You'd be a fool to expect Apple to handle this with any level of competency (see: apple Maps) and when it goes horribly wrong, they'll blame the user and will not have your back (again, see: Apple Maps, iCloud).

Didn't think about that, but yes, minorities would almost certainly be investigated and convicted disproportionately. Especially when you consider statistically the avg minority doesn't have the means to pay for legal defense as well as your avg caucasians

I don't know how anyone can conclude that this wouldn't be a massive invasion of privacy. What assurances other than Apple's "word" would end users have that they wouldn't be combing through ALL your media and more on your phone?

Apparently they do for things like the News App and App Store so you can get fed relevant results in those apps, but other than that they just use everything themselves internally.

You have to remember that unlike Facebook, Apple is actually selling you or has sold you an actual product.

I'm all for busting the fuck out of child abusers, but surely there's an option that doesn't involve this level of privacy intrusion for the wider population. If it were more a "find good cause for suspicion the normal way, and only then can this be used to confirm", I'd be more okay with it.

There are two halves to this. First, the new technology will scan everything that gets uploaded to iCloud, but will only alert a human staff member for review if it passes a certain threshold of confidence that the material you are uploading is illegal (this part is very vague). Second, everything children send on iMessage will be scanned for sexually explicit content. Parents will be informed if it finds any, and this feature can be turned off by the parent.

Most cloud services reserve the right to scan for things like this, but when last I checked, they generally opted out of doing much of it. I'm not a lawyer so I can't say if that's because of legal issues, privacy issues, shitty technology, or customer trust.

The article has some conflicting information:

Users photos, converted into a string of numbers through a process known as hashing, will be compared with those on a database of known images of child sexual abuse.

and

The system has been trained on 200,000 sex abuse images collected by the US non-profit National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

So which is it? If it was only hashing the image files and comparing the hashes to a known database, that would still be an invasion of privacy but not nearly as bad. It would make the amount of false positives very low too. If it's actually using Machine Learning to scan image content that's definitely going to produce false positives that are sent to Apple to be reviewed.

The article (and the name neuralMatch) sure seems to indicate it's the latter, so idk why they included the line about hashing.

Image hashing is a bit different from normal file hashing. You will almost never get an exact match with file matching so there's a different algorithm for hashing and is used for things like reverse image search to provide things like "similar images"

Sorry if the question was answered, I didn't read the topic.

Anything you upload to iCloud will be scanned by machine learning and/or compared with a database of abuse material managed by the government. Any matches will be sent to a human that works for Apple, and then passed on along to law enforcement if they think the flag is correct.

Fuck the American government for demanding this
