Oregon minimum UI is $151, if you worked a $12.50 per hour job full time you would get $325 a week. Assuming you both got the minimum (seems unlikely you could afford rent on that), you would get $1,208 from Oregon. Federal benefits would then give you an additional $3,200 to $6,400 depending on the period you were unemployed. So combined you couldn't pay $1,800 rent with over $4K of benefits? You realize dividends themselves cause a stock price decline...right? You also aren't "losing" the money. That's like saying you're losing money on a dividend because the share price falls after it. CableZL posted... I don't really care if it's a taxable event since it pays for itself. Ok then. CableZL posted... Again, realizing a gain by selling a stock isn't the same as a dividend payout. With a dividend payout, you get more money and you keep your shares. When you sell a stock to pay expenses, you lose money on the expense and lose your share(s). Except you would be selling something that appreciated more and has a higher upside for appreciation over a years long period vs having it cash out small chunks of it monthly with a huge cap on any upside. CableZL posted... Or I could keep investing in this and invest in other better/worse dividend stocks using the cash payouts. I'm not really sure why people are suggesting it's an either/or kind of thing. SLVO isn't the only thing I'm investing in. Investing in SLVO vs another investment is the opportunity cost.
