And a modern version would most likely take place at a more modern war, one where females are in the army.

well you could do that but then you are once again losing context. as i said before everything about the book is deliberate and if you make it during a different war there is a completely different tone because, say, the War on Terror is completely different than WW2 except for the fact that it has war in the name.

another element i just remembered from the novel that wouldnt translate well with the girl cast is the sexual undertones of the book, which is a key part of the book (when they're pig hunting).

with stuff like the pig hunt, you could turn it around and change all the scenes to make them female-centric but then at this point you are creating your own little thriller movie and just attaching a classic name to it in order to get butts in the seats

personally i think help desk is a good starting point, try and get in as a L1 / L2 support or as a NOC technician or something. you need to have a passion about enterprise IT and be the kind of guy that wants to mess around on VMs to learn shit or play with old servers and test things out.

i would suggest working on your people/business skills (which is why I like help desk as an entry point) because the whole anti-social computer guy in the IT closet (like in the IT Crowd show) doesn't really exist, or at least he won't really get far in his career.

certs are important but i would say that a baseline of experience will get you going better than someone with no professional experience but a bunch of tests completed. you will want to specialize at some point and that's when i think certs like CCNA will help.

this is just my brief summary from working in IT for like two years, I think someone like @CableZL can give you much better advice if he's feeling up to it

yes, word of the wise to all you people - eBayers buy EVERYTHING. they'll buy all your stupid shit. I had a coworker who used to sell his fucking undershirts on there. He told me he'd also sell his beat up Nikes on eBay and had people buy them every time, and once he asked a buyer what they do with disgusting years old Nikes, and the guy told him that he tears them apart and salvages the leather to use for repairing other pairs of Nikes.

These are the people you'd be dealing with. If you have something that you think you want to sell, chances are there is an audience for it on eBay waiting to buy it.

right now it's got 8 bids going on it and it's up to $142, and this is for an auction that still has a lot of time left. and look at the ps4, it's a shitty photo and that controller looks like someone put it through a fucking wood chipper.

yea, it looks like this is going to sell at a pretty high price. i'd say give it a shot

There is nothing about the story that needs the characters to be male. The theme of the book is how humans if taken away from society would quickly turn on each other and become savage. That can work just as well with mixed gendered kids or girls.

Though maybe it shouldn't be called lord of the flies, maybe give it a different name.

the entire framework of the book is the parallels between the men fighting in WW2 and these innocent boys on an island. there's a reason that it takes place during WW2 and not just the kids crashing onto the island while on a holiday or something.

this is especially evident in the very last scene of the book when the navy officer finds the boys and he's all cheerful and asking them if their time was like Robinson Crusoe, when they literally just found him moments after fucking killing each other.

This is not a book about men/boys/masculinity explicitly (like, say, Fight Club) but it's a large element of the novel and swapping the genders would completely change the entire tone and alter the themes in a way that wouldn't make sense. The movie would lose so much of its bite and just become a dumb island thriller.

There's a reason this book is a classic that is basically considered required reading for all schoolchildren - it's because everything in this book was chosen very deliberately.

I think the distinction you're missing here is between "is" (money is deeply important in our current society) and "should" (it should not be like this)

good point. i think i get tripped up when i hear most far left (or even far right) rhetoric because so much of it is rooted in (their versions of) utopian societies and how things "should" be, when how things really are is the more or less centerist reality we live in

I would take the "promotion" so you have a fancier title and can put that on your resume, and then begin looking for new work immediately

paladin_man posted...
I was thinking that at first. However, 'senior associate' sounds better than 'associate team leader'. Team leader sounds like small time management role at McDonald's.

the thing is that now you can put another entry on your resume / linkedin / whatever with your new position. so instead of working at this company it shows that you not only worked at this place for your role for X amount of years, but that you were promoted. You could even put one entry on your resume as "Senior Associate" and then another as "Senior Associate - Team Lead" so it looks like you worked your way up the ranks.

However I'd GTFO pretty soon after this because if there is no raise it's just more work with no reward, and obviously you don't have a future at this company if they are not looking to develop employees and reward them for it. It's indicative of how the rest of your time will be here

the way i look at it, if everyone were able to have their basic needs met (i.e. you will never have to worry about food, water, shelter, healthcare, etc again), would it matter if one person was a billionaire and you weren't? at that point itd be just jealousy (IMO) because the billionaire has a cooler car and can go on more luxurious vacations than you

operates under the assumption that the very rich are all happier and feel a greater sense of purpose than us normie wage slaves. i am sure you could find tons of very rich trust fund kids, actors, socialites, etc that have more money than they could ever need but have a very depressed existence. look at someone like Notch, the dude is a billionaire and spends all day on reddit writing about how much he hates his life.

IMO the Xbox One was kind of ahead of its time

It was only ahead of its time if we're on a timeline slated to become a dystopian future.

yea i can kind of see that, i think this is probably the worst gen for gaming ever

but lets be real here. we had people whining about used games, always being online, a focus on multimedia and not just games, etc.

now it's 2017 and when was the last time you went into a Gamestop and bought a used game (there's a reason they're closing a lot of stores)? most people seem to be downloading shit.

all the top video games are now either online-only (PUBG, MOBAs, Overwatch, Destiny, etc) or games where online play is overwhelmingly the most important part of the game (CoD, Battlefield, GTA Online, sports games, etc).

Multimedia is also huge now, much larger than in 2013 IMO. in 2013, Netflix's first big series, House of Cards, had just released its first season, and now 4 years later Netflix has greatly expanded its original content and is one of the leaders for TV shows and movies, same with Hulu, Amazon, HBO GO, etc.

my point being that for better or worse, the 2013 Xbox One seems to have pretty much predicted most of the major trends in gaming and media consumption but i think consumers were kind of deluding themselves about the direction things were going in.

- State of Decay, a zombie survival game a lot of people on here probably didn't play. You play as a survivor and once you die that survivor is gone for good and you play as another one, and when you die it affects the other players in a bunch of ways

- prince of persia - i always thought this one was funny because the game is framed like the prince telling a story, and when you die he goes "no it didn't go like that, let me start over and try again" as if he was telling a story to someone and goes "so there i was, leaping from one platform to another when i slipped and died. oops, no, i don't think i died. let me tell the story again!"

- bioshock, kind of made sense with the whole transhumanism theme going on

- dark souls 2, basically the premise is that you're an undead character destined to live forever and slowly go insane unless you go on this huge, impossible journey to kill the king. so every death makes sense thematically. same for the other DS games but I thought DS2 did the biggest job of making you being undead the main focus

Here we are with Xbox One X , what 3 years later? $500, but this time it's actually worth the money. I can't contain my excitement.

Typically I go to bed around 11 every night, so I'm well-rested and energized for work the next day.

Last night, I got into bed at 11 as usual, but when I closed my eyes, I just couldn't fall asleep. My mind was racing. The Xbox One X is not only the most powerful console ever created, but it is also the smallest console on the market.

I tossed and turned in bed. I could not get comfortable. How could I expect to just drift off to sleep knowing that this November, just 4 months from now, gamers will get to experience true raw power, right from their living rooms?

I called up my girlfriend, who goes to bed at 8pm (as women are wont to do). "Hey babe," I said. I could hear her shifting from her sleep. "I can't sleep. I keep thinking of how powerful Microsoft's latest console, the Xbox One X is. Never before has a home console been a 6 teraflop powerhouse before and contained 12GB of RAM."

"Babe," she said, "it's 11pm. I need my 16 hours of sleep so I can face a full day tomorrow of being indecisive about what I want to eat for every meal. Why are you so concerned with such raw power so late at night?"

I howled with disgust. "Woman, listen to me," I screamed into the phone. "It is not every day that such a powerful console comes out. There has never been a console with such speed, yet such elegance, and there never will be again, at least until Microsoft makes the next Xbox. If you cannot understand this situation then perhaps we should see other people."

With that, I hung up on my ex-girlfriend and chucked my iPhone across the room. It smashed against the wall and landed into a pile of my other broken iPhones. Now I am exhausted at work and the Xbox One X is still the most powerful and smallest console on the market.

the funny thing is that now when you look at how tech has changed in the last 4 years, voice assistants are one of the biggest trends in tech now and everyone has Siri/Bixby/Ok Google/etc or an Amazon Alexa hooked up to their living room - now Kinect seems even MORE natural of a fit if anything.

IMO the Xbox One was kind of ahead of its time with a lot of the features they announced at launch. However, bad PR and gamers kind of overreacting to everything led MS to have to basically cut all their planned Xbox One features and now we are at where we are now, with a machine that had a lot of potential trying to play catch up

just got back from Maui about a month ago. had an amazing time.

for suggestions on what to do:

- you absolutely need to do the Road to Hana. Highlight of my trip. Drive it, don't take a tour group because you will lose that whole adventure feel and the ability to take it at your own pace. Download a smartphone app before you go called "Road to Hana Maui GyPSy Guide" (it's on both Android and iOS, costs $5, totally worth it) and connect your phone via bluetooth so you can hear it through your car speakers. You're going to lose cell service for a lot of the Road to Hana drive but this app actually doesn't need cell service, and it's very helpful and interesting.

- Get dinner at Mama's Fish House if you like seafood - it's pretty expensive (like $60~ a plate) and you need to make reservations months in advance, but get on it ASAP because this was honestly the best seafood dinner I ever had

- Go up to the Haleakala national park. I went up there to watch the sunrise and it was incredible, but very fucking cold

- Snorkeling, there are a lot of great spots

- If you like beer, Maui Brewing Co is on Maui (obviously) and it's very good. They had like 24 beers on tap and their stuff is all over the island. I haven't been able to find Maui beer in the continental US so far so enjoy it there. There's also a winery in Maui called Maui Wines and they have an awesome pineapple wine.

lol @ people comparing bowling to playing in the NBA or MLB

bowling has no conditional changes, there's nobody blocking you, you only bowl 10 frames, you dont have to run or physically exert yourself in any way other than moving your arm.

it's literally just mastering one motion and replicating it. i used to be on a bowling team with my dad in middle school and i figured out that if i bowled in a certain position that i was guaranteed to get it to go right to the 2nd pin, which would sometimes give me a strike.

i remember one game bowling like a 200 just doing the same repetitive motion. and this is an 11 or 12 year old with no actual experience; imagine if i did this as my profession full time
