a Tent even for the team not physically on the save point.

I came thiiiis close to losing to Kefka but had just enough luck to get everyone back on their feet again to deliver the final few hits. Being able to have Gogo mimic an Ultima, or Sabin Blitz, or Curaga was clutch.

Overall, FF6 is still a fun game but it certainly feels it's 25+ years of age. The music is still top notch though!

As an aside, cocktails are basically an invention of Prohibition, or at least became much more prevalent then. The liquor itself became way worse due to trying to distill it faster and having worse setups in the first place, ergo cocktails to drink the new inferior liquor.

Have any interesting source for this?

FF6 Progress:
I've got all the party members and a good chunk of the Espers.

Problem is that all my characters are between 30-40 and, outside of my core team of 3-4, not enough know mid-tier spells, much less the good, high level ones. I'll likely need to do a bit of grinding to get some spells on people and have enough decent equipment to outfit them for the last dungeon.

I should have time tomorrow to at least give it a go but it'll be close if I can beat the clock.

The FF7 one is like the Harry Potter one. I've never read the HP books and that was all over the place.

I can slightly understand the Samus argument but as others have said, it wasn't as consequential (i.e. not at all) to the game.

It's the FF7 one...I'm surprised there's even a discussion.

Story time...
So, back in high school, I didn't like The Beatles. I had a co-worker who would play 1 (their #1 hits compliation) and I couldn't stand it.

Fast forward to college, and in the waning days of file sharing, I found someone with all The Beatles albums. On a whim, I decided to download it because, what the hell, it was a lot of music!** And so I started listening; might have even started with Abbey Road for all I remember.

I'm sure you can guess where this is going, considering this album was my nomination...

I very quickly realized how wrong I was. And the more I dug in and listened, the better it got. Every album, without fail, had at least a few songs that I liked. And then I did some research and found out that literally their entire discography came out in a less than 10 year span! THE. FUCK?!? They went from Please Please Me to Let It Be in a decade?!? I probably spent a good month listening to nothing else as I tried to make up for lost time.

Even today, it's somewhat incomprehensible to think that they went from simple "boy band" to "rock legends" just in the 60s. All the hits, the drugs, the mania, the experimentation and evolution of their sound, all in just a few short years. There are bands where you're lucky to get 3 albums in that time span. The Beatles had enough hits that just their #1s literally overflow a compilation album. Truly incredible.

I nominated Abbey Road because it's got to be my favorite Beatles album. And, at this point, one of my favorite albums period. Trying to rank these songs felt terrible because I feel bad that something (but not Something...) has got to be at the bottom of the list. For me though, it's always the medley that's been the most memorable. There's just something about it's eclectic weirdness and beauty that stands out in my mind. I really, really wanted to put Sun King/Mean Mr. Mustard/Polythene Pam/She Came In Through the Bathroom Window as #1 but objectively the final piece, Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End, is the best part.

Maybe a few years ago, I finally found out that despite being released before Let It Be, that Abbey Road was actually the last thing The Beatles recorded as a group. For me, it brings an extra bit of emotional weight to Abbey Road; the medley is the end of that story, it's the best thing they ever did, and finishes it off so poetically. (Discounting Her Majesty...) The final lyric is "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make". An awe inspiringly fitting coda for The Beatles that will echo across the music landscape forever.

**I did eventually end up buying that big Beatles box set compilation (https://www.amazon.com/ Beatles-Original-Studio-Recordings-Stereo/dp/B002BSHWUU/) for my mom as a gift a few years after my file sharing "escapades". I felt better about what I had initially done because there's no way I would have gifted that otherwise.
