Fallout has been a pretty casual mainstream series since 3. Definitely since 4. Do you mean because it also has a TV show now?

It's a natural feeling. Not an entirely rational one, but one that everyone feels from time to time.

It's like when you follow a sport and watch all the league matches, and then the superbowl or world cup rolls around and suddenly every layperson you know is an expert despite having never watched a game in the last 4 years. It's annoying.

Yes. I'm a middle school teacher. A middle age woman at my school has a son that dressed in a fallout themed outfit for prom. What the fuck? It's too popular now.

Amongst gamers only. I fine with that. The Persona series is popular now and that's cool but it's still only really popular with certain people,not everyone.

It upsets you because from now on, you're going to encounter people whose Fallout knowledge is limited to the TV series while knowing jack shit about the videogames, the latter of which are probably the only version that you consider to be canonical.
Even if it sticks to the canon for now (I have no idea if it does, because I have never played Fallout nor been interested in the TV series), these types of TV series inevitably deviate more and more from the source material.
So have fun dealing with that.

all of that happened while CE (and the rest of GFAQs) has been on a steady decline, and they look to limit board use rather than add to it.

Fallout was dead for m e ever since they turned it into some shit multiplayer game instead of giving the games actual fans what they wanted. They still refuse to. They simply wanna do just what this pic shows.

I think it depends.

like, with long running franchises, you can have multiple creative forces, and because of that, we can't tell if the more "accommodating" approach is one some of them might have wanted to take anyway.

with single creative forces, maybe it could have been an "evolution".

Meh. The FO community has always gate kept. You had people bitching fallout 2 was a disgrace and selling out at the time and thats before social media took off. It was even worse when fo3 came out.

No Mutants Allowed is despised by many FO fans for a good reason.

I admit, I do worry about the next Fallout. Fallout 4 was good, but made some mistakes. In the long run combining the perk system and skill point system into one thing was a bad idea. The great thing about perks was how they changed your gameplay even if they were useless. With everything in one system you cant have that. I assume they did this to simplify the game, and I hope they go back in a sequel.

At least, I hope my assumption is wrong. I dont think Fallout 3 was too complicated for anyone.

Because nobody likes tourists.
Especially the tourists that start pointing out why and how long time residents are wrong about an area.

fwiw, I feel like developers, if they're going to listen to fans, are a lot likelier to try to appease those on the gaming side rather than the TV side.

like, if people are already liking the show, at most, I expect to see some references but nothing major (like with Cyberpunk Edgerunners).

Terrible shame TC has to share an always high quality IP with other people who haven't put more than a single minute into multi-award winning GOTY Fallout 76.

There's probably a bigger gap between the popularity when Fallout 2 came out vs. when 4 came out than the hap between 4 coming out and now.

That's me with Zelda, due to me heavily disliking the BotW/TotK formula compared to the old one.

You could maybe argue that for From Software. There is a vocal minority that wants the games to be easier and they keep ignoring them. Whether you think that's a good thing or not is up to you, but it's possibly an example of that kind of gatekeeping.

Capcom wasn't happy with the core audience numbers of DMC so they decided to reboot the franchise to make it more appealing to a general audience. Which we know now failed and why they decided to go back to the original franchise with DMC5.

Oh. I think this was just from that black era of Capcom where they gave all there series to random Western devs to make shit games. Konami did the same thing (and still does). Capcom renaissance has been in full swing for a while now.

gatekeeping CAN be good, but in an instance like this, i don't think it's helpful and i don't really get it. I would love for more people to like a lot of the stuff I'm into - but what you don't want is people bringing in completely different things and diluting / taking over the space.

as an example, music genres. I'm all for more people getting into metal - but if you were to just let people continue to call every new rock band metal and spam up the message boards / channels w/ it would be a bad thing.

It's a single player game, so just remember nothing anyone else does impacts your experience. Only you can do that for yourself.

Actually metal is a good example of gate keeping. It used to have a Nazi problem and then people started gate keeping them out of the community and that was a good thing.

I dunno, I feel like this is different.

like, I guess I can understand how it might affect the image of metal - marketing things that might not be metal as metal, but idk if it would hurt the actual music.
