I think there's even more to it, because IMO to some it is more of a cultural thing. My family is Jewish, I had a Bar Mitzvah, we celebrate Chanukah, Passover, but we are not really religious, yet being Jewish is a major part of our identity and culture and the traditions for us are more cultural than religious
