Not exactly true. Things becoming mainstream a lot of the time ends up removing some stuff that made it good in the first place to accommodate the newer players. I can understand why people hate stuff becoming really popular

That's my take on it as well. If it were something more benign then Toast wouldn't have been so hesitant and secretive about their "experiments", and definitely wouldn't have shut down two topics over it.

I still have no idea what the thought process was around sending a PM to one random nobody on the message boards and having them do the reveal instead, but it does fit with Toast's MO of doing the absolute bare minimum of community interaction.

I'm also convinced that the "obvious reasons" for not cross-linking message board posts are because they don't want to have the boards at all, and replace them with more easily moderated comment sections instead.

Also really explains why both Toast and Timmy refuse to publicly answer what Fandom's plans for GameFAQs' future are if the answer is to strip any Wiki-compatible content and shut the site down. Why do you think their only priorities have been cross-linking, shutting down 261 and CE, and getting as much ad revenue as possible since the acquisition?

They're not doing anything to give this site a brighter future, but they're doing everything they can to give it no future. And we're still going to have mods defending them as the site burns.

Also, again, just as a point of comparison to the other platforms - none of the other ones were free. Youtube has been free the entire time. This is why there's not the same discourse around them.

Oh, for sure, and there are plenty of options for supporting most creators, without also feeding Google. I'll buy merch or hit a Patreon sub or something to some creators if I feel like, but I'm getting something very specific back from both of those.

Youtube is actively pushing back against adblockers, more so than usual in their past, and pushing people to get Premium. A subcription from every user would be much more beneficial to them than any of the ad revenue - plus, if there was 100% adoption, it wouldn't be long until they started adding ads back in and up-charging for a new tier of service, like what Amazon has done to Prime recently.

It's literally just how these companies work.
