"Current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short- and long-term public health," the petition said. "Keeping these measures in place until a vaccine is available will cause irreparable damage, with the underprivileged disproportionately harmed."

The declaration, which was named after the town in Massachusetts it was signed in, has signatures from 12,070 medical and public health scientists, 34,973 medical practitioners and 634,836 concerned citizens from around the world.

According to MediaBiasFactCheck, NewsWeek is left of center and has a "mostly factual" rating.

Kind of not surprised by this, responsible people have been locking down for like almost a year and it wears a person down.

I mean if people start gathering in the masses, the amount of people infected/dying will simply increase.

There was a point and time when the coronavirus could of been controlled had people simply stayed home during the initial start of the coronavirus, people ignored it and now we're dealing with the long term effects of the coronavirus which is still unknown to every doctor.

I wonder what damage calculus they used to determine lockdowns might be a net negative in the long run. Like obviously in their calculations they have to consider the tens of thousands of people that will die without lockdowns, but then how do you measure that against the long term effects of having lockdowns? I feel like the question of whether we should have lockdowns or not might be a harder question to answer with certainty than most people realize.

Since we're a year into it, we can pull death rates from 2019 and 2020

2018/2019- 2,800,000 deaths each
2020 - 3,100,000 deaths

For simplicity's sake, let's say Covid directly contributed to 300,000 deaths. The other 2,800,000 died earlier than expected- you can kinda see that in the data in late spring

You can probably parce the numbers down further to see if suicides and addiction related deaths are up (they are). You'll probably also see that these deaths will be abnormally high in school aged children as well.

Not speaking about deaths, mental health has taken a massive hit, especially in adolescents. Who knows how hard these effects will last on this generation.

There's tons more, but you're right, it's a lot of damage calculus. However, I guess we won't need to do any. We can do a Cali vs Florida show down in 5 years

It's good to have scientists on the anti-lockdown side because unlike most measures, lockdowns have resulted in way too much authoritarianism among governors and other politicians and hasn't done much good in the long run, especially for the economy.

Are you a scientist?

I've been saying this from the beginning, that people only say "trust the science" to the science they agree with.

Thousands of doctors were banned from social media and had their videos taken down early in the pandemic for saying exactly what these scientists are saying now. This isn't anything new.

The narrative will suddenly shift now that Biden is president:
https://twitter.com/cspan/status/1353817475981451264

Suddenly "herd immunity" is what's in fashion. After all, we have to keep feeding the economic machine. Remember though, democrats would supposedly have handled covid better instead of grinding people up in favor of "the economy" (making money for the rich).

This is actually a fair point. I guess my instinctive gut reaction is to be in favor of lockdowns which is at the root of my disagreements with these scientists, I dont have any data to backup my position though.

Not only is a vaccine available, but vaccines are available. Id also like to know what the background of the scientists and medical practitioners are.

Somehow no one has pointed out that the petition being discussed is from October 4th. This article itself is over two months old.

Average daily new cases in early October were around 43k and had been beneath 50k for almost two months. When this article was posted, that was up to over 150k. Today we're at about 175k, two weeks removed from that figure being over 250k.
