Its based on their prior living situation. They are wealthy and live a luxury lifestyle so he gets support based on that.

should someone be owed that kinda lifestyle, though?

if she paid $200k a year instead, for example, that's still more money than most people can dream of.

I think alimony should have some sort of upper limit. I understand its purpose, but even that cap has got to be judgment based as opposed to a hard rule. But overall I don't think someone is entitled to a particularly affluent living just because they were once married to a rich person.

Child support is different. I would argue that the child absolutely deserves to be owed the kind of financial life their parents live. So if they are living with the non-wealthy parent, child support should be fairly high for the wealthy parent.

I support this as I have for the reverse situation. While Kelly Clarkson makes a lot of money, theres no saying in what ways her spouse contributed in order to help support her and her earnings.

I feel the exact same way I do when I see a guy having to pay his ex-wife absorbent amounts of money a month.

FUCK that.

Give them a reasonable amount of money to get back on their feet and move on. Fuck your lifestyle or whatever it is you think youre entitled to. Predatory gold digger behavior.

When a bitch (male or female) is fighting for this kind of money you know thats all the relationship was ever about for them from the start.

That's fair but then consideration should then be given for the custodial duties as well. If you're expected to pay more in child support weighed against your income, that should also factor into how much parental right you have.

Plus that also assumes child support gets used to better the child's life. Remember that you're paying your ex who is then supposed to use it for it's intended purpose. Abusing child support payments isn't unheard of.

Thats so stupid. That man nor their kid need 200k a month to survive comfortably.

This is just making people pay more because they canwhich sounds like a terrible argument to me not sure how it holds up in court.

The problem I have with such a high amount of child support payments is it's ripe for abuse.

You could probably spend $20,000 per month of that and give a child a great life (I think any good family would kill for $20,000 a month that does nothing but fund raising their children) but the other 90% ends up turning into a slosh fund. It's too tempting to start spending that sort of money on personal extravagances that add nothing to being a parent.

something that I don't like about this whole "maintaining a person's lifestyle" thing is that it pretty much ensures only rich/well off people will have any kinda meaningful quality of life, and it's pretty much up in the air for everyone else

The thing is most child support guidelines do not account for upper class levels of income. At that point, it is entirely judicial discretion because of how assets/income are not as straightforward as in middle and lower class situations.

This. There's a lot of nuance to these cases that isn't covered in the news articles and which CE can't possibly wrap its head around without knowing a lot more details. And the "there needs to be a cap" people can never give a good reason beyond them just personally thinking someone doesn't deserve the money
