BJJ or something like that is cool and all until your in a parking that has broken beer bottles in it or a similar situation where going to the ground is a bad idea. Also, if you are grappling with some douche and one of his buddies decides to jump in you are fucked because you are tied up with the other dude. So for striking arts, Muy Thai is ok. It's effective, but there are things that go with traditonal practice of it that if you aren't going to do them, makes the art less effective. Boxing is good, but it trains you for fighting where there are rules protecting you from certain things. Personally I think Okinawan Kenpo (one of the older forms of Okinawan Karate) provides the best mix. It has some grappling, mostly in the form joint locks that don't require going to the ground, a respectable amount of throws, and a heavy focus on disabling strikes and bone breaking. This is primarily because it was originally designed for hurting or killing people not tournament or sparring.
