It's a good call, considering companies have literally been writing fake articles on bot sites to help skew the metadata and SEO mechanics of search engines, which is why Google and Yahoo have both turned to absolute shit when you're looking for stuff over the last few years.

The point to playing a game is having fun. Player agency can be integral to having fun, but doesn't dictate whether a player will have fun, or how much fun they can have

This is the key. And it's telling that most of their worst games are games that generations of kids have played and enjoyed for decades. ie, relatively simple games that can serve as bonding experiences or just fun time-wasters.

Some people don't enjoy games where every player at the table needs to memorize a multi-volume rulebook to know which dice they roll when and how to position and move the 4,378 figures, meeples, resource markers, tokens, and fortifications and which of the four card piles you need to draw from during which of your 7 turn phases.

It's fine if some people do. Euro-style games can be fun to play, and they can even be fun to watch if your on YouTube and want to see another group plow through it. But some people just want to play a simple relaxed game with some friends while kicking back a couple drinks, and most Euro-style games would be absolute hell for them.

I mean, honestly, I think my friends and I have had more fun playing drunken Disney Charades than anything ever published by Ravensburger, or that's won the Spiel des Jahres. And as much as I've enjoyed watching TableTop or NRB's Board Game Club, I wouldn't dream of bringing 99% of those games to the table for my friends, because they'd hate most of them.

MeatiestMeatus posted...
If you're incapable of having fun without having a larger influence over the gameplay, that's fine.

I'd argue that it might potentially be not fine, because it implies deeper issues all its own.

It's one thing to enjoy overcomplicated games. It's another to be completely incapable of enjoying anything but overcomplicated games.

When it comes to tabletop RPGs, I've spanned the gamut from Amber Diceless RPG (which almost borders on being completely freeform) all the way to TimeLords (a game which assigns multiple damage hitboxes to every creature, which contains rules that break down your real life physical condition and mental prowess to assign to stats so you can play as "yourself", and which pretty much requires you to understand rudimentary calculus to play). But if I ever met someone who could only play games like TimeLords, I'd start worrying about their mental health.

Y'all, monopoly sucks and I don't know why people think it's fun.
It takes forever, has no decisions, and just causes hurt feelings.

Misery is the entire point of Monopoly though. It's like playing Diplomacy (which is a hugely well-loved game) - you go into it knowing someone's probably going to flip the board before it's over. There WILL be screaming. And possibly death threats.

When one player is screaming "COLLUSION!" at his wife for making uneven trade deals with other players to help blunt his rise, you're playing it right.

But the trick is, when you play with friends, everyone shrugs it off afterward. If your game is causing hurt feelings that last for a long time after, you may need to reconsider your friendships.

I've had great fun playing Monopoly by leaning in to the horror. I'll RP someone who will have a vendetta against you for the rest of the game because you picked the car as your piece before I could. Or making corrupt deals with other players to form alliances. Or secretly stealing thousands of dollars out of the bank and seeing if anyone notices. Or cackling like a supervillain while building hotels on Boardwalk. Or arguing over whether or not there should be any money under Free Parking (there shouldn't be, you fucking Philistines!).

But to some extent we also have to blame the writing and directing. Actors can only give so much, and even fantastic actors will be mostly shit if they're being given shit to work with (see also the Star Wars Prequels).

For all of the flack Superman Lives got, that costume doesn't seem *that* bad.

I think it was mostly still pictures of the translucent iridescent one and his hair that bothered people the most. But to be fair to him that was just a costume fitting, and odds are he would have styled his hair differently for the film, and they'd have picked a suit that didn't look like total ass for the final product.

Though I also think most of the fear was because Burton was directing (aka the guy who made Batman goth and who proudly boasted that he'd never read a comic book), and Nicolas Cage (insane man that he is) was playing Superman. Though even that was overhyped. And honestly, Nicolas Cage is a pretty good actor when he actually tries - we just mostly remember him from when he was deliberately playing crazy (Shia LeBeef also sort of fits into this category, and arguably maybe even Prince William Freshington Smith).

Are they though? Someone trying to be an ass still has some limits. An AI can conceivably reach a point where it thinks it's doing the logical thing without emotional or immoral limitations to impede its decisions, then turn around and murder a billion people because it doesn't quite understand why that's a problem.

The real problem with AI is that ultimately it's going to be created by humans, and shaped by humans. And humans suck. So even unconsciously we're probably going to corrupt any AI we make as we give it orders and it learns from our history, culture, and archives of data.

It's why every chatbot seems to eventually start talking about how Hitler wasn't so bad.

Some people might love the idea of putting cold and impersonal machines in charge of everything because they're misanthropic enough to assume that's still better than people being in charge, but people can easily influence those machines (either deliberately or accidentally) to be even worse.

It wasn't until FF3 (FFVI) where I played for 16 hours and got stuck on the Floating Island because I was too weak to go forward and there was no way back (and everything was too strong to level off of), and had to completely start the game over that I started taking power-leveling more seriously. Nah, because I'd become way more self-destructive.

Unless we're assuming they're straight up using psychic engineering to edit out those sorts of behaviors to make us placid cattle, but at that point I'd be content with it (artificially or not), and if they're "humanely" killing me to eat it wouldn't matter all that much. But if they're capable of and willing to resort to that level of control they wouldn't need to offer the deal in the first place, they'd just do it.

Either way, if I do manage to make it to 80 they'd still be giving me decades of extra (likely more exciting) life than I likely would have had otherwise (I'm already old and broken - give me a young body again and shit's on), so it's win-win. Plus the added satisfaction of treachery.

I have a long-standing stance of being willing to sell out the human race to aliens or AI or whatever outside threat comes to kill us all. I'm fully aware of the usual trope of the quisling who sells out expecting a reward getting killed for it ( https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RewardedAsATraitorDeserves ), but I'm not doing it for a reward. I'm doing it for the sheer misanthropic joy of screwing over my species. So the sudden and inevitable betrayal at the end where I'm "rewarded" with death is just an expected price to pay.

You should all strive to be the opposite of badong. Gnodab.

A quote from Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four: "Sanity is not statistical".

"Sanity was statistical. It was merely a question of learning to think as they thought."

That said, if everyone likes something and you don't, it's very possible that that's because you're somehow approaching it wrong or could otherwise change something to have a better time.

The trick that everyone misses - mainly because people online love to shout "ALL OPINIONS ARE EQUAL AND YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO INVALIDATE THEM!" - is that there are different types of opinions.

For instance, if you are discussing whether or not a specific comic book is good, the opinions of someone who has spent the last 40 years reading thousands and thousands of comics are probably slightly more valuable than the opinions of someone who has literally never seen a comic book at all. One of those opinions is based on an in-depth understanding of the medium and comparison to tons of other examples, the other is rooted in complete ignorance and knee-jerk assumptions. From there, "misinformed" opinions (based on factually incorrect knowledge) are potentially even worse than uninformed ones.

What blurs the line is that a discussion over whether or not something is good is NOT the same as whether or not you personally enjoy it. People have a bad habit of confusing their personal experience with objective reality, which sets off a chain of reasoning where opinion leads to "fact" - "I dislike this thing, therefore this thing is bad, therefore no one should like it, therefore anyone who likes it is wrong, therefore there is something wrong with them."

The other problem is that any discussion of opinion at all starts to shade into the linguistic problems of general semantics and the "is-of-identity", where language shapes perception and actually warps our view of reality. A LOT of our issues might be negated entirely if most of us got into the habit of clarifying our thoughts better. "I don't feel like I personally enjoyed this movie" has radically different connotations than "That movie was bad", even if we tend to use both to mean the same thing.

I coded in C++ a little back in college, but I remember literally none of it.

I feel like I vaguely remember a way to color-code lines of code, but that might have just been the program we were using to code in and compile with.
