It's valid to argue over whether early Egyptians were black or some other ethnicity (because there's a fair amount of evidence both for and against, and it's not helped by most legit historians deliberately avoiding the issue out of fear of political incorrectness), but we know pretty definitively that the Ptolemaic Dynasty was fairly pure-blood Greek.

Almost certainly not. From what we know of the Ptolemies they were hugely against mixing their blood with the "commoners". It's one of the reasons why they were basically known for a lot of brother-sister marriages.

The assumption has always been that most members of the Ptolemaic line were about as Greek as it gets. Which is why the occasionally had difficulty relating to their subjects.

I wasn't bullied in 1st grade. I was quite popular.

I did get bullied for a couple years in middle school, but I got over it relatively quickly because I grew up to be a 6'3" psychopath and the bullies backed off. And then I bullied other people in high school.

My school system never really had a ton of the "traditional" cliques you see on TV. No one gave a shit about sports so we didn't really have popular jocks or cheerleaders, and most of our smart kids had social skills so they didn't really act like nerds. We had a few metal head kids but no one cared, we had a few skateborders but they weren't seen as being super-cool or anything. All of which meant most people were relatively chill and it was fairly easy to make friends and be popular unless you had crippling anxiety issues or weird hygiene issues or you were one of the 2-3 nerds who didn't quite seem to know how to act human.

Between TTRPGs and CCGs and running track and having a pretty good sense of humor I always had a pretty easy time making friends and being fairly high in the popularity pecking order. I was never going to win Homecoming King or anything, but I also wasn't going to get soda dumped on my head like the one weird little toad boy who was in our class for a few years.

If, say, I have a particular aversion to people using "literally" to mean "figuratively" to the point where I would prefer to ignore any users that make a habit of that

Ironically, if you DID have that aversion, then you wouldn't be replying to my post right now, because I do that all the time!

Mainly because I believe in the concept of linguistic drift and evolution of language by usage, which means that if enough people "misuse" a word for long enough, the connotation changes and the usage becomes valid (and new dictionaries will start including the new connotation as an official definition).

The boat on "literally" has long since sailed (Ambrose Bierce was pointing out people used it that way 150 years ago, and modern dictionaries actually include the alternate definition of "literally" used for emphasis), and at this point the people complaining about it are actually the ones in the wrong.

adjl posted...
Where the whole point of ignoring users is to make the board more enjoyable, exempting some users from being ignored stands to undermine that.

Yeah, but then you're pushing up on the fact that you don't actually have any sort of inalienable and innate human right to digitally ignore anyone you want, and online services aren't obligated to provide you with the ability to ignore other users at all.

So if a site decides to allow you to ignore users, that's as valid as as letting you ignore everyone or no one. It's just how that site chooses to administrate.

If a site decides to give you the ability to ignore (or block, or whatever), but still mandates that admin and moderation-level staff cannot be ignored for official reasons, they're fully entitled to do that. Even if they have the technological capacity to create multi-layered announcements or ways of administering things, they are in no way obligated to do so.

And to be brutally honest, if you're so bothered by people saying or doing things that are literally too minor to be modded or to get mods in trouble, you might be too thin-skinned to be on the Internet anyway.

adjl posted...
Even then, it's easy enough to work around that.

Let's be honest, though. This site is coded by monkeys. Even when they introduce the simplest of features they wind up breaking three other things, and almost everything they do is wrong.

If they tried to do something that allowed mods to bypass ignore only under special circumstances, they'd probably break both the ignore feature and the moderation queue entirely.

Disney is just weird with what they go after. They fought for decades to extend copyright laws and then just let og Mickey lapse and it's now public domain.

It wasn't really their choice. Basically what happened was that they pushed copyright so far that even lawmakers were starting to get sick of it, and basically told Disney they weren't going to extend it again.

So Disney was basically left in a scenario where they couldn't keep their stuff under protection forever, which meant they needed to figure out new ways to screw people over. The live-action movies are part of that. A willingness to use trademark law (which works differently) as a weapon is also part of the plan.

It's an extremely complicated mess. But make no mistake, Disney didn't "just give up". The company that literally sued pre-K daycare centers for drawing Disney characters on the wall didn't suddenly decide they were cool with other people using their stuff.

I don't see why ignore shouldn't be possible, though, provided it doesn't interfere with your ability to see any dispute responses they send you.

The assumption is probably that mods can issue verbal warnings or announce things in a topic and therefore you need to be able to see what they're saying in case it's important. But in practice they don't really do that.

Arguably it shouldn't matter - if mods are posting things that are so terrible or annoying that they need to be ignored for it, you should be marking all those posts or complaining about them on Hellhole in an attempt to get them de-modded. If enough people complain (or mark) they'll probably become more of a headache than they're worth.

This may be the nerdiest thing I've ever heard anyone say on this site, which is an incredible achievement.

The average person doesn't sync their time devices down to the nanosecond with an atomic clock. They just go by whatever the phone or watch sets itself to, or what the voice on the radio or TV says, or by whatever else looks right. Because the average person doesn't need pinpoint precision, they just need to be "close enough". Odds are by their watch it was already 11 - and even if it wasn't, being less than a minute off would fall under "Ehh, it's close enough" to the vast majority of humans who don't have crippling OCD.

It's in no way rude or unjustified for a customer to knock if their watch says it's time for a store to be open and they can literally see someone inside. Especially if they're polite about it. Even more so if they can see into your store and literally see you have a clock that says it's already 11.

Now if they were like "Hey asshole, open up! You're wasting my time you lazy fuck!", then yeah, sure, they're the asshole. Otherwise they were 100% in the right.

You'd also better be the owner of your business, because this is the kind of behavior that gets people going to your manager to complain about how much of a cocknozzle you were to try and get you fired.

Stories like this are why I've always hated "Not Always Right" as a site. People there will always post stories about how bad their customers were, but they'll never acknowledge that employees can be just as bad when it comes to being impolite, ignorant, entitled assholes. And a lot of times, asshole customers are being assholes because they're dealing with asshole employees. Not that the employees would ever admit that - it's always someone else's fault.

I worked in retail when I was younger, so I've definitely seen both sides of the coin. People can be assholes regardless of which side of the counter they're on.

Not me. I don't really have any friends who are into board games. Or at least not the overcomplicated Eurostyle board games that have gotten popular lately because nerds love complicated games with tons and tons of stuff in the box that take 4+ hours to play.

Most of us are adults, and between work and kids and other social obligations we have a really hard time getting together as a large group more than a few times a year, and when we do nobody really wants to play board games (if we play anything it's usually Magic: The Gathering, but we've fallen off on that as well).

I bought Betrayal at House on the Hill like 10 years ago and I've never played it once. Probably never will at this point. Doesn't really make sense to keep buying games I know I'll never play.

captpackrat posted...
I'd like to get the Skyrim board game, but holy crap is it expensive. $112 for the base game, plus $78 for Dawnguard, plus $57 for From the Ashes, plus $110 for the Miniatures Upgrade Set, plus $40 for the 5-8 player expansion. $400 plus tax for a board game!

To be fair, you're not supposed to buy it all at once. You're supposed buy the base game and play it over a period of time, and then when you've played it enough that it starts to get boring, you buy the first expansion. Then you play that for a while before buying the second one. So it's $400 stretched out over a much longer period.

Of course, the downside there is that if you wait too long you might miss out on some of the expansions if they go out of print (which is what kind of happened with HeroQuest back in the 80s).

On the flip-side, there's also the possibility that you'll buy the base game and decide you don't actually like it as much as you thought you would, so you don't bother buying the expansions. Or you have trouble getting a group of friends together who want to play it and wind up just stuffing it on a shelf and letting it collect dust.

Presumably the fact that the other major cleaning solution smell is "pine" is related, because pine needles are acidic. So someone somewhere probably figured out if you mix pine needles in water it makes a stronger cleaning fluid as well.

Because in Western culture, the word "birthday" more accurately means the anniversary of your birth, not the literal day you are born on. It's why there's a difference between "birthday" and "birth day".

Otherwise, we'd all have one birth day for our entire lives and that would be it.

And you can't have a "zeroth anniversary", so the first one doesn't count in the reckoning.

When he was in well-written movies.

But that was long, long ago.

Came in to post that I only want a Legend of Zelda movie if Link sounds like he did in that show.

In fact, I want it to sound exactly like this:

Michael Clark Duncan was my first thought but I didn't think he'd have the right name recognition.

There's also the small problem of him being dead.

It's a furry webcomic. Apparently someone tried to make a cartoon pilot for it to get it made into an animated series?

HOW SOON WE FORGET ALEXANDRIA

which i just discovered probably actually didn't get burned down all at once

Well, I did say stuff like the House of Wisdom, so I was including the possibility of other occurrences.

But the problem with Alexandria is that, even if it did happen (as you note there are questions about exactly what happened when), it was usually as a consequence of getting accidentally set on fire during unrelated invasions, not deliberate destruction of texts. That really only (supposedly) happened once (via the Muslims)... though most sources today suggest that was mostly made up BS at the time and never actually happened.

It's similar to how the Library of Constantinople was supposedly destroyed during the Fourth Crusade (though again, accidentally, by rampaging invaders who didn't care about knowledge and who were mostly just burning random stuff and looting). But then it turns out there was no evidence that the library even existed by that point, and there was no evidence that anything actually happened to it if it did, and the story was mostly sensationalist propaganda (who says it's only modern news that makes shit up for clickbait?).

Whereas the House of Wisdom was a pretty clearly documented case of the Mongols destroying a major library and throwing all the books into the river, because the Mongols gave precisely zero fucks (which is probably why they were also the ones who invented biological terrorism - by catapulting plague-riddled bodies over city walls to kill off people who annoyed them).

Keep in mind I last saw the movie in the late 90s, with my old man when he was still alive, so my memory of the scene I'd seen twice or thrice up to that point is limited.

Fair point, I forgive you.

Why would you have Hitler autograph a book you were about to burn?

Technically speaking, if you watch the scene, you're conflating two different things (which is understandable, because of how it was shot).

First, the people burning the books. Symbolic to show how the Nazis hate dissenting thought, and giving Elsa a chance to look upset, showing how she values knowledge over ideology (making her more sympathetic in spite of her treachery). Hence why she acts offended when Indy steals the diary back from her and says he doesn't want to see it get burned.

Second, Indy gets stuck in the crowd of autograph seekers, all of whom have autograph books or note pads. None of which would be on the list of books to be burned, so all of those people would be keeping the autographs.

You have to remember that book burning is almost never indiscriminate (unless you're talking about stuff like the House of Wisdom/Siege of Baghdad incident). People are burning books that have been specifically proscribed by the ruling group for ideological reasons. It's not like people were going to grab every single book within a hundred mile radius and burn it, they were only burning books from the pile (which were specifically books that had been outlawed).

I don't remember the part about Hitler signing a book in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade probably because it's been years since I've seen the movie.

From what I recall, the books he signed got a pass. The point of that scene was to show how, in a tense moment, the journey got to continue because Hitler signed the book, preserving it, despite not truly understanding what the book contained.

It's just a one-off joke. Indy steals the diary back. He gets trapped in the crowd of autograph-seekers, who push him towards Hitler. Suddenly, he's face to face with him.

In that moment you see the panic on his face. He knows he's caught. Hitler's going to recognize him as the guy who has screwed the Nazis over multiple times. Or he's going to recognize the diary. Or maybe he'll just recognize that the guy in the Nazi uniform with the high-ranking medals doesn't look like any of his actual officers. Indy's fucked and he knows it.

And then Hitler just signs the diary without even reading it (he probably couldn't even if he wanted to - supposedly Hitler couldn't speak/read English).

So Indy goes from this moment of pretty much shitting his pants to suddenly being almost elated because he realizes he's going to get away with it.

I think trying to read any more into it than that is completely missing the point. It was just meant to be a dramatic moment that gets subverted into almost comedy. Hitler essentially loses because he's a dipshit. You're not supposed to assume that Hitler somehow "preserved" the book from being burned because it was never going to be burned in the first place.
