Longest time at a single employer without quitting, changing jobs, etc.?

Can count self-employment if it's your primary source of income.

I have hopped around jobs for my whole life. Might be changing jobs again soon.

Interested to hear the stories of any outliers!

First job I held from 2002-2011 then I moved to Texas to go back to school in 2012. Started my current job in 2014 and still have it.

About a week short of 10 years so... technically "less than 10 years" but I feel like that doesn't do my tenure justice. :-\

Worked for GNC off and on at least 3 1/2-4 years (had to take a break due to grad school, which didn't work out).
Got two other jobs (LEGO Retail and Minnesota Wild Hockey Lodge) back in early 2019.

Retail isn't glamorous, but I prefer the part time feel of having three different lower intensity jobs. I'd prefer keeping them until...god knows how long. As long as I'm doing what they want, keep me doing my thing. Change sucks.

Job or company? I've been with my current company for 16 years (since Feb 2005) but that's been split across 4 separate jobs.

Started off working part time in what was basically a sales admin role whilst I was at university so I did that for like 3 years. After I graduated they offered me a job as a Design Engineer which wasn't remotely related to my degree but they didn't want me to leave. I did that for 4 years before transferring from the UK office to the US office and becoming the Quality Assurance Manager. Then after doing that for about 4 years I became the US Operations Trainer which I've done for like 5 years now.

I've had thoughts about leaving for the last 3-5 years but never pulled the trigger. At this point my loyalty is actually to the VP of Operations rather than the company itself. If he left I'd start looking for another job tomorrow.

Picked more than 10 years, but I ought to qualify.

I've worked as a tutor on the side since 2002. It was a secondary source of income for at least half that time, while I worked at the library, then tried my hand at teaching, and then went back to the library for a bit. But at this point, I'm only tutoring. Those other jobs -- the "real" jobs, were all less than 5 years. But, although there's been short hiatuses in tutoring such as when I went back to finish college or when I couldn't handle teaching by itself, let alone with a second job, I've been tutoring throughout. Some of it self-employed, some of it for two local companies.

My job progression has basically been doubling each time

1 year (throwaway retail job at a trading card shop)
2 years (data analyst. The pay was not great but I made it more efficient with perl scripts which got me into my good job)
4 years (programmer, best job, should have stayed with this one I'd have so much money-- but I was young)
8 (bad IT job, joined because my two of my good friends were working it and doing most of the workload so it seemed like it'd be fun and it seemed like good experience. Bosses were total sleaze though so despite incoming revenue doubling+ since I started there has been no progression and our paychecks regularly bounce)

Granted it was good experience. I'm hoping it can carry me into my next job.

What age did you start teaching English in Japan? For some reason I thought there was a rather low age cap for that.

Longest job I've ever had was 4 years in the Air Force. All my other jobs were around a year. Almost done with month 5 on my current job, with no plans to quit at a year, lol

Really? I'm not sure that's true at all.

I started when I was 38.
With no University Degree. No teaching experience.
Not even a TESOL certificate. Nothing.
And I also speak zero Japanese.

I easily got a job in a public Elementary School.
As long as you're a native speaker, you're a shoe-in.
That's all they care about.

Longest company was 3.5, longest individual job was a bit over 2 years. Can't help but get antsy towards that 2 year mark...

I think my job times have been like...
  • 1.25 years
  • 1.5 years
  • 3.5 years (freelancing with most jobs on the order of 4-6 months, some overlap, last one being over 2 years)
  • 1.75 years
  • Just started my current job a week ago
Each jump got between a 50-75% raise, except the latest one which was pretty flat

How does that work though? There must be someone there who speaks English to give you instructions etc. In which case they could surely just teach them English. Otherwise it'd just be you in class speaking in a foreign language and the kids not knowing what the hell you're saying...that image makes me lol
