I can't imagine what it would have felt like leading up to hitting the beach. The idea that you very likely were going to die. The fact that many people never even made it to shore and even then you were just getting started.

Depends on which beach you hit. Only a couple of the beaches were really terrible, Omaha and Juno. The other American one, Utah beach, went as smooth, though that could be because the initial assault wave missed the intended zone by a mile or more and they just kind of shrugged and went "welp I guess we are invading from here".

The two British beaches also went relatively well die to better terrain and armor support.
