Police in Pa. are on the hunt for the clown caper responsible for tying several red balloons to sewer grates in Ephrata, according to a post on the Lititz Borough Police Department Facebook page.

The prank appears to be an homage to the movie "It."

Sgt. Stephen Detz told CBS News more than 20 balloons appeared around their small town.

"They pretty much hit the entire town and the area around the town," he said.

Authorities praised the "local prankster" for their "creativity," though they admit they were "completely terrified" during removal efforts. They have asked that the anonymous trickster not pull a stunt like that again.

In a follow-up post, a member of the Lititz Borough Police Department posed as a clown, inspecting one of the many red balloons recovered for fingerprints.

The department took aim at those who felt they hadn't done enough to investigate the incident, assuring the public that they'd turned the case over to their Criminal Investigations Division and were committed to catching the "'thing'" responsible for wreaking havoc on their town.

"CID wasted no time springing into action, here's one of them checking for fingerprints with their ever so handy can of 'duster,'" the department joked on their Facebook page.

"P.S. Don't tell them that Clowns wear gloves, we want to see how long this keeps them occupied."

The prank comes on the coattails of a release from the Pa. State Police, which warned that with the premiere of the "It" remake looming, there's sure to be an increase in creepy clown sightings.

"Creepy clown' sightings are nothing new to this country or throughout the world. In the 1980s, clown sightings were reported in several locations including Boston, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and Arlington Heights," the release read.

"Upon investigation, police noticed that most, if not all, the clown sightings were only being witnessed by children between the ages of five and seven."

The release urged locals to report anything they felt was threatening or suspicious.

You know what happens when cops get scared? They shoot people. If a little kid came around the corner with a balloon they would shoot him in a blink.

Man it wasn't even scary in the movies. The only reason I remember it from the movie was because of how absurd it was at doing its job of conveying fear.

I live relatively close to there and it was blowing up social media. The chief of police actually said it was funny, they had a good time with it.
