http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime/armed-taco-bell-employees-fatally-shoot-suspected-robber-article-1.3477111

Three Taco Bell employees opened fire on two suspected robbers, killing one.

Cleveland police said two armed men wearing bandanas over their faces walked into an Edgewater Taco Bell early Wednesday morning and ordered three workers to the ground at gunpoint, Cleveland.com reports.

The suspected robbers then walked over to the cash register.

According to authorities, three other employees in the store, each armed with a gun, opened fire.

One robber was shot six times and fell to the floor, while the second robber ran from the fast food restaurant.

The employees then called 911.

Police said they found the first robber unconscious inside the restaurant. He was taken to MetroHealth Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The second suspect has not been caught.

Officers have not released the name of the robber who was killed or the three employees who opened fire.

Cleveland.com reports that there were no customers in the restaurant at the time of the shooting.

Arthur Giles, one of the store's owners, told the outlet that the employees opened fire in self-defense.

Taco Bell said in a statement to WMAR that the employees at the location were "very shaken up" about what happened and the franchise would be offering counseling to anyone who needs it.

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/police-completely-terrified-prank-article-1.3473879

Will they float, too?

Police in Pa. are on the hunt for the clown caper responsible for tying several red balloons to sewer grates in Ephrata, according to a post on the Lititz Borough Police Department Facebook page.

The prank appears to be an homage to the movie "It."

Sgt. Stephen Detz told CBS News more than 20 balloons appeared around their small town.

"They pretty much hit the entire town and the area around the town," he said.

https://www.facebook.com/LititzBoroughPoliceDepartment/posts/2065659250126418

Authorities praised the "local prankster" for their "creativity," though they admit they were "completely terrified" during removal efforts. They have asked that the anonymous trickster not pull a stunt like that again.

In a follow-up post, a member of the Lititz Borough Police Department posed as a clown, inspecting one of the many red balloons recovered for fingerprints.

The department took aim at those who felt they hadn't done enough to investigate the incident, assuring the public that they'd turned the case over to their Criminal Investigations Division and were committed to catching the "'thing'" responsible for wreaking havoc on their town.

"CID wasted no time springing into action, here's one of them checking for fingerprints with their ever so handy can of 'duster,'" the department joked on their Facebook page.

"P.S. Don't tell them that Clowns wear gloves, we want to see how long this keeps them occupied."

https://www.facebook.com/LititzBoroughPoliceDepartment/posts/2066148400077503

The prank comes on the coattails of a release from the Pa. State Police, which warned that with the premiere of the "It" remake looming, there's sure to be an increase in creepy clown sightings.

"Creepy clown' sightings are nothing new to this country or throughout the world. In the 1980s, clown sightings were reported in several locations including Boston, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and Arlington Heights," the release read.

"Upon investigation, police noticed that most, if not all, the clown sightings were only being witnessed by children between the ages of five and seven."

The release urged locals to report anything they felt was threatening or suspicious.

https://www.theverge.com/2017/9/4/16251226/russia-ai-putin-rule-the-world

Russian president Vladimir Putin has joined the war of words concerning the international race to develop artificial intelligence. Speaking to students last Friday, Putin predicted that whichever country leads the way in AI research will come to dominate global affairs.

“Artificial intelligence is the future, not only for Russia, but for all humankind,” said Putin, reports RT. “It comes with colossal opportunities, but also threats that are difficult to predict. Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world.”

The development of artificial intelligence has increasingly become a national security concern in recent years. It is China and the US (not Russia) which are seen as the two frontrunners, with China recently announcing its ambition to become the global leader in AI research by 2030. Many analysts warn that America is in danger of falling behind, especially as the Trump administration prepares to cut funding for basic science and technology research.

Although it’s thought that artificial intelligence will help boost countries’ economies in a number of areas, from heavy industry to medical research, AI technology will also be useful in warfare. Artificial intelligence can be used to develop cyber weapons, and control autonomous tools like drone swarms — fleets of low-cost quadcopters with a shared ‘brain’ that can be used for surveillance as well as attacking opponents.

Both China and the US are currently researching this technology, and in his speech on Friday, Putin predicted that future wars would be fought by countries using drones. “When one party's drones are destroyed by drones of another, it will have no other choice but to surrender,” said the Russian president, according to the Associated Press.

Recently, Elon Musk and 116 other technology leaders sent a petition to the United Nations calling for new regulations on how such AI weapons are developed. The group stated that the introduction of autonomous technology would be tantamount to a “third revolution in warfare,” following the development of gunpowder and nuclear weapons.

An AI arms race doesn’t necessarily have to be a winner-takes-all scenario, though. Putin noted that Russia did not want to see any one country “monopolize” the field, and said instead: “If we become leaders in this area, we will share this know-how with entire world, the same way we share our nuclear technologies today.”

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/09/03/man-dead-after-running-into-flames-at-burning-man-festival.html

The man who ran into Burning Man festival’s signature burning of a towering effigy has died, a sheriff in Nevada announced Sunday.

Burning Man organizers said Aaron Joel Mitchell, 41, an attendee of the counter-culture festival, ran into the blaze at around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen said the man ran through a human chain of security officers.

Black Rock City firefighters rescued the man before he was airlifted to a burn treatment center.

The festival culminates with the burning of a towering 40-foot effigy made of wood. Attendees have tried to run into the flames as a symbol of rebirth.

“We’re aware this incident has affected not only those who responded immediately on the scene, but also those who witnessed it, and our Black Rock City community more broadly. We are working to make resources available to those affected,” Burning Man organizers said in a statement on their website.

More than 70,000 people are enjoying the art and music celebration in the Black Rock Desert, about 100 miles north of Reno.

The nine-day festival in northern Nevada was briefly hampered when a lightning-sparked wildfire temporarily shut down Burning Man’s main travel route last week.

The 138-square-mile wildfire is now 28 percent contained.

Burning Man is set to end Monday.

Even as the idea of universal basic income is being studied by and discussed among the tech elite, the idea is a non-starter in the United States, according to some.

Robert Greenstein, the founder and president of the D.C.-based think tank Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, called the notion too idealistic. "An effort to secure UBI would prove quixotic," he wrote in 2016. Greenstein says universal basic income is both too expensive and impossible to get through Washington, D.C.

Greenstein offered one innovative alternative: "To be sure, there is a possible exception: a carbon tax that returns its proceeds to the public via a universal payment." But even that, he says, is more theoretical than realistic because he suggests that money reaped from a carbon tax would be better used to study alternative energy or to support those at the very bottom of the economy.

"If a carbon tax could pass, we might need to focus the proceeds available for these payments on low- and moderate-income families — so the payments would be adequate to offset the higher energy costs these families would face as a result of the tax — rather than extending the payments all the way up the income scale in universal fashion," Greenstein says.

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/08/31/1000-per-month-cash-handout-would-grow-the-economy-by-2-point-5-trillion.html

Giving every adult in the United States a $1,000 cash handout per month would grow the economy by $2.5 trillion by 2025, according to a new study on universal basic income.

The report was released in August by the left-leaning Roosevelt Institute. Roosevelt research director Marshall Steinbaum, Michalis Nikiforos at Bard College's Levy Institute, and Gennaro Zezza at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio in Italy co-authored the study.

The study made economic forecasts for three proposals: a full universal basic income in which every adult gets $1,000 a month ($12,000 a year), a partial basic income in which every adult gets $500 a month ($6,000 a year), and a child allowance in which parents get $250 a month ($3,000 a year).

The larger the universal basic income, the greater the benefit to the economy, according to the report.

A $1,000 cash handout to all adults would grow the economy by 12.56 percent after eight years, the study finds. Current Congressional Budget Office estimates put the GDP at $19.8 trillion. The cash handout would therefore increase the GDP by $2.48 trillion. (Vox first did this extrapolation in their coverage of the report, and Steinbaum confirmed the accuracy of the extrapolation to CNBC Make It by email.)

The $250 allowance would grow the GDP by 0.79 percent and a $500-a-month payment would grow the GDP by 6.5 percent.

These estimates are based on a universal basic income paid for by increasing the federal deficit. As part of the study, the researchers also calculated the effect to the economy of paying for the cash handouts by increasing taxes. In that case, there would be no net benefit to the economy, the report finds.

"When paying for the policy by increasing taxes on households rather than paying for the policy with debt, the policy is not expansionary," the report says. "In effect, it is giving to households with one hand what it is taking away with the other. There is no net effect."

The study is based on the Levy Macro-Economic model, which presupposes that the potential of the economy is constrained because household income is low. That opinion, even the authors of the study admit, is debatable. "Other macroeconomic models would disagree," the report says.

The idea of a universal basic income has been promoted lately by technology leaders and Silicon Valley billionaires.

Some, like Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, see cash handouts as a solution to the imminent threat of automation to the labor force. Musk has said that universal basic income will be a virtual necessity because robots will put so many low-skilled workers out of a job.

Others, like Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, think handouts could give everyone the safety net necessary to think like an entrepreneur. Zuckerberg touts UBI as a way to ensure people are not afraid to take risks to pursue the projects and business ventures they are passionate about.

Y Combinator President and Silicon Valley heavyweight Sam Altman has launched an initiative to study the long-term effects on human behavior of getting a cash handout. The research is still in process.

http://variety.com/2017/tv/news/simpsons-composer-alf-clausen-fired-1202543183/

Two-time Emmy winner Alf Clausen has been fired from “The Simpsons” after 27 years of providing music for Bart, Lisa, and company.

Clausen told Variety that he received a call from “Simpsons” producer Richard Sakai that the company was seeking “a different kind of music” and that he would no longer be scoring the longtime Fox hit.

A Fox spokeswoman declined to comment.

Clausen, whose Emmy record includes two wins (1997 and ’98) and another 21 nominations for “The Simpsons” dating back to 1992, has scored more than 560 episodes of the series, starting early in the 1990-91 season. He is believed to be the most-nominated composer in Emmy history, with a total of 30 nominations overall.

He has also won five Annie Awards, all for his “Simpsons” music. His long tenure with the series has made him one of the most respected creators of animation music in TV history.

Clausen’s last complete score for the series was for the season finale of Season 28, which aired in May. The season premiere is slated for Oct. 1, but it is not yet clear who will be scoring that episode.

Speculation about Clausen’s dismissal involves cost-cutting measures, which have been ongoing at “The Simpsons” in recent years, despite its massive profits for Fox and executive producer James L. Brooks’ Gracie Films.

Clausen uses a 35-piece orchestra every week — something that “Simpsons” creator Matt Groening insisted upon from the start of the show. Including costs of musicians, recording studios, and orchestration, expenses routinely run into the millions of dollars per year. Danny Elfman’s “Simpsons” theme is expected to be retained.

https://www.dallasnews.com/news/weather/2017/08/23/parts-texas-bracing-emergency-will-tropical-storm-harvey-mean-dallas-fort-worth

Harvey continues to intensify as it steerstoward the Texas coast. Forecasters say the storm, which is expected to make landfall late Friday night, has strengthened into a Category 3 hurricane with 120 mph winds.

The hurricane with the potential for up to 3 feet of rain, 125 mph winds and 12-foot storm surges could be the fiercest such storm to hit the United States in almost a dozen years. Forecasters now say they believe Harvey may hit Texas twice, which would cause flooding even more severe than already predicted.

The National Weather Service's forecast shows that the storm will barrel into the central Texas coast where it will stall and dump torrential rain. Then it will retreat back into the Gulf of Mexico and regain its strength before slamming into Houston early Wednesday. Harvey's one-two punch could bring "catastrophic results," according to the National Weather Service.

http://www.vulture.com/2017/08/schumer-asked-netflix-to-match-offers-to-chappelle-and-rock.html

When buying comedy specials, Netflix has developed a habit of throwing ridiculously large sums of money at big-name comedians in order to draw them to the service. Some of those sums, however, are markedly smaller for different comedians. Variety reports that, while Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle were given $20 million per special as part of their deals with Netflix (Rock is making two for $40 million; Chappelle, three for $60 million), Amy Schumer had signed a deal for about $11 million with the service for The Leather Special last year. According to a source who spoke to Variety, Schumer then went back and negotiated for “significantly more compensation,” pointing out how much Netflix had offered to Rock and Chappelle. Standing up for yourself pays, and so does doing business with a streaming service.

TopicWhat do Flat-Earthers think about the solar eclipse?
Scorsese2002
08/21/17 2:57:50 PM
#1
https://www.coasttocoastam.com/article/eclipse-flummoxes-flat-earth-fans/

Today's long-awaited total solar eclipse crossing over the United States is being met with consternation from Flat Earth enthusiasts who aren't quite sure how such an event is possible.

An enlightening survey of Flat Earth community members by the Philly Voice reveals that researchers of the controversial conspiracy theory can't seem to explain how the highly-anticipated event fits into their cosmological world view.

Among the most prevalent theories offered by Flat Earthers is that there are heretofore undiscovered 'invisible celestial bodies,' described in Vedic astrology, that somehow cause the eclipse to occur.

But that is a contentious concept which is hotly debated by researchers and other, less esoteric yet still rather arcane, reasons for the eclipse have been bandied about online as well.

With no consensus among the conspiracy theorists, the eclipse has caused many researchers to simply throw up their hands in confusion over the breathtaking event.

One member of the Flat Earth community told the website, "I find this eclipse topic so complex and very speculative. I think it is best left alone for now."

Another researcher conceded that "I'm honestly not sure what I think creates the eclipse or what it means."

Showing just how difficult explaining the event in terms of the conspiracy theory is, yet another person who advocates for the concept mused that, "we have to have something rise that causes eclipses in the flat-earth model. We think it's not necessarily caused by the moon, though it could be."

Compounding the confusion is that the nature of the moon, itself, appears to be up for debate in the Flat Earth community as one person shockingly remarked, "I really, really don't know what the moon is."

Despite all of this uncertainty surrounding the eclipse, Flat Earth aficionados hope that it will somehow provide evidence which will strengthen their case and some research groups are actually launching balloons during the event to capture this potential data.

Additionally, taking advantage of the excitement surrounding the eclipse, an Oregon Flat Earth research group has purchased a billboard in the state capital of Salem, where thousands of visitors will be flocking for a view of the event.

As in the past, the billboard buyers hope that the signage imploring people to examine the beleaguered conspiracy theory will resonate with the 'eclipse tourists' who will be passing through the city during the event.

So while they may not be able to all agree on how an eclipse happens, the Flat Earth community remains committed to their cause and aim to use the event to further spread the word about the odd concept.

And, with the next total solar eclipse due to pass over the United States in just six years, perhaps researchers can spend the time until then coming up with a theory that works within their world view and thus avoid all the confusion plaguing the community today.

Figuring out what the moon is might be a good place to start.

Today during it's Gamescom 2017 presentation, Microsoft debuted a new cinematic trailer for Assassin's Creed Origins. The video showcased historical figures that will appear in the game, including Ptolemy and Cleopatra.

In a recent interview with GameSpot, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillamot mentioned having stuck a deal with Microsoft to make the Xbox One X one version of Assassin's Creed Origins the best console version available. "We did a deal with Microsoft on Assassin's Creed: Origins," said Guillemot, "which is taking really good advantage of the power of the machine."

Assassin's Creed Origins is the first game in the series since 2015's Assassin's Creed Syndicate, and will release on October 27, 2017 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
