I tend to see this phrase in regard to politics where the outcome of a policy is obvious except to the person enacting it. For example, celebrities that supported cancel culture only to themselves get canceled over something and are surprised that it to also applied to them.

Going back to my Nike shoes example, if you did make them illegal people would still want them. You've reduced the supply without effecting the demand. Which means more alleged child labor to make new shoes. Where as no child labor was needed for people to keep wearing the shoes they already had.

Let's say that's correct. That means he had evidence of someone else committing a crime. If you have a video of someone running a red light you don't also get a ticket for running a red light. It doesn't make sense to me that this is different where knowledge of a crime is itself a crime.

We're assuming he was looking at actual people. I think porographic cartoons are also considered possession so it's not as clear cut as that. Who is the victim in that scenario?

If I'm thinking of the same situation the caller committed a felony by filing a false report. Someone died as the result of a felony. Thus they were culpable. As for why someone died, that calls for an investigation into whether procedure was followed or should be changed.

However, we were discussing a scenario where the caller believes a crime is in progress. Is not filing a false report. Is not committing a felony. Thus would not be culpable if the police make a mistake in handling the situation.

This is literally what they exist for. To have someone with training investigate a situation so that the regular public doesn't have to get involved. The purpose of the training is so they don't make the mistakes that the regular public would. If they are making the same mistakes then they are poorly trained. Or, as I suggested in another topic, they are overworked and the job takes a toll to the point where they no longer see themselves as one who serves the public.

As such, dismissing "I presumed this black guy was robbing this house instead of living here" as just a silly, embarrassing thing to say is very much not a reasonable, correct thing to do, as that is a presumption that can have some very serious consequences if not kept in check.

I want to bring us back the larger discussion that set us on this path. Because the police are unreliable, being mistaken about another person's residence is a form of aggression and/or racism? Are there more steps to this? I don't see how you build that bridge connecting the one thing to the other.

Depends who you say it to. If you tell a 911 operator that there's a black dude going into an apartment that you don't believe is his, there is in fact that decent chance the black dude will end up dead, or at least in a situation where death is a significant possibility.

That's a lot of separate events to pin on the initial person. If someone thinks a crime is in progress they should call the police. The police should then be able to investigate the call and, if necessary, de-escalate a situation. If they can't do that then it's a failure in their training, not a failure of the part of the person who called them.

I agree this sounds horrible. The correct sequence of events in this situation is that the police should investigate the claim and charge the woman with lying to the police and filing a false report. It doesn't benefit anyone if the police can't do this.

Again with the assumptions. Let's say this person is drawing on experience with another gay friend they have, and this 2nd person acts nothing like the 1st. The actual quote specifies apartheid-style murders of black people, of which the obvious interpretation would be "murders of black people similar to those I saw during Apartheid." That's really not something you should have to consult Wikipedia to figure out.

I was marching peacefully with at the Black Lives Matter march on Saturday the 30th May, here in Los Angeles, near Fairfax in memory of George Floyd and so many other black americans that have been murdered in America. Apartheid style. At the march i was shot by a member of the LAPD with a rubber bullet in the testicles.

In this paragraph 2 sentences are about what took place at the march. And the other sentence is only 2 words which is used to describe the subject of a neighboring sentence.

Thus:
I was marching Apartheid style
At the Apartheid style march

If the second sentence is not also about the march where does does the change of subject occur?

This is the reason. My family has been in those similar circumstances that lead to the same difficulties. I've lived in neighborhoods where the police see the public as the enemy. One of my parents have been before judges that fail to rule in an impartial manner and denied them their right to a trial. Now modern culture tells us that we are privileged because our race means that we don't experience these things.

I think this an issue of the boy that cried wolf. The point of the story was not that there wasn't a wolf. The point is that the boy lost credibility and gave the wolf an advantage. People that are concerned about the effects of racism should ensure that their ability to discern it from other possible explanations is infallible and only raise the alarm when those other possibilities have been ruled out.

Maybe the police are overworked. Their career takes a toll on them to the point that they no longer see themselves as someone who serves the public but see the public as people who need to be put away. Is that a possibility that has been explored and ruled out as an explanation for misconduct?

Except that's not my position at all. The article seems to show an attitude of "this is just how things are done" that prevents anyone involved from personal accountability. Assuming that systemic racism is the cause takes the blame off of the individual cops. If planting evidence is what is expected of them then it's no longer misconduct and becomes part of the job description. That should not be allowed. Their actions should be viewed on an individual basis and not permitted to be indicative of anyone else.
